Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Stories of strange, low-pitched sounds in the sand have intrigued people for generations in Qatar and it's one of the few places in the world it can be heard. The sound is caused by the friction when a thin layer of sand blows down the leeward side of the dune. The eerie resonant humming can be heard from up to 10 km away as it is amplified by the crescent shape of the barchan dunes. You can find the 'Singing Sand Dunes' 40 km southwest of Doha. Although singing occurs naturally, you can trigger it by sliding down the dune or running along its crest; you will be able to hear and feel the vibration. Take a large tray with you for an impromptu slide down the sand. Be warned - the sand is very hot during the summer. See the map for exact location.

Totally worth a visit and a good place to have a picnic and spend a few hours, probably better in Spring & Autumn when there are less flies, take something for the kids (big and small) to slide down and listen carefully for the "singing"

A serene place for our family. Definitely a nice spot to enjoy in Qatar when weather is favorable. Well, come to think of it, we also visit the place during extreme hot summer months. That is when you feel how desert living is, right?
There are no toilet facility in the area and desert bugs abound, helpful to bring layers of clothes and insect propellant when traveling with kids together with snacks and plenty of water! Great playground for kids, nice cardio work out for adults.. with dust and sand!

We have gone to the singing sand dunes many times. They are a rare geologic treasure. There are very few places in the world where “singing sands” occur.
Recently the Dune has been removed truck load by truckload over several months. A worker told me is was needed for construction. Much of the Dune is now gone.
It makes my heart sad to see this wonder lost for future generations.

The directions for getting to the dunes on other sites are a bit confusing, but it was easy to find using the GPS coordinates from another site: N25 02'29.7" E51 24'38.9" in Google Maps on my iPhone. As I was visiting Qatar I downloaded the map of the area which meant I could navigate without using data. I had a rental car but managed to follow a track up to the dunes.
I notice that Google Maps also identifies other singing dunes nearby, and it is the other one it finds if you search for "singing dunes".
Some good advice from the Time Out site: "Try some home-made sled alternatives: large serving trays work, as do bits of thick cardboard. For extra speed and durability, wrap the cardboard in plastic garbage bags – it will keep it together and help you glide over the sand."

A unique experience. First you have to find the dunes; then you climb to the top. Sliding down the side results in a sound like no other; a little base, a little hum, but most wonderful. A trip to Doha is not complete without a trip to the singing dunes.

This was an exciting tour of the dunes of the Qatari Southern Desert. Being picked up by luxurious 4x4 Jeeps we travelled 45minute drive along the coastal rout to the Sealine Beach resort Were the tyres were let down to soften then for the desert drive. This was exciting, exhilarating, magnificent and fascinating drive up and down the highs and lows of the hills of sand.after reaching an inland sea we arrived at an oasis were we were treated to Karak Tea before back over the dunes and the long journey back to the port..

Pack your sand board and explore the singing sand dunes just 45min drive from Downtown Doha. Because of all the construction and new roads, it can be quite tricky to find the sport, but in the end its easy to reach. You can park your car right at the bottom of the dunes and explore the area. Due to right combination of sand particle size, temperature and humidity the singing sand dunes in Qatar are one out of only 30 worldwide, so do not miss this unique opportunity to hear the sand dunes "sing". They emit an audible acoustic reverberation when moved or disturbed, so you have to go fast in order to hear the deep vibration. However, it is great fun to slide down the dunes, it is also very exhausting to walk up the dunes every single time, so be prepared :-)

So you drive up to the dunes not knowing what to expect but it was an amazing experience. You need to slide and move as much sand as you can with your feet and arms and soon you will feel the whole dune vibrate and sounds coming out of it. The trick is for 2-3 people to do it together to create as much ruckus as you can!
Only wish people would clean up after themselves here.
Point to note: no shops, no bathrooms just a couple of dunes.
Even though we went with a 4x4. It's not required

We have been there twice on day trips and once over night. The kids always have fun climbing up and then sliding back down. The weather can play a big part in how much you enjoy it there. If it is too hot or too windy, it likely won't be much fun. We usually see a few sand skinks every time we go and the kids will chase them until they burrow into the sand. 4X4 recommended but not necessary to get to some of the dunes.
