This was by far the hidden surprise of our visit to Islamabad. It was very well kept and the descriptions of the various displays were very informative. Different regions, ethnicities and civilizations were quite skillfully represented. I would definitely recommend a visit to this museum.

This is such a well-maintained museum that takes you on a tour of Pakistan through the years, all while highlighting the different cultures by state (province) in the country as well. You get to see different art forms, like calligraphy, pottery, weaving, music too. The entry fees are minimal and the are is clean and well organized.

Heritage Museum, Faiz Heritage Library,Lok Khaba, Sharbat Point, Artisan Bazar, Craft Bazar, An Open Air Theatre, A Media Centre, Zarsanga Hall, Mai Bhagi Hall, Museum Hall and Pakistan Monument Museum, Lok Virsa houses all these unique and incredible places with the slight exception that Pakistan Monument Museum is located atop the Shakarpariyan Hill next to the Pakistan Monument(which is administered by CDA). Some reviewers have said that a visit to Heritage Museum requires half a day, but in reality the time required to take in the scope and beauty offered by Lok Virsa is actually a week at the minimum because there are various programs which take place at Lok Virsa in different parts of the week. Media centre is home to Mandwa Film Club which plays a different movie every Saturday. An Open Mic takes place on Thursday and Sunday. Now the Faiz Heritage Library has started it's own literary series for youth. Overall, the place is a bustling hub of activities focused on advancing cultures of Pakistan. If you want to subscribe to the various programs happening at Lok Virsa then walk into the ED block and get yourself registered by giving your email ID and phone number. Visit the Lok Virsa page on Facebook to remain in the know. And oh yes, one vital detail which I am getting my head around to now, is that Lok Virsa is the body which administers the all-popular Heritage Museum. While the museum brilliantly showcases ethnology of Pakistan, Lok Virsa works on various other cultural aspects. So there's that too. It's really a gem of a place.

There is a very nominal entrance fee, and it was good to note that the entry fee for foreigners is much higher (still peanuts if you convert it into dollars!). The museum is surprisingly well laid out and well-maintained, so that it’s easy to go through it systematically. The setups and props provide a wonderful insight into Pakistan’s colorful history and culture, from well before the time of the advent of Islam in the region to the present day. The mannequins have better and more realistic features than Madame Tussaud’s! TVs are installed throughout the museum, which constantly show videos on our rich handicrafts industry; I was particularly fascinated by the amazing art of ajrak-making by block-print. Outside, there are some snack shops as well as several shops selling handicrafts. My only complaint is that it was rather warm and stuffy inside the museum, and they should improve the air-conditioning and ventilation system. A must-see when visiting Islamabad.

Lok Virsa - A one of a kind museum in Pakistan, is definitely worth a visit whoever comes to Islamabad.
The museum showcases the rich cultural heritage of country.
Student tickets available and photography inside the museum is allowed now (wasn't allowed when I visited 2 years earlier)
On the down side exhibits are not adequately introduced and even some items have no introductory tag or something.
Highly recommended to everyone.
