The Historical and Luxurious Art of BathingHistorical and Architectural Features“I hope that until the end of days, good hearted friends who take a look at what I have made, when they will perceive the seriousness and the spirit of my effort, can have a fair view and can invoke my name to pray for me.” Mimar Sinan, ArchitectThe Ayasofya Hurrem Sultan Hamam in Istanbul was designed and built by Mimar Sinan, the chief Ottoman architect. It was built at the request of Hurrem Sultan (Roxelana), the wife of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent in the 16th century. It was built where the ancient public baths of Zeuxippus used to stand, between the Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sophia. The area is also particularly significant as the site where the Temple of Zeus once stood.

It was blowing a blizzard outside, I was frozen to the bone, so I decided that I would take a look inside this hamam. Once inside I was instantly seduced into paying the full rate for the best treatment. It really is a little paradise secluded from the outside world. Aesthetically it's beautiful, and the hamam wash is a dream.... More

my wife really wanted to try this Hammam/Spa after the buzz the TV series. So was really expecting a very touristy experience. Well, it was not the case. it is a true Hammam experience. we took the full package and from the first minute you are treated like a Sultan. I had Mardy as a therapist and he did very... More

First time trying a Turkish hamam, and it was a great experience! Ordered the full treatment (2 hours) for 110 euros, and it was worth every penny! Both the bath and the massage was great and very professional. Highly recommended!

Stopped for a visit during a layover in Istanbul and had a wonderful Keyf-i Hamam experience. The staff is friendly and courteous. I would definitely go back.

I have been to many hammams in Turkey - public, hotel, fancy, simple and all over the country. Nothin matched this one! At first, I asked myself if I was mad paying 5-10x the price of a standard hammam... no I wasn't! The place is simply stunning and you're treated like a princess. The staff are polite and caring and... More

I am not the person who likes public bath. But, out of curiosity and the love for great architecture, I decided to give it a go. I had a 110 min AB-I HAYAT bath package with 50 min dry massage. Luckily, there were only three people being washed in the bath. The massage was done at the room in the... More

I booked the AB-I HAYAT treatment with my sister and it was a wonderful way to start off our trip in Istanbul. We were quickly shown to our change room for the day when we arrived. We waited our attendants in a heated room outside of the baths. My attendant introduced her self as “mom”. She spoke very little English... More

I cannot say enough good things about this hamam. This was by far my best spa/hamam experience...beats all spas/hamams that I've tried all over the world. Reservations are required and it is a bit costly being rated #1 in Istanbul-- you can expect to pay $110+ for a little over an hour. I booked a 45 minute hamam and 30... More

This was the most relaxing experience after a long weekend walking around the city. Ensure you are walking into the correct gender's area as they are not as readily marked as they should be. The interior of the baths is gorgeous and grand. The bath/massage combo was an excellent choice both from a price and satisfaction standpoint.

Staying in Sultanahmet

Neighbourhood Profile
Sultanahmet
With so many unmissable attractions within a mere stroll of each other – and all set around the site of an ancient Byzantine hippodrome – Sultanahmet is an overwhelmingly popular tourist destination, and a prime location for visitors to be wowed on a truly epic scale. Beyond the wonders of the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and more, this relatively small area of Istanbul somehow manages to retain an air of peace and calm. It offers visitors a significantly less celebrated but nonetheless pleasant network of quaint lanes and side streets, majestic panoramas of the Bosphorus, and an impressive assortment of accommodation options for all budgets and tastes.
