Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Owesome! and Unforgetable......... Everything for less of a dollar ( 1 $us ) and for children to 0.40 cents! :) Considering this is the unic zoo in La Paz, far away of the noisy city, we can find a little of the diverse native animals of Bolivia, since Llamas, Alpacas, Quirquinchos, native ducks, some fishes (XD sorry i cant remember the name of all) Condores, with a mix of tropical animals like Jaguares, lots of funny Monkeys, and more............ however i need to recognize that when you really get a little of interest on animals the zoo is not one of the best we could mention, sometimes it seems to be a little sad.. BUT! If we really like to share a good time while watching Wild Animals almost face to face this is a good zoo "YOU JUST CANT MISS OF WATCHING THE JUKUMARI BEAR" One of the amazest Animals of the region in Bolivia.......... I Recomend to visit this zoo that is in Mallasa (La Paz - Bolivia) near to the Moon Valley...... good place to visit at mornig (the zoo opens at 10:00 am) Noisy thing and ballons to play futball or something like that is prohibited there "it is said that there had been some troubles with that" .......... I ve allready visit it 4 times if you want some extra information just ask..... today: 14/11/14

The zoo is not exactly what Europeans would be expecting, which I think is the reason for some of the more negative reviews. It is home mainly to native species of the Andes, with non the ‘big ticket’ animals you would be accustomed to seeing (although there is a rescued circus lion who is extremely vocal!). Instead the pens are filled with Bolivian natives, such as jaguars, pumas, llamas and alpacas, sheep, rabbits and pigs. Whilst this may be underwhelming to some visitors, the zoo actually has a more important purpose – it raises awareness of and aims to combat animal trafficking in Bolivia. Most of the animals you see have been rescued from brutal lives as family pets or mascots, or from the booming ‘traditional medicine’ trade which values big cats in particular as prized cures. The zoo not only acts as a re-homing centre, but also has on site a veterinary clinic, where sick animals are nursed back to health, and it provides school groups with educational programmes, talks and volunteering opportunities. The staff are genuinely committed to the welfare and care of the animals they look after, and the zoo is well worth a trip to pay the 15 BOB entry fee to support the work they do.

Zoo is always so sad to me, so I can't tell how is this one but sad. Only thing you can see condor and jaguar and llama so for that it is ok. And there is a lot's of shade and grass where you can sit, eat and rest. Best thing was driving back from zoo to La Paz with local bus.

A well kept secret in La Paz is they have a zoo. It's in a suburb of La Paz called Mallasa. The same suburb where you will find Valle de la Luna. To get to the Zoo, go to San Francisco Plaza and look for a micro bus with Mallasa printed on the window. They come by during the day every 5 minutes or so. 2.5 bs per person. Take the bus right to the end, and you are at the zoo.
The big lagoon in the front part of the zoo is only a place for migrating birds to stop so if you don't see any ducks in the water just move on. There are also large carp but the water is dirty so if the person isn't feeding them, you probably won't see them.
The zoo has mostly domestic animals at it monkeys, birds, llama, alpaca, jaguar, puma, snakes, bears and a few I'd never heard of. It's about 1-1.5 hours to see everything, so it's the perfect compliment to Valle de la Luna (another 1 hour stop) 10 minute walk up the road.
It was 5 bs to go in (less then $1)

The ride to the zoo it's by itself a treat, a valley between mountains is the start point in Aranjuez. A Mini Bus is the cheapest transportation at 1,50 Bolivianos for the trip up the hills and down again to the entrance of the Zoo. A Taxi should go for 10 Bolivianos w/o a bargain. More comfortable of course. Once there, remember your ticket contributes directly to the maintenance of the place, unlike other zoo's. The Vesty Pakos is a shelter, a refuge for rescued animals, mostly populated by native species to the region and no exotic animals, unless an abandoned one is brought to them. They are not there for entertainment, they are there to teach us. You're supporting a great cause.
It's a vast open area, be ready to walk a while, mingle with the locals, you might end up having lunch with them in the green areas over a cover as they like to lounge while the kids play. Over 80 species find their home here.

Sent a couple of pleasant hours walking around the zoo grounds. As good as most zoos I have been to and for 5 soles excellent value. They only have Bolivian animals, so no kangaroos, although I did see a Puma. On the weekend afternoons there may be quad bikes for hire next door. I did 3 laps for 10 soles. You can catch the number 43 (mallasa) bus there or back for 3.5 soles

I was visiting a friend in La Paz in July and we visited the zoo about 2 hours before closing which was near sunset. There were very few people so we were able to view the exhibits with distractions or waiting. To the average person the animals seem to be well cared for. I was happy to see many local species that we would not easily see in North American zoos. We used Uber for transportation to the Zoo from the center of La Paz and that worked just fine. Very pleased with my experience.

This is a wonderful place with different animals that are found in most of Bolivia. It is spacious, well marked and relaxing. The signage system is interesting, explaining the reason for every rule at the zoo, which encourages one to obey the rules, and enjoy doing so. There are many shops at the entrance selling different bitings so there is nothing to worry about when it comes to what to eat, and many eateries across the road. The sun can get quite hot while inside the park so, if you do not have a hat, it would be wise to buy one before getting in.
Transport to the zoo can be a bit hectic, at least is was on the Saturday that I visited, so if you do not have a private car, it is wise to use a taxi.

we went here after Valle de la Luna and it's reasonable because it's not very far from it and we usually visit Zoo in each city; it's like benchmark how the administration takes care of animals. We were surprised in La Pas because it's pretty good: very big territory, now under renovation and repair; some interesting animals in very good condition; we saw condors, monkeys, giraffes, lamas, vicunias, etc. So it you have time, you should visit. The only problem - all cafes were closed, may be it was working day.

This was a nice pit stop on the way back to our campsite after the valle de luna but I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to see it.
