About Alex Stein Israeli Tour Guide
I'm a licensed tour-guide based in Jerusalem. Originally from London, I've lived in Israel since 2006, and I'm passionate about its people, history, politics, buildings, and landscapes. Having travelled widely around the world, I can say with confidence that there is nowhere else with so much packed into such a small space - historical cities, deserts, mountains, lakes, beaches, great food, a diverse population, and a tremendous, life-affirming energy. It would be my honor to guide you during your visit to Israel, and help you to understand more about the country.

Overview
Our tour of the Old City takes in all four quarters and key sites including the Western Wall, the Temple Mount/Haram al-Sharif, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, and the Jaffa Gate. Throughout, our focus will be on understanding why this small area of land on the edge of the desert has been so fiercely claimed by Jews, Christians and Muslims, and why today it is so fiercely contested by Israelis and Palestinians. What can we see today that might help us explain how it came to be this way? Why are its holy sites so important? How did its four quarters come into being and how do its different groups interact? And what is its relationship with the new city which surrounds it? Along the way we'll take the time to experience the immense beauty of the Old City and its buildings, viewpoints, coffee-houses, and hummus joints.

Alex is your guy to experience and begin to understand the complex history/culture and politics of The Old City of Jerusalem and Israel as a whole. His depth and breadth of knowledge is amazing yet presented in a very relevant and understandable way. He is well versed in all three Abrahamic faiths. Alex is light-hearted, with a quick wit and a song readily to his lips (luckily, with a great voice). Walking through the Old City, you must have good footwear and be of pretty good mobility (lots of steps and unevenness). My husband and I were with Alex for a weeklong tour, throughout much of Israel, and he was knowledgable in all regions. Each day, I looked forward to being with Alex for another day's journey. He's also very attentive to the details of the needs of a tourist and recognizes how important sampling local food and drink, music, etc. is to the quality of a tour. Alex, cheer!

Alex led a group of us around the Old City of Jerusalem on a chilly Sunday morning in January 2020. The weather didn't matter. Alex warmly welcomed us outside the Jaffa Gate and had us in good spirits throughout with his engaging manner, clear voice and ready wit. He's a natural. This was my first visit to Israel and my first time being professionally guided around such an historic place, so I'm grateful to Alex for putting things crisply into context, inviting questions from the group, pausing at opportune moments and generally ensuring that we all had a thoroughly positive experience. I recommend a tour with Alex very highly indeed.

My wife, our son and I did a family tour of Tel Aviv and Jerusalem with Alex. This was our first trip to Israel and both tours provided a fantastic introduction to the history, food and culture of the country. Alex is a great communicator and was even able to keep our 3 1/2 year old son engaged during the tours. We had a great time - thank you Alex!

Alex has a clear passion for the history, people and culture of Israel and this shows in his highly energetic and engaging guided tours. We did a morning tour of the Old City, taking in not only the well-known landmarks but also many others with interesting histories that we wouldn’t have found without Alex. Around every corner he points out something interesting, thought-provoking or just plain amusing. His depth of knowledge adds so much to the experience. I’ve done tours of Jerusalem before, but I got so much more out of this tour with Alex. A most memorable experience. Highly recommend you look him up and book a tour when you visit Israel!

Alex is a very good guide. He quickly worked out what we wanted and then over the next 6 or 7 hours gave us a wonderful introduction to this extraordinary city. With a deep knowledge of Christianity, Judaism and Islam, he was able to put the history in the context of art, architecture and religion. He did so with great erudition, clarity, humanity and where appropriate, levity. He also introduced us to the best hummus stall in the city! He left us burning with desire for a return to get another dose of Jerusalem, hummus and Alex!
