The statue is the same one on the money of Tajikistan, and the currency bears the same name as the statue, Somoni. When you roam around the circle, don't hand over your camera to anyone, unless you want be charged a handsome price for the benefit of them taking your picture in front of the statue...and if you don't pay, you won't get your camera back. Ask me how I know:)

Located at the heart of this vibrant city a selfie, group photo or just a pic with the mountainous backdrop are all high on most visitor's lists.
The actual figure of Ismoil Somoni is 13 meters high although his surrounding arch extends the total statue to an impressive 43 metres adding to its imposing nature. If the monument weren't already grand enough, it is all topped off by a golden crown

Across the road, we can not miss the giant statue of Ismail Samani dominating the Ozodi square. This giant statue rises 25 meters high and is placed at the same place where the statue of Lenin once stood. The Statue of Ismoil Somoni wore a crown atop. The Ismail Somoni statue is one of the major monuments in Dushanbe and the symbol of the city. It is at the south entrance of Rudaki Park.

One of the most iconic statues in Dushanbe that celebrates Ismoil Somoni, the man whom the currency is named after. Ismoil Somoni was the founder of the Samanid Dynasty in the 10th century.
Well worth a look both at the monument and the square.

Most impressive monument at sprawling square, located at central place this is Statue of national icon Ismoili Somoni, a 10th century Samanid ruler. Two lions adorn the Statue on both sides. A must visit. Evenings are beautiful with aesthetic lighting. It's free to visit this Monument.

Obviously in the center of Dushanbe stands Somoni, the recently discovered hero of Tajikistan. Since independence it was crucial to find a nationalistic figure to replace Lenin, an unpleasant reminder of Soviet times. So it was that Somoni got his statue on this huge granite pedestal. For an Islamic country, it is slightly awkward that he fought off the Muslim invaders, but nobody minds now.
It is a good area to visit : beautiful parks, Rudaki, the flagpole, it's all here.
When I visited first, the hundreds of fountains were dry, so I came back the next day for some more photographs. Very pretty when they work.

You can't miss this massive statue of Ismail Samani in the center of Dushanbe, Tajikistan.

Monument of Ismail Samani born in 849. With the end of Soviet rule in Tajikistan, Ismail's legacy was rehabilitated by the new Tajik state. He is depicted on the 100 banknote.

The Somoni monument is probably the most popular attraction in Dushanbe. It is located in Dusti (Friendship) Square which has an interesting history. This area is easily reached by Trolleybus 2 and 10 or Bus 8 and 23. The monument is opposite the Parliament building, at the intersection of Rudaki Avenue and Jalol Ikromi Street. Care must be taken when crossing here, as it is a very busy area. The 13 meter tall monument to Somoni is dwarfed by a 43 meter arch directly behind, which is topped by a golden crown. The arch has a golden interior design, which we thought was similar to the decorated inner areas of Iwans which we had viewed in Bukhara.

On either side of the arches, are lions in a relaxed pose. The lions may seem strange in Central Asia, but in the 10th century when Ismail was ruler, the Caspian (Turanian) Tiger was a common sight. The sculpture of ismail, shows him standing with scepter in his right hand. The scepter includes the seven stars seen on the emblem of Tajikistan. The monument was installed in 1999 to recognise the 1,000th anniversary of the end of the Samanid State, which ruled this region between 819 to 999. To the west of the monument is a great tiled map of the Samanid Empire at it's greatest extent. The Empire covered portions of all Central Asian countries, Afghanistan, the western region of Pakistan and 2/3 of Iran. The capital city was in Bukhara, where the Samanid mausoleum, which includes the tomb of Ismail, can be visited.

Ismail Samani lived between 849-907. In 865 he was given authority to rule Bukhara, and was elevated to ruler of Transoxia on his brother's death in 892. He was successful in military engagements with the Saffarids, and expanded his empire in 900 to include Khorasan. He is famous for spreading Sunni Islam throughout his Empire. The Tajikistan currency (somoni) is named in his honour, and the 100 somoni note and 50 drams note bears his image.

The Square on which the monument rests was initially constructed in the 1930's. In 1949, a monument with the Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic was installed. This was similar in design to the current national emblem, but had a red Soviet star in the middle. In 1961, a sculpture of Lenin replaced the monument. The street leading to the square was also renamed Lenin Square. The Lenin statue was removed after independence in 1991, and a statue of Abulqosim Firdavsi installed. The Square was then renamed "Ozodi" (Freedom). This statue remained until 1999, when the Samani monument was installed and the Square renamed Friendship Square.

Other attractions nearby include, the clock monument at the stoplight, the National Library and Independence monument, both a short walk west, and Rudaki Park, which is north of the monument.

It is a statue of the founder of Tajikistani statehood, Shah Ismail Samani (Isma'il ibn Ahmad) of Samanid dynasty (849-907AD). The statue was commissioned in 1999 following celebrations in the honour of the 1100-year anniversary of the Tajikistani Persian statehood.
