When it comes to exploring a city’s authentic dining scene, while the stomach should ideally serve as the best compass, the truth of the matter is that it’s hard to find your way without good local advice. That’s where Culinary Backstreets’ Culinary Walks come in. In order to help you explore the world’s gastro-capitals and get off these cities’ eaten path, CB is offering (with selected partners) guided culinary walks in some of the cities we cover, starting with Istanbul, Athens, Barcelona, and Shanghai. Our culinary walks are designed to lead visitors on an eating binge through a city’s lesser-seen historic side streets and authentic markets, taking in countless hard-to-find culinary gems and, in between bites, a select number of untouristed monuments.

I can't write enough wonderful things about this tour. I only had two full days in Istanbul and I decided to spend one of them cruising around eating! It was MAGICAL. Not in a million years would I have found all of the gorgeous and interesting nooks and crannies that I did while on this tour. It was incredible. Truly.... More

I've gone on many of Culinary Backstreets walking tours in Istanbul and they have all been excellent. The guides have been friendly, well informed, and happy to pass on tips about neighborhoods and culture. One tip would be book a tour early in your stay in Istanbul and if possible around the neighborhood you are staying in. Better to find... More

Our guide was the amazing Benoit (Selim). A tour that was meant to last for 5 and half hours took 7 hours. Nothing was rushed or too much to ask about the spectacular tastes, sounds and smells of the tour of the Bazaar quarter in Istanbul. Our first true experience of Turkish food and the richness of their culinary history.... More

An incredibly fun, informative, and delicious way to spend the day! I've now done two tours with Culinary Backstreets (Two Continents, Two Markets and the Meyhane tour) and both were top-notch. The restaurants and shops are all family-owned, dedicated to their craft, and ones that you would NEVER stumble into on your own. It's such a great way to explore... More

I did a full day tour with Benoit who was excellent. He has such a thorough understanding of the different cultures and ethnicities within Turkey which comes through in the many, many food tastings. All the headliners are there - kebabs, pides, baklava, coffee. But loads more as well, from soup to sage tea to offal to borek to a... More

I only had one full day in Istanbul, it was my first time and I knew I loved Turkish food. This tour is how I chose to spend my only day in this amazing city and I have zero regrets. I went on the Culinary Backstreets tour in the Bazaar quarter with Benoit, a Belgium born local that has called... More

We were shown the best treats of Istanbul by Uğur Ildız, the knowledgeable, friendly, and well-spoken guide of our tour. From vegetarian to meat and seafood dishes, we thoroughly enjoyed the diverse and unique selections that were provided to us. Most importantly, most of these dishes were ones I wouldn't have tried otherwise--either because I wouldn't know to order them,... More

We were in Istanbul for four days in which the weather wasn't great. The day of our two-continent tour with Culinary Backstreets was the worst! Rainy, windy and cold. And yet, thanks to the warmth of Gonca, is was our best day. Gonca took us for a unique breakfast and a tour of a deli-type store on the European side... More

I was so fortunate to be introduced to Culinary Backstreets by a very knowledgeable foodie friend. The tour I took (Culinary Backstreets of the Bazaar Quarter) was brilliant and fascinating thanks to our wonderful guide Gonca. She was warm, knowledgeable and enthusiastic despite a cool and rainy day. Her tour brought me to alleyways and into ancient buildings I would... More

Staying in Grand Bazaar

Neighbourhood Profile
Grand Bazaar
Tourists, hawkers, and locals come together at the Grand Bazaar to comb its labyrinthine passageways in search of a bargain – be it a pair of brand name jeans, a handcrafted silk rug, or a perfectly brewed cup of tea. Outside the vast bazaar, worn, narrow streets wind their way down from its lofty perch to the southern shore of the Golden Horn, where the evocatively aromatic Spice Bazaar beckons alongside the elegant New Mosque (opened in 1665). Nearby, the famed Galata Bridge offers pedestrian access to urban delights across the river in Istanbul’s more residential and contemporary neighbourhoods, while the must-see sights of Sultanahmet are but a leisurely stroll away.
