When it comes to exploring a city’s authentic dining scene, while the stomach should ideally serve as the best compass, the truth of the matter is that it’s hard to find your way without good local advice. That’s where Culinary Backstreets’ Culinary Walks come in. In order to help you explore the world’s gastro-capitals and get off these cities’ eaten path, CB is offering (with selected partners) guided culinary walks in some of the cities we cover, starting with Istanbul, Athens, Barcelona, and Shanghai. Our culinary walks are designed to lead visitors on an eating binge through a city’s lesser-seen historic side streets and authentic markets, taking in countless hard-to-find culinary gems and, in between bites, a select number of untouristed monuments.

We did the 2 continents tour with Gonca and have to say we were beyond impressed. Everything from the Pre-trip communication to the itinerary of the tour and the variety of food was outstanding. We had some of the best food we've ever had. On top of it all Gonca was warm and friendly. I felt like family by the... More

Just finished the "Two Markets, Two Continents" tour with Remziye. She is delightful, charming and full of knowledge. My friend and I had a wonderful day of walking and eating the hidden gems of glorious Istanbul. Take this tour at the beginning of your stay, as you might want to revisit a restaurant later in the week. The food was... More

This gave us an opportunity to see where the local people live, work and eat. Our fantastic guide Gonca took us on a magic carpet tour of the hidden Istanbul. We met the proudest and finest bakers, restauranteurs and street food magicians. If you have only one day in Istanbul do this tour which is so much more than a... More

I went on this food tour on the Sunday while I was staying in Istanbul. Ugur was the tour guide and did an excellent job. We tried so many different local delicacies and visited a number of different locations. Great way to also visit the Asian side of the city.

We took the Two Markets, Two Continents tour. It was wonderful. It was well put together. Nice breaks between eating and tasking fruit drinks or coffee. Everything was delicious. The tour was on a nice pace. It was just wonderful. Take this tour!

I did the Bazaar tour with Gonca and had an amazing day eating my way through the backstreets of Istanbul. No doubt about the name Culinary Backstreets! It was a a great day meeting the local merchants and seeing a totally different side of the same touristy area that I had already visited. Gonca is an amazing, attentive guide that... More

Amazing day of eating our way through Istanbul. Gonca knew all of the merchants, shared the local customs through lovely stories, and cared for us like sisters. The food was plentiful and lovely. Tip: don't eat breakfast before your tour and get a workout in first because you'll be so full!

We had a wonderful walking/eating tour with Gonça. We started in the spice market with a detailed discussion of breakfast and instructions on drinking Turkish coffee. We walked through the spice market and the various food vendors...going to all the best vendors and eating delicious foods. We walked and walked, discussing different foods and traditions, ending up in the Kurdish... More

My husband and I did the "Two Markets, Two Continents" walking food tour in Istanbul last Sunday, and it was quite delightful with Ugur, a great guide, and two other interesting couples. We quickly lost count of all of the unusual and delicious foods and drinks we tried, and our favorite turned out to be a food we always though... More

Staying in Grand Bazaar

Neighbourhood Profile
Grand Bazaar
Tourists, hawkers, and locals come together at the Grand Bazaar to comb its labyrinthine passageways in search of a bargain – be it a pair of brand name jeans, a handcrafted silk rug, or a perfectly brewed cup of tea. Outside the vast bazaar, worn, narrow streets wind their way down from its lofty perch to the southern shore of the Golden Horn, where the evocatively aromatic Spice Bazaar beckons alongside the elegant New Mosque (opened in 1665). Nearby, the famed Galata Bridge offers pedestrian access to urban delights across the river in Istanbul’s more residential and contemporary neighbourhoods, while the must-see sights of Sultanahmet are but a leisurely stroll away.
