Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Somphet Market is small and not far from Thapae Gate, so if your visit to Chiang Mai is short, you might choose this one to see a local market.

A reasonable selection of fruit and veg is on display, but really this market is best known today as one that many cooking schools take their pupils to, making it a little less natural a lot of the time.

Worth visiting if you have little time, but the markets in Warowat area are a better bet if you have time - and Warowot should not be missed anyway.

Small market. Only a fruit store and a couple of food stores opened around 7 am. Later in the day, you will be able to get fruits, vegetables, clothing, cooked food stores. Definitely prefer to go to Warorot market instead if you have time.

Similar to the Ploen Ruedee night market, this is another market that has a strong touristic feel to it. First of all, a lot of information is provided in English, so that already takes away from its authenticity. Second of all, this is where lots of cooking classes bring the aspiring cooks for market shopping, thus making it very crowded in the morning time and early afternoon time.
Nevertheless it is not a bad place at all to try out some (semi-?)local flavors and shop local ingredients!
Pro tip: if you want to experience the truly local way of doing things, then there are some morning markets that open at 3AM. Don’t know the names unfortunately, but ask around accordingly.

This market is located near the Thapae Gate. It is connected to another market called Ming Muang. You can find fresh and packaged food, vegetables, live animals and cooked street food here. We went there early in the morning and saw a lot of activity.

WE walk by nearly everyday and love the sights and smells. There is so much to buy....fresh fruits, packaged curries, trinkets...just so much. Enjoyable all the time.

Small and more a local market selling fruit and vegetables mainly that didn't look too appealing. Your likely to pass it walking around. Don't make a special trip.

This small market is only a short walk from Tapae Gate. Enter Moonmuang Road Lane 6 and you will see the actual market area on your left, under a big roof. It is mostly a fresh market that has other shops as well. You can buy clothes or dried fish and fruits.

I recommend the Thai style ice coffee from “Tarn Coffee Shop” near the entrance. It was one of the best I had in Thailand.

If you continue walking into Lane (Soi) 6, you’ll discover it is a small guesthouse and backpacker community. It appeared to be rather quiet. I saw all sorts of guesthouses from budget places for 200 Baht a night to newer places that are most likely a bit more pricy.

I think it’s the right spot to search for a place to stay if you arrive in Chiang Mai with no advanced booking.

If you move a bit around Somphet Market and its side alleys you will see that everything else you need is right there: A money changer, a pharmacy, food & fruit stalls and the party places are not exactly next door, but not more than 10 minutes away by easy walking.

If you walk to/from Tapae Gate, you pass Wat Dokkham. It is on the same side of the road. Nice little temple, nothing special, but once you are there anyway, it is well worth a short visit.

The market is on the left hand side, a short walk north from Tha Pae Gate. It was quite deep and quite large. I went there thinking it was a local market, but I was surprised to see so many white people there, which may have been a coincidence. Maybe that's why they were able to communicate in English.
