Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Jorge Eliecer Gaitán was a charismatic, leftist politician who was assasinated in downtown Bogotá in 1948. Gaitan became famous by denouncing the 1928 massacre of striking bannana workers, which Gabriel Garcia Marquez also wrote about in One Hundred Years of Solitude. Gaitan might well have been elected president, and his killing triggered enormous riots, during which mobs pushed over the city's streetcars and set them on fire. Today, the unused streetcar tracks still run past the site of Gaitan's killing, on Carrera 7 and Ave. Jimenez. The assasination site is marked by plaques and often flowers. It has become something of a pilgrimage site.

Gaitan was the charismatic leader of the Liberal Party in the 1940s. Depending on affiliation he was seen as a demogogue, populist or leftist leaning politician. Fact is his assassination in 1948 triggered an enormous people's protest movement against the conservative government.. Depending on affiliation this movement was called a riot culminating in anarchy, while others defended the outburst as justified protest and said focus on side effects like looting was just a way to legitimize brutal repression.600 to 3000 people were killed. In Bogota the turmoil was called Bogotazo. In Colombia as a whole the period that followed the events in Bogota is refered to as La Violencia.

This is a memorial - actually it is a few plaques on a wall - to commemorate where Gaitan was politically assassinated in 1948. To be honest it would be easy to miss unless you knew where it was.

There are just a few plaques on the wall but arguably the most important event in 20th century Colombian history happened here. If you're in the area it's worth taking a minute to stop by and acknowledge this.
Gaitan's assassination had repercussions beyond Cuba. Later that afternoon the reformist politician was scheduled to meet with some politically-minded college students from Cuba. Gaitan's assassination was the first step to convincing young Fidel Castro that the system couldn't be changed through democratic means. Castro claimed to have taken part in the riots that evening.

If you walk through the streets somewhat absentmindedly you could perhaps miss this monument. Usually though there are a few people in front of it reading the signs. The monument is near the location where the charismatic, idealistic leader was killed during presidential campaign. Important historically for 20th century history of Columbia.

There is a small plaque on the wall of a not very significant building in downtown Bogota that remembers an important event in Columbia's history when Gaitan, a significant political figure was assassinated in downtown Bogota in 1948. There were flowers and many small pieces of paper remembering the person and an interesting history of the event which resulted in significant disruption, damage and death.
