Built by Suleiman the Great in 1537, this is considered Jerusalem’s most grand and ornate gate. There are seven gates open: New Gate, Zion, Dung, Jaffa, Lions’ (St. Stephen's), Herod’s, and Damascus (Shechem).

Grand entrance that leads to the Souk Khan el Zeit, the vegetable market, the Muslim Quarter and the Christian Quarter. Can be very busy, but that adds to the charm. The presence of the Israeli soldiers spoils the atmosphere, but otherwise, this also leads to...More

This and the Jaffa Gate of the Old City are probably the only gates worth seeing. The really interesting thing about this gate it that it's entered downhill, while all the others are entered uphill for obvious reasons. The gate can get clogged with stallholders...More

When we were here, the Muslim quarter was not open to the public. We didn't know about the opening hours so we wasted a bit of time here, as there was nothing to do for tourists at that time.

We used this beautiful gate to enter the old town. If you are not close to this gate, you can skip it, it's not more special than the others.

The big dominant gate opposite bus station. Go through this gate and find yourself in the old town, a completely different city. A city full of smell, taste.

My favorite gate as it is right across the Street from the Garden Tomb and is the entrance to both the Arab and Christian Quarters. A lot to see and buy.

go through, the left and then right a bit down the hill and change money with Sir Omar on the right side of the steps. (NOT the guys just inside the gate who charge an obscene commission!) Then a falafel at the point. Left to...More

It is always such a privilege to visit historical sites such as the Damascus Gate - it is unfortunate that such sites are not always kept clean, as with this one. Otherwise, worth the visit.
