Hang Quat street is a about two blocks north-east of the Hoen Kiem Lake and another great street area in the old quarter for exploring. There are many interesting shops, more local consumable and household items in this area. We really enjoyed the little shops selling the big buddha statues and miniature alter pieces.

Here you can also find plenty of souvenir shops, clothing shops and other businesses and local eateries and coffee shops nearby. There are some proper sit down restaurants and bars nearer to the lake as well, just 5 minutes walk away.

We highly recommend spending an afternoon and/or evening walking around these great old streets of old Hanoi. Hang Quat is just one of many in this area so just choose a direction and go for a stroll. Its very good fun in old Hanoi.

A good find was a little shop on Hang Quat St. I sat on a tiny plastic stool and chatted with father & son as they hand carved wooden stamps. I wanted to buy handfuls of them but I hardly ever make cards now. I settled in the end for an intricately carved miniature diorama. It shows the modern cyclos and those walking down the street with the conical hats, beam of wood over their shoulders, and panniers hanging below.

Hang Quat, the street that formerly sold silk and feather fans, now stuns the visitor by its brilliantly colored funeral and festival flags and religious objects and clothing Quat means fans, and that is of course what was traditionally made on this street, from bamboo, paper or palm leaves. Villagers set up shop in the street and the fans they made were named after their villages and sold to Hanoians and visitors. During the French occupation, the street was named Rue des Eventails (street of fans) — it was only named Hang Quat street in 1945, after the August Revolution. Fans are no longer made here, having been replaced by items for worshipping. Running west from Luong Van Can Street (toy street), Hang Quat is only about 200 metres long but is packed with shops selling an array of brightly coloured items — including Buddhist statues, flags and lamps. It’s also the place to go for hand-crafted wooden seals in all shapes and sizes. You can buy self-designed wooden seals which can leave personal imprints on books as a unique souvenir from this street.

Went to this street with the intention of buying a decorative fan - did not find any for sale in any of the shops. Woodwork stores were popular however.

This is one of the old streets in the Old quarter. This street sells mainly fans and wood carved stamps. Interesting to see.

This is one of many streets in the Old quarter. I found a number of shops selling handicrafts and customised wood stamps. Its a small street and you can cover this on your tour of the old quarter.
