About
The seal of a biblical priest who served in the First Temple, a rare silver half-shekel coin that was used for the Temple tax according to biblical law, arrowheads from the destruction of the first temple, jewels, and many more exciting discoveries were made over the years while sifting soil from Jerusalem's Temple Mount. Many more treasures are still hiding in this unique soil and you have the opportunity to discover them! Over 250,000 people already took part in this endeavor, will you also be part of this huge public heritage preservation project? Background: Since 2004, the Temple Mount Sifting Project has been sifting the soil destructively and illegally bulldozed from the Temple Mount in order to preserve, research, and publish the archaeological history of this ancient and holy place.

    One of a kind experience
Amazing experience. Most museums give you a nice history lesson, but here it really comes alive. They tell the story based on artifacts they have found on the temple mount. But the best part is that YOU get to be part if that. You are the first person to sift through your bucket of rocks. You don't know what you will find there. It could be coins, it could be pieces of a mosaic floor from the first or second temple. It was the highlight of my trip.

Touching and discovering 3000 years of history
I met the Mehani family in the morning and sought to understand what they wanted to do. A couple with a teenager studying here for the year. The young student, Ovadia, said, an activity, something to do. We were later joined by another family also with teenagers. For logistic reasons we came 45 minutes late and we were still greeted warmly, saw the movie, and go to work. Everyone enjoyed it. One found a tiny bronze ring which was an earring from the time of the First Temple. Another found a jar handle impressed with a seal. It will be taken to the lab to be treated and perhaps letters will become clear. l

    Alone at the Top
I was the only one in my sifting session which was great. I know that the sifting site people would want every session full but I enjoyed the 1:1 attention of my guide. I was able to accomplish more and didn't have to worry about making a mistake. This was a fun experience and I would recommend it to individual travelers as well as couples and families.

Fun and educational for our family
Such a great time. We did this 13 years ago, so it was nice to come back with our kids and see them enjoy the discovery process. The staff are so helpful and knowledgeable, and do a great job interpreting and contextualizing the finds.

Hands-on history, archaeology, and fun in one place!
This was an absolutely amazing opportunity! My wife and I could spend all day there. Just to think we are finding historical artifacts from the Temple Mount is at once humbling and exciting. We highly recommend it! Thank you to Yuval and Melissa for being so kind, so patient, and so very informative. We definitely want to go back!

    Unexpected Gem
So much fun! Even more than expected. We're a family with grown-up children (20, 18, and 15) and visited the Sifting Project as part of our vacation in Jerusalem. This was an unexpected gem! The activity is very captivating, especially if you find rare items. You WILL find something - even if it's just pottery. The weather was good - not too hot - as the location is shaded and situated on top of a hill, providing a constant breeze. Plus, you spray water frequently, which helps keep the temperature cool. Highly recommended when you are in Jerusalem. Not only for kids!

    Great day out
We just about made it for our English 1pm start but Chayim was very relaxed and put us at ease ( there were others later than us) He gave us a litte talk before we watched the video presentation. Then comes the treasure hunting. For me it was so exciting, we found pottery, mosaic pieces, bone . I found a piece of marble which Chayim said could have come from the temple courtyard and my daughter probably got the find of the day with a mosaic piece with gold leaf on it . One of the staff said it was from the dome of the rock early times. So much history at yoir fingertips. We sifted through 3 or 4 buckets each and Chayim rounded it off with an explanation of the day's finds and a good history lesson Cold water fountain and toilets there too

The Temple Mount Sifting Project is such a unique experience. We absolutely loved it! This is a great activity for people of all ages. There were some younger families participating as well as older people. The Temple Mount Sifting Project was started after many, many truckloads (around 400) of debris were removed from the Temple Mount during an unpermitted construction build. Archeologists were not able to look at the site before the removal took place. You are sifting through the material that was removed. This is what makes it so unique! Once the debris is gone, the project will be over! After learning a little bit about the material and how the project came to be, you get straight to work. The process of explaining what to look for and how to do it is very straightforward. You pick a bucket of material that was taken from the site and start looking. Everyone found something - marble, nails, pottery, beads. I found a coin!! Even on a very hot summers day, it was comfortable working as it is a shaded area. If you are a fan of archeology or are just looking for something different, you will absolutely love this calm and fun activity!

Our group arrived to the sifting facility amidst cold temperatures, wind, and rain. Though we had been to the old site a number of years ago, we were not sure what to expect at this new site. In short, we enjoyed a wonderful, unique experience in this beautiful Jerusalem panoramic setting. We started out with a movie about the dig and toured artifacts in the warmth of a floor beneath the sifting area. Then we went up to the sifting location where we received a tutorial of how to sift and what to look for in the process. After our actual sifting work, one of the lead staff gave a historical review of the importance of our work, what has been found by others, and what treasures we found. This is not a prepared set-up so that you will find artifacts. It is the real thing—the participant is actually sifting dirt that does offer important archeological finds from thousands of years ago. It is exciting for all ages. And happily, it is under cover with protection from the rain. There was some discussion that the program may only continue through part of 2023. Check before going to sign-up and hopefully you will be able to participate as we did.

We've taken several of our grandchildren (10 years old & younger) to the Temple Mount sifting project. They loved it and asked to go again. The kids learn some history and archeology and the painstaking but rewarding work of searching for ancient archeological treasures. They also learn that a "treasure" is not necessarily made of silver or gold but can be carved stone, pieces of marble, metal, or anything that can shine a light on the lives of people hundreds and thousands of years ago. The staff is great and patiently explains what to look for and how to look for it. I recommend this wholeheartedly both for the educational aspects and the sheer fun of playing Indiana Jones.

Our family took part in the sifting project on a hot day in August and we all, ages 4 to 63 enjoyed the experience . Our archeologist guide Yuval managed to engage all ages with explanations, history and background. The children ( and the adults) especially enjoyed the sifting and were excited with their findings- one of which was a small fragment of the rim of a pot from the First Temple era.
Despite the heat the area is shaded and comfortable and we also enjoyed the shaded picnic area.
We highly recommend this activity for all ages .

I'm glad I chose this place, the people working there were all nice, friendly, and knowledgeable.
I went there last month with my 66 year old father, we had a very good time.
What you need is a relatively good eyesight and attention to detail.
During our sift/search, my father and I found various different tiny treasures like a historic coin, mosaic patterns, and a tiny piece of gold.
My father and I went there during off season (not during festivals where there would naturally be more visitors) and yet we still got to see a few other small groups of visitors there amongst us, and people from different parts of the world.
I'd most definitely come back, and might even choose this place to go with someone on a date with at some point in the relationship.
It can also be good place if you're looking for some one on one time, all while doing a helpful activity
Finding parking was super easy, it was free, and about 50 meters near the place.
