- geo3Calgary, Canada1,893 contributionsInteresting architectureOne of the compulsory stops on any guided tour, so you will likely see it when visiting Muscat. It's interesting architecture, but not particularly impressive; the government buildings across the street, and the Portuguese fort in the background, are much more grandiose. Nevertheless, worth a short stop.Visited May 2023Travelled soloWritten 25 December 2023

However, it is worth visiting this lovely little gem. Behind a large palatial gate, it's appearance is very unique. Like a jewel box it appears to be in immaculate condition sitting on a manicured lawn filled with mounds of flowers. The picture is completed by the fortresses standing watch on the surrounding hillsides. A parking garage and several lots are within a block.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 March 2024
- Dirk WAlexandra Headland, Australia10,147 contributionsObligatory stopThe Alam Palace is one of the residences of the Sultan. He has adopted the English system, where you can tell by the flag on top if he's in residence or not. You can only take some pictures at and through the metal front gate - no ordinary people allowed. The surrounding area is probably of more interest : ministerial and military buildings and a lovely little bay in front. I happened to see a number of small sharks in the water.Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten 24 May 2024
- MozzroomNew Plymouth, New Zealand674 contributionsNice For A Wander AroundYou can't actually go inside but are free to walk around the grounds anytime you want with some nice big open plazas and grand buildings to view. Bus No 4 from Ruwi bus station has Al Alam Palace as the last stop and will drop you at the main gate for 0.3 OMR cash to the driver. Nice place to wander for an hour or so.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 June 2024

When my wife and I arrived at the Al Alam Palace, the Omani flag was raised, which I learned meant that the Sultan was on the grounds of the Al Alam Palace complex. While we were not able to visit the inside of the Palace, the view from the gates are still impressive. Though not currently used as an official residence, this Palace is now used for official functions and to welcome foreign dignitaries and distinguished guests. Adjacent to the Palace is a magnificent white building that is a guest villa with its own pool, spa and manicured gardens that can be used as a temporary residence by those foreign dignitaries and distinguished guests!

Rebuilt in 1972 this colourful palace serves as a residence and guesthouse of the sultan. It is located on a large compound in the old city. Surrounded by rather dull looking white and brown government offices, the palace stands out as a rather fanciful structure. It is not a sultan's palace in Disneyland. I wonder how the other 5 residences of the sultan look like.

For a palace I thought it was a bit underwhelming. The design of the palace doesn't really match the ambiance of the rest of the city. I thought the National Museum across the palace had a much nicer exterior.
The only thing you can do here is to take a picture of the palace so If you don't have that much time in Muscat, I think it's fine to skip this place.

We hopped into a cab from the port on a very hot day. It cost us 20 dollars to get there but we had a walk planned for after the Palace. It was stunning and so worth seeing. You can only see it from the outside but it's beautiful. The flowers are colourful and add to the perfect ambience.

Interesting landmark easily visited in combination with the National Museum. Popular with strolling families and friends, especially in early evening, and at holidays. It was beautifully decorated with red, white, and green lights when we visited, just before the Nov 18 National Day.

Al Alam Palace is not residential palace. It is used to recieve dignitories and other official functions. It is opposite National Museum. One can walk up to the gate. There is lot of space in front of the gate and manicured gardens on the front right of the gate. It's a hood photo opportunity for tourists. For residents it's a nice place to spend time with kids once in a while. Jalali and Mirani forts are on the either side of it.

The palace of the Sultan wasn’t as impressive on the outside as I expected. However, our guide said the inside is magnificent. Ok, I’ll take his word for it because I would expect that to be the case. The gardens on the outside were very nice, perfectly manicured, and beautiful to see. We walked around and took photos in the beautiful weather. Enjoyed seeing the palace.

Unfortunately not to go inside, not that I am aware of at least - hope this helps.
