Istanbul Modern is a very pleasant art gallery. Its size means you can comfortably look around in a full morning or afternoon. It has a nice cafe/restaurant with sea views. The art is mostly Turkish but partly from around the world. There are several video displays. It is very interesting and mostly rather enjoyable. When we visited there were two... More

I have to admit that I am not 'arty' but I really enjoyed my time in the Istanbul Modern (Art) Museum. It is located on the Asian side of the Bosporus, close to Tophane tram stop. It was rather hard to find on the day we visited, as it was accessed through the building site of what will be its... More

"Istanbul at 2016 is a very "bubbly place a lot of tectonic movements of contradict streams and the Istanbul Modern is the place of the opposition. its a place that embrace the conflict and rise questions that are very important to the human condition I think . everywhere. he is doing it in a very courageous and fresh way

Nothing in the current exhibition drew my attention as being particularly inspired. However, it was a pleasant wander through the gallery spaces.

This is an interesting building, situated right on the Bosphorus. It houses very interesting - and changing - works from different artists. Quite a contrast to the other, historical museums. The restaurant upstairs is very good and offers great Bosphorus views - unless a large cruiser is berthed right outside!

The modern museum was a delight in that it was an impressive array of modern and thought-provoking work. The main floor housed some of the most interesting art more so than expected for a famously conservative country. Lower floor was a bit of an afterthought but most of your time should be spent on the main floor.

The museum is great with various exhibitions of paintings, art installations, short movies and also a cinema downstairs. Was lucky to be there on time for a movie festival presenting turkish movies that have won awards at various festivals. The movie was great and included in my ticket price.

Depending on the exhibition on the run, you may end up seeing different stuff, but you should definitely think of having a breakfast or lunch at its beautiful restaurant/cafe by the Bosporus. Try to get a table outside during May-Oct time.

we went on a rainy day and were amazed by the wonderful art on display. It was also quite fun to watch the ship traffic on the Bosphorus and have a snack at the restaurant next door. Wonderful venue!!!

Staying in Karakoy

Neighbourhood Profile
Sitting pretty with an age-old air about it, Karakoy is situated on the European side of the Bosphorus at the mouth of the Golden Horn. Perhaps the city’s most historically significant area, it’s currently one of the most happening parts of town as well. Here street vendors and alfresco fish restaurants line the banks of the Horn where the views of major attractions across the water rival Karakoy’s own key attractions, such as the iconic 14th century Galata Tower and the Museum of Modern Art. A major hub for local and international waterborne traffic, Istanbul’s commercial and maritime heritage remains as relevant and evident as ever in Karakoy. Commuter ferries mingle with luxury cruise liners at its busy port, ensuring a continuously cosmopolitan flow of people..
