Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Interesting old building to visit.
We came as part of a tuktuk tour and were met by the resident guide on arrival.
Gave good insight into building history.
Worth a visit, it won't take up much of your time.

After reading that it was worth a visit I was more than happy when the opportunity presented itself for us to drop in. If you didn't know it was there you would probably pass this magnificent old building without noticing it. Make sure you wander upstairs and get the caretaker to show you around - his English isn't great but he will enthusiastically show you many of the interesting quirky facets of the city's original council chambers - check the windows, you'll not only get a great view but you'll appreciate the ingenuity of their design. As previously indicated entry is free but you can't help but give the caretaker a tip.
Downstairs beneath the building in the open air area is this eclectic collection of municipal objects from mayoral robes to an intricate model of the new town hall to street signs through to a stream powered truck. It's free so there's no need to pay any of the women sweeping or hanging around the displays.

The markets in the surrounding area are more interesting. Be aware of the guy hanging around at the front door, forcing you to pay him for a tour.

A lovely place to visit though the city's forefathers need to do more to restore the place and the belfry in close proximity to it (the Kayman's Gate) and preserve their historical importance. Was intrigued to see the things from centuries ago that are housed at this location.

I would suggest people go to the old town hall to experience the enthusiasm and pride of the guide rather than the quality of the exhibit itself. The guide was so proud of his room full of dummies dressed up as a council meeting from 1906. He also emphasised that the broken adding machines were made in Chicago, USA. Incidentally, the upstairs council rooms are a great vantage point to take photos of the busy market place. Entry was free but the guide did appreciate a tip.

In the neighborhood of Cinnamon Gardens, there is the old town hall which stands by a major traffic circle and has a market surrounding it.
Nice building to see that reminds the colonian period.

It's very rare to find historical evidences for 1800s culture of Colombo city. At this place you can find a small (indeed very small) museum which has Steam powered road roller, and a lorry, Gas lamps (used before the electricity comes), fire water points and some street name plates used 150-200 years ago in Colombo. Since the Steam and gas lamps era is vanished from modern cities, it's worth to see these items at least in a museum.
The place is at the Gas-works junction and the surroundings are very dirty. Museum is not maintained well.
Recommended only if you are a history lover. Regular travelers may not interested by this. Spending just 10-15 minutes is sufficient.

It stands by a major traffic circle and has a market surrounding it, so the old building makes a nice picture amid those. However, they weren’t letting anyone in so I don’t know if there’s still a museum inside.

This town hall built in the mid-19th Century was built in the Venetian Gothic Revival style then popular with British Colonials. Mumbai has many such examples. The main characteristic are the large Gothic revival windows on the second floor. There is a similar building in Galle. The town hall is now somewhat swamped by the market and surrounding commercial district and could use a paint job. The town hall now contains a museum of old machinery and other items. It is worth a visit just to see this important colonial structure and you can get a feel for the market from the surrounding area.

The inside was closed and when you go into the outdoor section you get followed by people who will give you information- of course they want a tip a the end for their services - but you do not really have a choice to not have them. The artifacts that are outside are really neat to see. So strange but fun.
