Neighbourhood: Uskudar
Home to more than half a million residents, Uskudar on the Asian side of the Bosphorus is one of Istanbul’s most densely populated neighbourhoods. Once a Greek colony, later a haven for people from across the Mediterranean and the Middle East, this gateway to Asia has been an active and diverse hub for eons. Still, visitors to Uskudar are often more overcome by its myriad treasures than by its many thousand residents. And with fairytale settings such as the “Maiden’s Tower” as well as grand examples of Ottoman Era architecture, plenty of parks, a gorgeous and lengthy coastline, and some of Turkey’s holiest sites, there’s no end to the sightseeing possibilities. Easily reached from the city’s European shores via a steady network of ferries, time spent in Uskudar reveals a “real life” Istanbul that many who experience find extremely fascinating.

Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

This mosque constructed by the order of Ottoman Sultan Ahmet III for his mother is a strong example of Ottoman architecture in early 18th century. Its construction took place between 1708-1711. The tiles inside, work of Tekfur tile workshops that did not last too long, are quite rare. This is not a touristy mosque, therefore, is much calmer and much more mystical in many aspects.

There are many mosques dotting the area around the Marmaray Station in Uskudar. We were in the area on a Friday morning and stayed until early afternoon just in time for Friday prayers. We performed our Friday prayers at Yeni Valide Mosque. Nice mosque, it has a free public toilet and plenty of ablution areas.
Before the actual sermon, the khatib gave a lecture about conquest of Constantinople. Everything was in Turkish but I got the gist.
Nice vibe.

I stumbled upon this mosque one morning after taking the ferry to Uskudar. It’s close to the ferry landing. And it’s gorgeous inside.
Plus it’s not a tourist site. I took my shoes off, went inside and found myself all alone in there. Just gaze up and admire the architecture, color and designs. This was my favorite mosque by far.

It was really extraordinarily beautiful, both from the inside and outside. Really easy to get in and out, without being too crowded and without an entering fee (Just remember you are required to take off your shoes before you enter).
It was exotic, and it was a plus that it is close to other attractions of the city.

Valide-i Cedid Mosque is located at Üsküdar shore and very easy to miss at first sight as it is relatively small, comparing to Mihrimah Soultan Mosque closeby. It was built 300 hundred years ago and reflects every detail of classic Islam architecture. As the prayers are not too many (except Fridays) and it is not a touristic mosque, you can visit it any time you want during the day. The courtyard is also nice place to spend time, watching the sky and the minarets.

A word of warning, majority of the photos on this location added by TripAdvisor users are NOT for this mosque! This mosque is in Uskudar near the Marmaray line. I believe it is a later mosque and there are some subtle differences in style to earlier mosques.

Built in 1711, this mosque is no different than many other Ottoman period mosques in Istanbul. It reflects the 18th century Ottoman architecture. It has been built under the order of Sultan Ahmet the 3rd for his mother at Üsküdar district.
The mosque has no specific features (maybe except the bird house on the façade) that will justify a special visit but in case you around this part of the town and you have time, then visiting it will not be a loss of time.

It takes you back to the ottoman age.. It's the first baroque style mosque built at the end of the 18th century... Each crest at the main gate has a different shape.. The mosque is very soothing...

Looks like it will be nice after the million dollar construction she is going under but closed for now unless you can weave your way through the workers since it seems like they are still open for prayer.

Absolutely special. Worth visiting, best in the evening when illumination gives it a particular charm. It is an idillyc place, quiet, beautifull, and you don't have to queue or pay to visit it. It' s my fauvorite mosque in Istanbul!
