This was one of the first places we visited on our tour of the caucuses region. It does show the respect that is held for the people who lost their lives. This particular area is well laid out and leads to the monument with the flame burning in memory of those lost.
Unfortunately, as we travelled around the three countries (Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia), the loss of life in conflict became a recurring theme. They have not been well treated in the past. Even so, they are a friendly positive people and we wish them well for the future.

For Azeris, this is place of sorrow and pride. This is where people who respect freedom movements and memory of those who died for their Motherland, should come and pay tribute. Read some information about Black January 1990 and Karabakh prior to your visit to better understand the purpose of the monument.

You go through the rows and rows of black grave stones and you get a feeling of sadness at so many lives lost.
This is a very important site to visit as you get a greater understanding of where Azerbaijan has come from.
Also great view of the city.

Very nicely done memorial for those who lost their life fighting for independence from Russia

This was an interesting aspect of my trip to Baku and I would recommend at trip here to anyone who comes to Azerbaijan - you will see close-up some of the country's history which is absent to anyone who spends all of their time on Nizami Street or around Fountain Square. It is heartbreaking to see that the youngest victim of the January 1990 aggression was only 13 years old.

Go there to honor freedom fighters who gave their lives for the independence of Azerbaijan from Soviet Union. This is a very important place for Azeris, so go visit it to honor it, walk speechless and realize what happened just recently to this brave nation!

Its worth a walk past these graves. It is essentially a grave yard, actually a grave lane. Martyrs honored well, all documented on the wall behind carved on granite slabs as tomb stones.

People here were killed by the soldiers of the Soviet army in 1990 20th of January. They were civilians not soldiers who wanted to be independent and killed by the Soviets.

A must see if visiting Azerbaijan. Not only is the view of Baku bay stunning from the high park, but it also gives a deep insight to the history of the place, some of the darker events that had happened. Tourists and locals often purchase flowers from nearby and leave it on the graves as a sign of mourning, a very moving sight of Baku...
