Although this monastery is a bit touristy but we had opportunity to speak with buddhist students. It was a fantastic experience to learn about how they think about meditation, about the way of life based on the karma and how they spend their days in the monastery. They invited us to have lunch with them so we could taste their homemade food and tea. They are so friendly and open-minded. And the buildings surrounded by beautiful trees and flowers are amazing.

So beautiful so serene. Has to be one of the most beautiful monasteries I have ever visited. Beautiful landscaping. Beautiful gardens. This temple is a stone’s throw away from the cable car station. Insta worthy place.

We visited the monastery after taking the cable car from town. There are beautiful gardens and shrines and statuary to see. If you want to enter the temples you must have your shoulders and knees covered, so dress appropriately or bring a wrap (men too).

It's cost 70,000 dong for a return trip on the cable cart. It wasn't overly busy when I went in the morning, however I was surrounded by a few self entitled vietnamese families trying to push in line. That put the entire experience off for me. Not to mention the same vietnamese families walking in front of people trying to take photos of the pagodas. No patience.

I am surprised that this is only rated #4 on things to do. As far as I am concerned if you only had one thing to do this is the best one. Access is easy. You hail any taxi and say "Cable Car". They all know where to take you. It costs 40,000 dong taxi. Then you go up stairs to the cable car. This is 70,000 return. The cable car ride is pleasant and you get a treetops high view of the mountains around Dalat. An option to the return trip is to go one way and taxi back the long way...but this is quite a few kilometres extra. After going to the Buddhist Temples which are modern and clean you walk down to the lake on the other side. This lake is much more scenic and peaceful than the lake in town. If you have a few extra hours here you can get the boat from the lake for a 3 or 4 km trip. It is quite beautiful and interesting views from the boat. As I said you have the option of return by taxi from the lake or by the cable car.

The cable car ride was great. Peaceful, relaxing, with views of the green houses as far as the eye can see, village life below, mountains all around and Paradise Lake in the distance. The temple is stunning. Make sure to wear proper clothes (men & women must cover knees and shoulders) the temple is decorate with impressive landscaping, flower gardens, great architecture and beautiful views. We also walked down the the lake, which was worth the view. The last cable car back to Robin Hill leaves at 4:30 so make sure to plan accordingly. Have fun!

Imagine a beautiful garden filled with the sound of tinkling wind chimes and the wind blowing through the trees. The mild scent of insense wafts around you and a quiet comes over you like nowhere else. This is what it is like at Thien Vien Truc Lam.
Please make sure that you wear clothes that cover both your knees and shoulder (men and women). Maybe you could pack a picnic or just take photos and enjoy the stunning flowers, gardens, buildings and scenery. Entry to the gardens and pagoda is free.
There are also cable cars that take you across the top of the forests which cost 70000 dong return or 50000 one way.
A tip for you is, visit Datanla falls first and the walk/drive to Thien Vien Truc Lam afterwards. It makes a great day trip. You can reach Datanla from Dalat city on green bus #1 (for 10000 dong) which departs from Khu Hoa Binh street just up from the market. It's a bus terminal so there will be a few buses there. Tell the driver/conductor you want to go to Thac Datanla (or write it down to show them). They will tell you where to get off, it's about 1.5km once you leave Dalat city.
Go through the falls and then walk out and up the main road until you come to a left turn road. The road has billboards for a few resorts on it, and there is construction going on right now. It's about 1.5km walk and there's a bit of a steep hill to climb, so if you're not into walking, maybe take a taxi or motorbike. Then you will arrive at Thien Vien Truc Lam.
After you have enjoyed the pagoda and gardens, catch the cable car 1 way back to the road where you can catch the bus back to Dalat city. Once you get off the cable car, cross the main road and wait for a bus. We didn't see any sign for a bus stop but the bus stopped when we signalled it. It costs 7000 dong to get back to Dalat city.

This was a great experience! The view is fantastic, the trip is smooth, and the temple and lake on the other side is breathtaking! By a round trip, it cost 70000 VND. It is a 2k walk from the city center. Ps, the gondolas don't go between 11:30 and 13:30.

If you are on a budget and looking for walking instead of motorbiking, you can easily walk to the cable car. From dalat center it takes about one hour, if you walk relaxed, shorter if you walk faster. The walk is along a big road but their are sidewalks all the time and you walk along nice buildings. Walking is also a nice way to see some of the life in Dalat. The cable car ride is fantastic, the air clean and fresh- the monastry an oasis of silence and beautiful flowers. Come early in the morning and note that the cable car closes between 11.30 and 13.30 . The restaurant at the cable car station downstairs is very good with a buffet that lets you cook your own food right on your table. For 45,000dong a great deal.

Saw someone's comments that cable car has stopped and noone is there. Should note that the cable car is closed for 2 hours lunch, which makes it special and quiet because the tourists from the tour buses will not get to the monastery till after 2.30pm.
We went by taxi around 10am (after the morning tour buses are gone) and had a great time enjoying the views and taking photos in a blissful and quiet environment. Enjoyed the cool climate while listening to the soothing bells of the wind chimes and abundance of fauna in its premises full of flowers and pines.
However, when the crowd starts appearing from 3pm, the serenity and peace were taken away. So we left via a 10 minutes of cablecar ride where the views were great. An ideal place to have a picnic and a book to read. Visit after and before the tour buses, you will not regret.

Are meditation courses held at the monastery and if so is it possible to stay there as a guest?
Written 19 September 2018
I'm pretty sure there is a meditation centre there, but not sure if it is for their private use or if they run courses.

It's at the very top of Dong Da Street. Also, the cable cars stop between 11.30-1.30 each day for their lunch break. So be prepared to spend a couple of hours there, which is easy to do anyway.

Has anyone tried staying at the monastery for a retreat? I just recently completed a 10 day silent retreat in Thailand at one of the monasteries in the south. I was hoping to do something similar in Vietnam. Please and thank you

I've never done it personally but met several guys who has been through the experience, however, as far as I can remember there is a time-frame commitment at this monastery.
I remember someone saying that you need to commit for at least four weeks and other than that you should be ok to retreat yourself up.... ;-)

Is Thien Vien Truc Lam a full day activity or can it be done in less time?
Written 19 September 2016
Is there a cafe or restaurant at the bottom of cable car, or at the top near the pagoda? Also, how long does the cable car ride itself take?
Written 22 August 2016
It takes about 7-10 minutes one way and the same back :)
It is important to mention that we have been there in May, so it wasn't the high season and we didn't have to wait in the queue.
You can buy some souvenirs and snacks from the street (corns, meet, bread) close the the pagoda but it was the ugliest food I have seen, so I am not sure about the quality. Just bring something with you :)
