We landed at Phuket airport at 11:30 am. We went to have lunch for dim sum at Jea Dim Sum - Bak Kut Teh near the Phuket airport. We went to Mai Khao Beach - Airport viewpoint near Mai Khao temple. We parked our rental car at the free parking near Mai Khao temple on the road Soi 7. The water was clean. We paid 20 Baht per person for a local taxi/motorcycle to Mai Khao beach. The afternoon viewpoint is good for planes taking off. The morning viewpoint is good for planes landing. The planes were taking off every 5 to 10 minutes. We paid 20 Baht to get back to parking lot.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 March 2024
- Gerd MShanghai, China350 contributionsBest place for walking a lonely beach into the sunsetIf you go on sunset you may meet some 10-20 people every 500 meters. During the day you feel as if this 10km sand beach belongs to you - no people around except two lonely fishermen. The water is a little turbulent, so you should be a good swimmer if you want to go out further (some people did in the evening). If you like beach walking (with or without sunset) this is a perfect place.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 March 2024
- cheryl e38 contributionsBeautiful beachMia Khoa faces the Andeman Sea on the western side of Thailand. We stayed at the JW Marriot and it was outstanding. Situated on the beach at Mai Khoa in a lovely quiet area. Bike rides was a pleasure around this area. Around 20 minutes from the airport it was an excellent end to our holiday. Great restaurants was easy walking distance from hotel as was the beach massages situated outside of hotel.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 June 2024
- Amanda G3 contributionsAccess through JW MarriottI’ve only been in Phuket for a couple of days , and I’ve quickly learned that beaches can look really different depending on what part you are staying at. I’m staying in a hostel near Nai Yang where the beaches are covered in litter, sadly. After doing research, I saw a lot of people staying at the Marriott were really happy with their beach, so, I decided to see if I could access it even without staying at the hotel. I could! It’s beautiful there and quite clean. I was not questioned when I walked through the hotel to get to the beach.Visited July 2024Travelled soloWritten 15 July 2024
- Stefanie Sadler10 contributionsShocked at litter on beachWe went to the beach daily to watch the planes land and take off as our grandson desire is to become a pilot 👨✈️ Fab location 5 minutes from our hotel. Beautiful sunsets to die for but was shocked how much litter and plastic bottles are left over the beach. No one, even locals appear to pick it up. Sand it lovely and you can take a beach towel and watch the sunsets but beware of the super fast translucent crabs 🦀😂😂😂 Gave us a few shocks. We went in August no rain but the red flag was up most days and a life guard in situ. Sea was too rough to swim. We had a hotel infinity pool right on the beach so was more than happy to swim here till the sun went down.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 3 September 2024

This beach is beautiful and has a gorgeous sunset, but I don’t recommend it for swimming. The waves are very rough, and right now they have jellyfish in the water. It’s not a very good beach to walk on, as the sand is course but soft so your feet sink easily. It is close to Turtle Village and many of the resorts are on this beach.

Pros: One of the less crowded beaches especially away from the runway. Everyone is huddle up to take pics of the airplanes. Sand in water is nice and soft if u walk out to where the water hits ur waist. Good food by vendors I recommend the mango smoothies and chicken.
Cons: No beach umbrellas and not much shaded spots during high noon.
I'd recommend to anyone who wants a beach day and likes to airplane watch

went here for plane spotting.
I didn’t realize planes don’t land there all the time - it is seasonal so this time of year they only take off from the beach which is cool but the planes don’t get as close.
quite a lot of people waiting to get a good photo with the plane over the top.
got a bolt there but you can’t get dropped right at the plane watching area as the roads are restricted due to it being behind at the airport - so you have to walk quite a bit and getting a bolt back is difficult as all the cars are on the other side of the airport so it’s a 15min drive to fetch you from the north side so i def recommend getting dropped off/parking and getting picked up at the south side of the airport along the beach at sirinat national park playground area -
recommend for plane enthusiasts!!

Mai Khao Beach, located in the northwest of Phuket, is renowned for its serene and unspoiled beauty. As part of the Sirinat National Park, it is supposed to be a protected nature reserve, offering a tranquil escape with its long stretch of soft, golden sand and clear blue waters. The beach is also famous for being a nesting ground for sea turtles, adding to its ecological significance.
I have visited Mai Khao Beach for the last 20 years and it is unfortunate that I have to state my recent visit left me feeling quite disappointed. Despite its status as a nature reserve, I was disheartened to see a significant amount of plastic waste scattered along the shoreline. This not only detracts from the natural beauty of the beach but also poses a serious threat to the local wildlife, especially the sea turtles that nest here.
Disappointing was the apparent lack of sustained effort from the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) in Thailand and nearby 5-star resorts to address this issue. Given the 5 star resorts resources and influence, I imagine they could organize regular clean-up efforts and promote environmental awareness among their guests.
In conclusion, while Mai Khao Beach has the potential to be a stunning natural haven, the current state of plastic pollution is a glaring issue that needs urgent attention. I hope that the resorts and local authorities will step up their efforts to preserve this beautiful beach for future generations.

Super experience 💞💞 fantastic. To do if you're nearby.... I highly recommend covering your head and putting on sun cream because the sun is strong. It's not difficult to find the place also because it's marked. However, there are plenty of refreshment points to drink and eat.🫶

We wanted to see the planes coming into land from the beach and you get a great view from the beach. We cycled there and we were able to get right onto the beach. If you drive there you will have to park and either walk or hire a taxi to get you near the beach. I doubt it will cost a lot as it’s a 5 mins taxi ride.

This is one of our favourite locations in the world. Mai Khao is a beautiful 7-mile beach that is usually deserted. The sea can be a little rough for swimming and the sand can be hard to walk on, but this dramatic beachfront with forest backdrop is our idea of heaven.

Hiya, I’m looking to book a holiday to the JW Marriott Phuket Resort and Spa for the beginning of December. I’ve read a few reviews and it has said the Mai Khao beach can be a bit rough and not swimable. As I am going with my two year old I just wanted to know how the beach is in December ?

What's the best way to get there from patong? Especially to plane spotting point. Thanks.

By taxi as they are very clued up.
We hired scooters that were very reasonably priced per day. I think about 180 bahrt.

if you mean shops, no
a few restos and convenience shops
more bigger shops, supermarket, a street or 2 back from the beach

Здравствуйте, скажите пожалуйста, есть ли там какая-то инфраструктура. В отис поехать в отель, поскольку тут номинации порядок выше других пляжей, но пугает пустота.... есть ли там променад или кафешки, помимо отелей?
Written 10 January 2019

Hi there, Are you able to swim at Mai Khao beach in January, especially children? I've read about a large ledge, drop off. Do you think this is an issue if so? We are coming from Sydney. Many thanks.
Written 7 October 2018
Beaches are good at that time of year. From May through to September they can be quite rough and not swimmable. We have pulled up and swum at many beaches all the way along that side of coastline and have not had an issue and except for the one time in September when surf was just too rough. We usually only swim quite close to the shore and have not been exposed to rips or anything but with kids safest option is to swim where they have lifeguards
