Maison Jamsheer, a cosy and down-to-earth dwelling made of local materials, located in the many bye-lanes of Muharraq, is sure worth a visit. Renovation has preserved its past charm. The entrance from the street leads to a centre courtyard with small trees and greenery. Mature Yasmeen climbers hug the corner of the open space and reach the terrace, a storey up. The architecture is far from perfect with the door frames slanting to the left and the stairs skewed which is what gives the place and earthy touch. Simplicity is seen all over the place with the right quantity of showpieces scattered over the place with a few paintings. Visited the house mid-December evening hoping to see the candles lit but they come alive only during events which are occasionally staged. The hostess was courteous and the caretaker treated us with freshly brewed coffee while we watched a documentary on a heritage confluence of gold and silk threads from India and France and the poetry woven in the hands of Bahrain women with the making of exquisite traditional embroidered dresses. After a walk among the many lanes of Muharraq, Maison Jamsheer was a nice break.…
