This was a scheduled stop on our Celestyal cruise excursion to Ephesus. Watching the women with their looms and the speed at which they ties the knots was an interesting and educational experience. Also, we got to see the silk 'cocoons' and how the silk threads are extracted and wound to make the threads used in the rug making. We... More

The silk collection and the making the rugs was fascinating and the ladies that make these rugs are amazing. How they don't loose count is extraordinary. The finished carpets are just beautiful. I found the selling of them a bit intimidating to say the least. We have come home to await our rugs that will take pride of place in... More

Our tour group stopped at Turkmens Art and Rug. As with all tours, a few destination stopovers will always include shopping opportunities (if you want to call then that), of local products. This was no exception, as the tradition of carpet weaving is a centuries old practice within Turkey. An interesting demonstration first, of the ladies and students working on... More

We specifically asked to have a stop at a a carpet-weaving centre as part of a private tour organised through our cruise line, and were extremely happy with our experience at Turkmen. Given the extent to which the local economy has been hit by terrorist attacks in other parts of the country, we were expecting a greater level of pressure... More

My excursion to Ephassus included a stop at the Turkmen Carpet Weaving Centre in Selcuk, Turkey before returning to our cruise ship. Amazing skills are put to work creating these beautiful carpets ranging in a wide variety of sizes, colours and fabrics (cotton, wool and silk). Their hospitality was very warm offering us a drink during their demonstration. However, beware... More

The pressure to purchase is too intense and if one shows any sign of interest than you've had it. Feels like a pack of wolves pounced on you. The carpet making process is very intersting otherwise.

This was an advertised stop with Insight Tours on a Celestial Crystal Cruise. Respect and appreciate the outstanding work done by this company/organisation to preserve and maintain the culture and heritage of traditional carpet/rug making by local villagers into the future. Of course there is going to be a bit of hard sell, but these gents were very respectful with... More

We did purchase a carpet there, On our way back to the cruise ship, we priced the same exact carpet it at a store close to the dock , and the price was half of what we paid....and that was their first offer price. They misrepresented the product as being their exclusive and that the weaver worked directly for them.... More

This was an unadvertised stop on our Celestial Cruises Tour and turned a very positive day into a nightmare. Our guide told us about this Weaving Centre that was to encourage younger girls to learn how to weave. It is sponsored by the Turkish Government, but it is in reality a high pressure carpet sales event. The company that sells... More

This trip which is advertised as a cultural insight into Turkish folk life is nothing but a high pressured sales presentation for selling carpet. We went on an excursion organized by Celestyal Cruises and found ourselves at this Centre even though it was not listed as part of the tour. Sedat Gurbuz is the lead sales manager at this operation.... More
