Firstly, nowhere in the world are mosques of a national character - Arabic, Turkish, Syrian, Yemeni, etc. The Armenians call this mosque Persian in order to erase the historical heritage of the Azerbaijanis, who were the indigenous population of the Iravan Khanate and constituted the absolute majority of the population of Yerevan at the beginning of the 10th century. The Blue Mosque (due to the color of the dome) was built in 1766 by the Iravan Khan Huseynali Khan from the Qajar (Azerbaijani) dynasty who ruled modern Iran at that time. Persians have never lived on the territory of Yerevan. There are detailed reports about this in the archives of Russia. The Blue Mosque is the only surviving mosque out of 9 that were built during the 500-year history of the Iravan Khanate in Iravan. Even though the mosque is located in the city center, it seems to be carefully hidden from view, especially since there are very few Muslims in the city. The Blue Mosque is waiting for the return of its real owners in order to rise again.

What a lovely find this was in the city! It’s advertised as being closed between 1pm and 3pm, but even in this window you can enter the courtyard which is impressive enough. It’s located in a busy part of the city, but once through the gate it’s an oasis of calm and quiet, with lots of seating to relax and admire. The decorative buildings on all sides of the courtyard are beautiful and reading up on the history makes it all the more interesting. I’d really recommend taking the time out to visit, even if you don’t get to go inside the mosque itself.

Kaboud Grand Mosque is a mosque for Shiites that was built in the 18th century. This place did not serve as a mosque during the Soviet era and became the history museum of Yerevan. But after the independence of Armenia, the mosque was rebuilt for the Iranian citizens with the support of the Iranian government and is now the only active mosque in Armenia.

This is my first visit to a mosque. It was interesting and I enjoyed the beauty of the architecture. Yerevan is a great city to walk around and I combined a visit to this mosque with Pak Shuka located across the street. You tour the mosque yourself and there is a display near the entrance explaining the various room you see around the central courtyard.

The mosque was built in the middle of the 18th century. (1766) by order of the ruler of the Erivan Khanate, Huseynali Khan Qajar. The dome and part of the façade of the temple are covered with blue tiles. The Blue Mosque symbolizes Armenian-Iranian friendship. It is gratifying that in our difficult times, different religions and peoples coexist peacefully with each other, mutually enriching themselves culturally. There is a beautiful courtyard and wonderful souvenirs.

We recently visited the Blue Mosque in Yerevan, Armenia. Armenia is a beautiful country, famous for its numerous churches. Almost all buildings in Armenia are constructed with a special type of stone called tuff. After exploring these magnificent churches, encountering the beautiful Blue Mosque added a rich and diverse layer to our Yerevan experience.
The mosque is conveniently located near the city center, making it easily accessible. It is an active place of worship built with reddish brick, distinguished by its striking turquoise-colored dome and expansive courtyard, all designed in exquisite Persian architecture. The community there is incredibly welcoming, and they are more than happy to answer any questions you might have.
Additionally, the mosque features a small exhibition of artifacts, offering visitors a glimpse into its historical and cultural significance. This blend of architectural beauty and cultural heritage makes the Blue Mosque a must-visit in Yerevan. Highly recommended!

It is the only Muslim place of worship in the city. It used to be a historical museum. Not far from the centre, it is easy to find. A beautiful Persian-style building with a colourful mosaic dome. We arrived at prayer time, so we just walked around the garden and looked through the window to see the inside. It's a peaceful, quiet place in a vibrant city.

The Blue Mosque is an 18th-century Shia mosque. During the Soviet era, the mosque (like many of the churches in the city) stopped its services and housed the History Museum of Yerevan. Following Armenia's independence, the mosque was leased to the Iranian government at a nominal sum by the Armenian government. The mosque was renovated with the support of the Iranian government and again started acting as a mosque, mostly for Iranians residing in the country. It is currently the only active mosque in Armenia.

The structure is small, pretty rather than grand and welcoming albeit with strictly enforced conservative dress code for both men and women visitors with non moslems restricted to visiting the small courtyard area only. For non moslems, the courtyard with its few trees offers temporary refuge during hot summer days.

The Blue Mosque is a beautiful mosque part of a cultural centre restored by Iran (itself part of a nice agreement between the 2 countries, as it is Erevan's only mosque). Definitely worth a visit during your Erevan visit as the quaint rectangular rose garden with its small fountain is an absolute haven of tranquility away from the bustling Mesrop Mashtots Avenue.
Come before it gets dark for nice pictures of the dome & minaret !
