Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Getting a tour with Susan was insightful, and it made buying the products at the gift shop more meaningful. The elderly artists seemed happy to have people stop by while they are working, perhaps because it adds yet another level of variety to their day. If you come with a tour group, try to get to do a hands-on project to help the 200 elderly who come there to work each day.

This was my favorite part of our Jerusalem trip. We took a tour and learned about this organization that assists the elderly and enables them to create beautiful artwork. The cause of this place is beautiful. We saw people who had immigrated from different countries all working together to create handmade goods that we were allowed to purchase. My heart is full with the concept and work of this place. They do ceramic work, metalworks, stitching, painting, and so much more.

This wonderful shop and workshop is located on a quiet side street near the Underground Prisoner’s museum and Russian Compound. You can find unique, handmade scarves, note cards, Yahrzeit candle holders, tsedakah boxes and more here.

When you buy gifts here to take home, you know that you are supporting good people and a good cause with a something made in Jerusalem. The staff are helpful and their shop is air conditioned.

Yad LaKashish is a great place to visit. This organization has about 270 elderly people come 5 days a week to do crafts that are sold in the gift shop and on-line. It truly gives these people a reason to get up in the morning and go someplace where they can do something productive. These elderly artisans receive breakfast and lunch before heading back home. Yad LaKashish is the real deal in helping the elderly be productive members of society.

We were very impressed with the way they treat poor, elderly folk. They provide them with a bus pass, teach them arts, keep them gainfully busy, then feed them a hot lunch. Their creations are quite beautiful.

I'm not sure you can get any better than this beautiful artists' collective. We attended in the afternoon, when the artists had gone for the day, but I'd read about Yad L'Kashish beforehand and so knew about the project and all the good it's done for the local elderly. The shop is of course open even when the studios aren't, and the work is beautiful, bright, and utterly unique. We ended up purchasing some earrings, kippot, and tallitot--and my wife had to pry me away from the 'bag o' plagues' finger puppets! There's a lot of gorgeous Judaica, homewares, art, and in particular things for children (toys, hats, etc). Really, something for everyone. I only wish that the artists (if they wanted to) signed their names on their pieces. It'd make this even more special. Can't wait to go back again, this time when the studios are open, but even if you can't visit, please visit their shop online or ring the very sweet shopkeeper (who speaks perfect English, if that's a concern) if there's something in particular you'd like. For example, they have only a handful of tallitot on the web shop but dozens in the store, and all are beautiful.

I first went to Yad LaKashsish over 30 years ago and was impressed with how they were giving seniors on the fringe meaningful work and somewhere to go every day.

Re-visiting in July with my family, we were equally moved this visit to see the many seniors creating beautiful crafts, each to their own ability. Their pride in their work was obvious despite language barriers. It sparked my teenage kids to want to do better for seniors back home.

The gift shop is inspiring and a great place to buy gifts to bring home, as every shekel gets plowed back into the organization. The product range is much greater than any "regular" gift shop and everything is lovingly hand-made. And the prices are terrific.

We emailed ahead of time and were able to add a hands-on activity to do after the tour and before the shopping.

"There are no grumpy faces here."

I'm quoting the manager, Julie, who was talking about the elderly artisans of Yad L'Kashish, but that statement is just as true for the shopper/visitors.

The artisans work in bookbinding (the first program), ceramics, metal, recycled paper, knitting, textiles, silk painting, papier mache, etc.

On this trip I bought a stunning hand-made metal circular wall hanging that quotes Psalm 137 -- "Im Eshkachech Yerushalayim...." (If I forget you, Jerusalem....").
