This small mosque is on the outskirts of Sonargaon. It takes a bit of searching to find it. But it's worth it. The brick work is exquisite. The isolated location adds to the splendor. Do your best to find it on your trip to Sonargaon.

The Goaldi Mosque is a mosque in the historic Bengali capital of Sonargaon. It is one of the few surviving medieval monuments in Sonargaon, Bangladesh. Such a beautiful architecture standing more than 500 years. Entry is inaccessible, so had to enjoy outer view only.

Built in 1705 during the Mughal era, this is a very ancient mosque in Sonargaon. Back then Sonargaon was the administrative capital of the medieval Muslim rulers of East Bengal (modern day Bangladesh). Sonargaon falls under present day Narayanganj District of Bangladesh. This mosque is more elegant and ornate than other earlier Sultanate mosques of the country. The Goaldi mosque is a good example of the 'enclosed square type' mosque of Bengal that is distinguished by a cubical prayer chamber with corner towers and entrances on all sides except the front wall. A single central dome caps the top of the mosque and engaged ribbed turrets run along each of the four corners.

This mosque in Sonargaon was built in 1705, but its origin dates back to the early 15th century. It is a nice example of pre-Moghul architecture. It is not as lavishly decorated as some of the later mosques.

Dating from 1519, the mosque was built under the reign of Sultan Hussain Shah, making it of the pre-Mughal period. It was in ruins before being restored in 1975. While there was no access to the interior, the three mihrabs can be seen, the central one of basalt. It has one dome. The reddish orange bricks must be spectacular as the sun sets. The four turrets at the corners are typical of what would be seen at Bagerhat. The highlight for me was the intricate panel work on the exterior walls. This is a rewarding detour.

Goaldi Mosque is situated about six Km northwest of the of Panam nagar at Sonargaon. It’s one of the oldest mosque in the then Bengal. According to historian, it was built more than 300 years ago. It’s the square type single-domed Mosque. There is a cubical prayer chamber with corner towers and entrances on all sides except its west. This is a most impressive old historical site to pay a visit for the history lovers and to observe precariously surviving old single-domed mosque, which is a good example of ancient architecture.
