Most information on this place is out of date. You can just drive up and show ID and go in. You need a car to get there and to explore the site. Try to go in winter as the summer would be punishingly hot and there is no shade. It is very well organized for KSA and in good condition.... More

Considering Saudi Arabia lags behind in maintaining historical sights, this one was well maintained and labeled. If you're not a Saudi citizen, you should obtain a permission from the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities. Fax them a letter from your sponsor with the precise date (Hijri) of your visit with the other regular details (Employment Certificate). They will return... More

If you have the chance to travel to Saudi, then Madain Salih, has to be on your list of places to go. Only open to tourism relatively recently, you have the place almost to your self, there are over 100 tombs and you are free to wonder, only the archeological sites are fenced off.

We had a fantastic time here. Not the easiest place to get to and not very commercialised which after visiting the other Nabatean city of Petra was great. Hardly anyone there which allowed a very relaxed day and close access.
