The area
Neighbourhood: Beyoglu
Istanbul’s most famous street, pedestrianized Istiklal Caddesi (Independence Avenue), throbs day and night and offers a fantastic array of architectural sights, shops, treats, and throngs upon teeming throngs of people. At the avenue’s northeastern end is expansive Taksim Square, thought by many to be the very heart of the city, with many of Turkey’s most renowned restaurants and some of Europe’s most happening nightlife in close proximity. In striking contrast, Beyoglu’s less trafficked areas – such as the affluent Cihangir and the antiques district of Cukurcuma – exude Old World charm and provide contemplative calm and splendid diversion via an assortment of cozy cafes, attractive boutiques, and quiet lanes.

There is a hill removed from the street and you have to go down some stairs so you can go unnoticed but it has great historical and artistic interest. It is old because it dates from the late 16th century but suffered fires and all kinds of incidents and is very restored. It was built on that location because the land was donated by a Genoese lady, hence its name. Like pretty, the interior is nice but I found it somewhat dark.

I would never have seen this small church, hidden off of Istiklal St, if it had not been for a companion who had somehow obtained an obscure book on all the churches in the city.

It is ideal for a brief visit to get away from the hectic noise and bustle of the street. The art is fine, the ambiance is pleasant.

A small church constructed mid 1700. Nice frescoes and paintings. Franciscan Catholic Order keeps the church and give Mass on Saturday evening in Italian, 2 on Sunday morning and one in the evening.A nice quiet place to pray.

The Church of Santa Maria Draperis is about 400 meters away from - and on the same side of Istiklal Street as - the Church of St. Anthony of Padua, in the direction away from Taksim Square. (Very likely there’ll be a group of police officers close by, as seems to be the case with most religious buildings in Istanbul.)

The fastest way to find this church is to look for a statue of the Virgin above the entrance. At the entrance, notice the long staircase.

The original church was built in 1453 and rebuilt again and again thereafter because of fires and earthquakes. The current church was completed in 1769.

As is the case with St. Anthony’s, this lovely church is also a peaceful oasis right in the middle of Istiklal Street, perhaps the busiest street in Istanbul.

Sauntering the street of Istiklal, I dropped by this beautiful church. Another treasure of Istanbul. Taking photo inside the church is not allowed but you can take a picture of the building outside. Worth a visit when you want to brace yourself after spending too much time in shopping and sightseeing!

I saw this purely by accident. The mosaics and paintings are beautiful. The atmosphere is very quiet and soothing. Definitely recommended if you are in the area.

You have to visit it even if you aren't Catholic. It was one of my favorite churches I've ever been to and if you're ever at İstiklal Caddesi, you must visit.

If you are at Istiklal Street or somewhere near, it's worth to spend few minutes to look inside. The church practically isn't visible from the Istiklal Street, you need to turn into a niche and go down a few steps.
The church on that place was originally build in the 16th century. After few fires, in the 18th century the present church was built.
It's quiet and peaceful inside. The church has gorgeous altar, beautifully decorated ceiling, few paintings of the 19th century and lovely stained glass windows.
The church is kept by Franciscan orden.

Don’t miss this beautiful church if you are at Istiklal Street. It isn’t as popular as St Antoine church but it is well worth a visit if you are in the area. It is towards the Tunnel section of Istiklal.

Not for the handicapped though as you have to down and up quite a lot of stairs.

What a joy finding Santa Maria draperies. For more than 4 years and for several occasions, tried hard to find it without any chance. Finally after an hour walking,, decided to visit st. Anthony de padova, and asked him to find for me the lost address, without any doubts. all of a sudden a friar inside the church wrote on a small piece of paper the street number, so start jogging to find my treasure, I was happy like a child .thank u st. Anthony, and love you load mother Mary ,thanks god.
