Neighbourhood: Beyoglu
Istanbul’s most famous street, pedestrianized Istiklal Caddesi (Independence Avenue), throbs day and night and offers a fantastic array of architectural sights, shops, treats, and throngs upon teeming throngs of people. At the avenue’s northeastern end is expansive Taksim Square, thought by many to be the very heart of the city, with many of Turkey’s most renowned restaurants and some of Europe’s most happening nightlife in close proximity. In striking contrast, Beyoglu’s less trafficked areas – such as the affluent Cihangir and the antiques district of Cukurcuma – exude Old World charm and provide contemplative calm and splendid diversion via an assortment of cozy cafes, attractive boutiques, and quiet lanes.

    A Beautiful Catholic Church
I stopped by St Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church on my recent visit to Istanbul. I actually stumbled upon it while I was walking down Istiklal Street. It has beautiful architecture and is worth a visit.

    Serene
St. Anthony of Padua Church, located in the heart of Istanbul's bustling Istiklal Avenue, is a serene church featuring neo-gothic architecture. Known locally as Sent Antuan Kilisesi, this is the largest Roman Catholic church in Istanbul. Inside, the church exudes a peaceful and solemn atmosphere, with its elegant stained-glass windows and ornate altar creating a sense of reverence. As it's Christmas, the church was also decorated with Christmas deco. It's a symbolic melting pot of diverse congregants, reflecting Istanbul's multicultural fabric. The church not only serves as a place of worship but also as a symbol of coexistence and tolerance in a historically diverse city.

    Tranquility
One of the ways to get to the Church of St. Anthony of Padua is to take Tram 5 to the Tophane tram stop, cross the main drag, then climb up Throat-Slitter Street (a.k.a. Bogazkesen Cd.) right across from the tram stop. This Everest-like route ends at Istiklal Street. Istanbul is built on seven hills. I think the term ‘hills’ might just be a slight under-statement. The tram stop is at sea level, and the church is at the top of a ‘hill’ and almost immediately to the left on Istiklal Street. For me, the easiest way to find any religious building in Istanbul is to simply look for a group of cops! And sure enough, that’s where the church was. The Church of St. Anthony of Padua is the largest Catholic Church in Istanbul. The current church was built in 1725, but eventually demolished, with the new church built on the same site between 1906 and 1912. The church has a stunning interior. It’s amazing how quiet and serene this church is, given its location on one of the busiest streets in Istanbul!

I was surprised to see that the entire pews are all cordoned off. There is no place to kneel down or sit when saying our prayers. The altar is beautiful as well as the stained glass wimdows.

There are men working on the scafoldings and there is a strong smell of either varnish or paint here. I quickly said my prayers here and left.

A hidden gem that you should not miss out when visiting Istanbul. This remarkable church is located at istiklal street near Taksim square. Once you enter the church premises you will be surprised by the astonishing amount of peacefulness and holiness aura and the amazing exterior and interior design of this church.

The Church of St. Anthony of Padua is the largest Catholic church in Istanbul and can be found just off bustling İstiklal Avenue. Small in size and relatively new given the city's complex religious history visitors should not expect the grandeur of other European churches, but the space is well maintained and appropriately adorned for its purposes.

very nice Roman Catholic church,

however, shameful Christmas service focused on the hyype int he town - the security was rude, grabbing praying christians by the arms and manhandling them, screaming at them in /turkish.
While understandable that many non-christians attending the service to see Mary and Joseph walk with Jesus intot he church, the Roman Catholic church needs to refocus on what is important here - Jesus, our Lord and Savior and people adoring Him. Not pure commercial stuff. Shameful how Christians were treated during the service - and non christians as well. Hope the priest of this parish rethinks his approach and offers something for christinas in years to come.

I was walking through Taksim when I saw this church out of the corner of my eye. It is set back from the main street and hidden amongst all the shops in the area. Seemed a bit out of place but that added to its charm. The church is in its own little courtyard away from the crowds of Taksim to the point you hardly know where you are once you get off the street. The church itself is beautiful and artistic and peaceful. Worth the visit for some peace among the shopping crowds.
