- Dirk WAlexandra Headland, AustraliaQuiet uniqueAfter visiting the petroglyphs in Gobustan National Park, you can contract a local 4WD, whose driver takes you in a mad 20-minute-dash to the mud volcanoes. It looks like you've arrived on the surface of Mars, with black mud bubbling constantly up to the surface. The gas that escapes with it is flammable ! There's nothing else to see and the driver gets impatient to take you back after a short 10 minutes, but it is a unique experience and I highly recommend you spend the money !Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 26 October 2023
- ChrisThomasTravelsManama, BahrainMud volcanos are a Must!Mud volcanos are a must, while in Azerbaijan. Take the trip out to Qobustan, find a vehicle to take you out to see the mud. My favorite was the Lada. Fishtailing through the muddy "dunes" of this bleak wasteland, traditional technopop blasting from Soviet era speakers, while our driver alternated hands on the wheel between snapping in time to the music and gesturing rudely to the other cars trying to pass, turned out to be the highlight of our trip. Highly recommended, do not miss if you find yourself in Azerbaijan!Visited December 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 November 2023
- RiathefudieDubai, United Arab EmiratesMud volcanoes are an amazement in itselfTake a few hours out from your time to see and experience the mud volcanoes that is due to the radioactive elements and sulfur dioxide working under compactional stress. Try the mud bath as well since it has a lot of health benefits. My travelogues on Instagram have quite many details about what to see and do in Azerbaijan. Check out riathefudie. - New Road to The Mud VolcanoesThere is a lovely new road that takes you all the way to what will be the visitors centre (still being built in Dec 2023). Behind the visitors centre there are some mud volcanoes with boardwalks. If you want to see some taller ones, that just ooze mud follow the road up the hill, until it turns into a track and continue for about another 10 minutes on foot, or drive your rental car if you are brave and it hasn't been raining!Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 18 January 2024
- kimwillruleSingapore, SingaporeDon’t dip your hand inMud Volcanoes, Gobuston State Historical and Cultural Reserve, Gobustan, Azerbaijan: About 300 of the 700 of the earth’s mud volcanoes are in Gobustan and the Caspian Sea. These bubbling marvels are such a sight to behold. Before you smear it all over your face for the ultimate facial, there’s methane in there that’s potentially cancerous. We had a nutter in our group who dipped his hand in one of the bubbling mud volcanoes and left promptly after lunch. #eatstylishtravelstylishVisited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 13 June 2024
- BalkrishnaShroffMumbai, IndiaWorth Seeing !!During our tour outside Baku, we were brought here by our tour guide which is about 60 km from town.. The bus stopped some distance before volcano. Then we were shifted to small old Russian cars. This 15 rough car ride was like driving on moon or mars. The entire road or no road was very bouncy. It was impossible for any normal cars to travel on this surface. The mud volcano was spread over a big area. Some of us put on lighter on some big holes and fire started immediately. It all happens due to some geological process. We were told that there are pressurized gases and liquids under this surface. It is a small area in which there is a medium-sized volcano (about 2 meters in diameter) plus a lake and other small cones. very cool. The flaw in my opinion is the lack of an asphalt road and directions to reach them independently (even if you have a 4x4). We arrived with our car but we had to pay too much (50manat) on the spot to have one of the drivers take us to the area who are outside the museum... who cheated us by raising the price by saying that he would take us to a special area to see many volcanoes, but in reality I think that everyone nearby is taken to the same ones...

Well, what can you say! The bus dropped us off at the end of the road and we transferred to old soviet era Ladas for the journey across the desert. You couldn't really call them roads - there were tracks across the desert that the cars had made. Some of the cars in our group shot off in different directions. Our driver stopped at the bottom of a hill to add more water to the radiator before attempting to go up. Don't expect comfort but it's an experience in itself.
The mud volcanoes were impressive, great to see. Small hills occasionally bubbling mud from the top. Some had grown fairly high, 15 or 20 feet I suppose and the pool at the top was bigger too. Some children had obviously been let loose in one and they had black sticky mud up to their thighs.
One of our drivers took a bit of paper and dipped it into the mud hole then lit it. The mud contains oil and gas as it comes out from the ground.

A must visit place. We had never seen anything like this before. To see the mud and water bubbling was a nice experience. They say the mud has medicinal properties and application on the skin cures many skin issues.

Hi there,
I just came from Baku and found a wonderful taxi/tour guide and speaks english well. We paid him 100manat for halfday tour which covers a lot of tourist spots including mud volcanoes, Qubustan, Yanag dag and the fire museum.
You may call Elsan +994503707531 or +994559901822 He might not remember our name but if you show him our photos in Mud volcanoes and Yanag dag he will remember for sure.
