Temporarily Closed
Sep 2019 • Couples
I walked 30 minutes to get here only to find out it’s temporarily closed. No mention of this on their website. I’m guessing that the last reviewer mixed this place up with another museum as I believe it’s been closed for a while. Very disappointing.

We were in Baku during the second week of July, 2019. The museum was on our plan to visit, yet unfortunately, it is closed for renovations and according to one of the staff members, it won't be open for visitors before November - December of this year.
A real pity!

Intersting and informative

Taghiyev History Museum is an interesting museum full of information about Azerbaijan history and most exhibitions have English. It's a little hard to find because the entrance looks just like other buildings. If you want to take photos, you need to pay an extra 2 manat. I spent about 2 hours here and had a good time.

The map here is incorrect, however the address is correct. The entrance is on Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev Street, but the signage is poor and several locals didn’t know where the entrance was.

Overall, it has a slightly neglected feel, but there are some interesting items. The display of some isn’t great. The building is worth the entrance fee, the interior is fabulous and the reception rooms are amazing.

Beautiful building , nice artifacts !

This museum is very big and interesting ! It depicts very well the history of Azerbaijan with large displays of artifacts and good explanations about them . The most impressive part is the building that houses the Museum . It is a former mansion owned by a very rich oil baron of the XIX century ! We spent close to 3 hours learning about Azerbaijan .

Good museum

It is also known as the national museum of the History of Azerbaijan. The places showcases artefacts related mostly to the ancient history of Azerbaijan and the region. Expect to spend at least an hour.

Most interesting history museum in Baku
Aug 2018 • Solo
The most interesting museum in Baku! I took an English speaking guide who told me about the life of Haji Zeynalabadin Taghiyev, and explained the displayed artefacts. In fact all displays are explained in Russian, Azeri and English on labels adjacent to the exhibits thus after the guided tour I took another stroll through the museum on my own.
Born into a poor family Taghiyev already worked hard in his childhood to support the family. With his savings he bought some land and found oil and through further investments into the textile, food, construction, fishery and shipbuilding industries became incredibly rich – from rags to riches. Remarkably he used his wealth also for charity and philanthropy e.g. construction of national theatre, school for girls, scholarships for students so that they could further their studies in foreign countries, etc.
His mansion with more than 100 rooms was converted to the present day museum (renovated in 2008) after the communists took over in 1920, however, they also removed a lot of furniture and valuable items. The museum depicts the country's development from early days till present era, with influences of Persian, Ottoman and Russian occupiers.
The exhibits are shown on 2 floors, in amazing rooms, even a winter garden, Taghiyev must have had a very good taste. Entrance fee is 10 Manat (about 6 US$), the fee for the knowledgeable guide was another 10 Manat. The museum is closed on Mondays. It will take 2-3 hours to see and process all the information, in fact I told myself to visit this museum again very soon.
Beware, the location on Google Map of Tripadvisor is wrong, the museum is in the center of the city, in Haji Zeynalabadin Taghiyev Road. The museum is also known as HZ Taghiyev History Museum, under this name the location of the museum is correctly indicted on google map.

It was established in 1920 in the palatial mansion of the oil Barron Haji Zeynalabadin Taghlyev. It is built in the Renaissance style and designed by the Polish architect Joseph Golsawski and confiscated by the Red army in 1920.the nisei has many sections like the modern history one, the ancient one and the medieval one so that one gets to find out Azerbaijan’s history from the Neolithic period to the present one. One gets to feel the volatility of religion and culture by seeing the Persian, Ottoman and Russian 8nfluences. Artifacts range from traditional and milita4y clothing items, sculptures, murals and manuscripts
