We spent three hours wondering the exhibits which are arranged into four categories: Natural/Geological, Historical (Medieval), Historical (contemporary) and Artistic. Plenty of information in English. Tour guides available for 40 somoni. Entrance 35 somoni for foreigners plus a 10 somoni fee for taking pictures. The exhibits were interesting and well-curated. The taxidermy section gave us a giggle but was still informative. It would benefit from a coffee shop and a wider souvenir store. At the end we were pleasantly fatigued after an enjoyable time of learning about Tajikistan.

On entering the vast museum complex which had a few historical statues on the grounds was immediately attracted to the indescribably beautiful rose gardens .The museum itself is unique in design having a elliptical roof and giant atrium and a total area of 24 000 Sq m, of which over 15 000 Sq m are exhibition halls. Entrance price was 35 Somoni( TJS) .It is composed of four exhibition departments A)Department of Natural History,B) Department of Ancient and Medieval History, C)Department of Modern and D) Contemporary History and Department of Fine and Applied Arts. The reclining Buddha statue and the skeleton remains of a Queen are considered prime archaeological exhibits in this museum.

    Excellent Museum
We enjoyed an interesting guided tour of the National Museum conducted in English. It is a very large museum with so many exhibits on Tajik history and archaeology. There is a huge reclining Buddha, probably the centrepiece of the museum. If you like museums, this is the place for you, by far the most extensive collection of any we visited in our week in Tajikistan

A beautiful museum with a knowledgeable and helpful staff. There are so many ancient artifacts, arts and textiles, natural stones found in Tajikistan, and beautiful artifacts from their long history. The museum is beautifully arranged, beginning with the walk through a blooming rose garden in order to reach the entrance. Plan a whole day if you want to see it all. If you have only half a day, you can choose the floors you are most interested in. It isn't crowded, and the guide who took us through part of it was so helpful and interesting. We spent such a pleasant and interesting morning there.

We enjoyed our time spent in the National History Museum of Tajikistan. We learned much about a part of the world that we were not familiar with. The art displayed was very current. Some of the painting were so new that we could still smell the paint!

When I travel, I do so to learn about the country I am visiting. This means learning about its historical, cultural and artistic heritage. This museum, although old and not well kept by American or European standards, has everything. You will be quiter surprised when you walk into one room and see a 50 foot long reclining Budda. Really. Go by all means.

The National Museum of Tajikistan is an imposing building with a large park complex surrounding it. At the center of the park is the world's tallest flagpole. Each floor is different and there seem to be samples of Tajik history from all eras. The basement floor has a replica of a reclining Buddha found at the Ajina-Tepe Buddhist monastery and a natural history section with a few impressive displays of landscapes/ecosystems with taxidermy (many animals including snakes and fish). My favorite exhibits were the early bronze/iron age artifacts and the late Tsarist Empire/Soviet Era items. We arrived later in the afternoon spent about an hour and a half in the building. In retrospect, having a tour guide might have helped although many exhibits did have English descriptions along with Tajik and Russian Language. No regrets, but based on my interests I would like to visit the National Museum of Antiquities the next time I'm in the city.

Tajikistan has a real national museum that has a great collection of genuine antiquities fro the country's past, including the real reclining Buddha, in a small, Soviet-era building on the other side of town from this ostentatious, hideously-designed monstrosity. There's no indication that the pastiche reclining Buddha housed here isn't the real thing. Most of the other "antiquities" are copies of the real ones in the other museum as well.

It's even weak on kitsch -- I expected to see more cheesy portraits of Rahmon standing among flowers, or playing pool or surrounded by admiring children. The gifts he's been given by other tinpots aren't even that good.

Skip this and go to the other one.

My Fiance and i visited the museum in Tajikistan. Tajikistan is a very poor nation which has just recently entered the family of the free world and is steadily and progressively building its reputation as a sound and world class tourist attraction. The tajik museum certainly needs upgrading and in time with financial assistance and museum professional support, I am sure Tajik antiquities will be managed. It is unique to see an old fashioned museum in a country where the pay is very low. Therefore, I support this country's museum whole heartedly and would love to see art effects of the modernizing Tajikistan portrayed visually and artistically in the museum to exhibit its transition inoto the family fo the free world.

We visited this site to see the external sculptures, as we had been to the national Museum of Antiquities earlier in the day. It is easily reached by taking trolleybus 2,10 and 11 or Bus 8,13 23 and 37 to the Putovskiy Bus stop. After getting off the bus, cross the Ismail Somoni Avenue and the white arched entrance with gold letters will be seen. This is a great area to take a photo of the tall flag pole, which is in Park south of the museum. The museum is on the right, and is brown with white columns. The sculpture garden is well laid out, and includes a pond, sculptures and beautiful flower beds.

Just outside the museum is the sculpture of Cyrus the Great (600–531 BC), which is probably the most photographed. There are eleven (11) sculptures in the Park, and all have the year or century to which they relate, the name and a short commentary. Unfortunately this is all presented in Tajik, so the sculptures can be a little difficult to identify. Other sculptures which we recognised included Ghiyath al-Din Muhammad (1163-1203), Kanishka the Great (127–150), Avicenna  (980–1037), Ismael Somoni (849-907) and Rudaki (858-941).

The Park is itself an attraction, but we decided to visit the nearby Navruz Palace and Zoo, instead of entering the museum. Other interesting Parks within walking distance include the Amphitheater Park and Writers Park.
