The original church on this site was built by Constantine, and the church you see now pre-dates the Aya Sofia. There isn't much here, as it's on the grounds of Topkapi and was used by the Janisseries as a storage facility and arsenal for years....More

Whereas Hagia Sofia, the main church of old Constantinople, is full of beautiful mosaics, Hagia Irene has none. That is because in the beginning of the Middle ages when Muslims started winning wars, the Byzantine emperor thought there must be something right with their religion...More

We were pleasantly surprised to find Hagia Irene open, as our guide books said it was only accessible for concerts. Well, it's right to be used as a concert venue - the acoustic is astonishing! I sang a few bars and the sound that came...More

One of the most important and interesting buildings in Istanbul let down by lack of interpretation, bird net ruining all the main views and no access to the upper level or the rear courtyard. And pricey. But, even so, brilliant.

There is not much to see - the interior is totally bare, but it is still majestic and will certainly be worth a visit for those familiar with the history of Bysantium. I recommend getting a museum pass, then you can drop into Hagia Irene...More
