Walked through this square a couple of times during our stay in Candelaria. Lots of hustlers trying to sell chica the local fire-water, the square had good vibrant atmosphere on both visits. It is a big student hang out so the age demographic is quite young but we decided to stay for a beer on our second visit and quite entertaining to watch all the comings and goings. Not sure we would want to visit at night as the area looks quite run down.

Not the most amazing Plaza out there, but it is quaint and really cute. Most walking tours start there too, as a central point of the old city. There's also the oldest church in the city there.

A bit higher than the rest of La Candelaria, this is a small square where mainly young adults hangout. A lot of graffiti art on the walls of houses and two alleys descending towards Avenida Jimenez with cafés and bars, tattoo and souvenir shops. Locals frequent the place late afternoons and early evenings. When I visited a comedian was performing in front of the small church attracting quite an audience. A bit like Montmartre (Paris) end 1960s 'la Boheme', without the painters, but now graffiti seems the art of the day.

This is a very touristic spot, but it's worth it. The area has very quaint streets and cool bohemian restaurants. It also has a lot of graffitis and available free tours. It's really worth it.

El Chorro is located in La Concordia, the oldest part of Bogotá. The first time I went to El Chorro was in 2009, and it was edgy, yet vibrant and exciting, although I was told that even then it was safer than it had been just a few years earlier. My mother in law lives just a few blocks away, so we would walk there in the daytime and early evening to eat at my fave Bogotá restaurant/bar, El Gato Gris, but the late night was definitely out. Not so much for the Chorro itself, but for being followed on our walk home (something you should still keep an eye open for in La Candelaria or Concordia).
What a difference now. I saw more tourists in El Chorro in one day during my last visit than I saw in an entire week on any of my previous trips. There are shops catering to tourists and students alike, and while there are still plenty of hinchos (drunks) and the smell of marijuana still scents the air, it's definitely not the same as it was. The students still flock to the area at night to drink and enjoy each others' company, the bars are still lively, the music and performers still play in the plaza and the chicha (you must try the chicha!) still flows, but the menace seems to have left the area.
Perhaps its my familiarity that has made the difference, but it just seems to be much safer than it used to be. There's still an edginess to the place, but the potential for menace doesn't seem to be there anymore.
Don't get me wrong, I don't miss the menace bit at all. If you walk a few blocks to the south towards Egipto, you can get all the evening menace you need, but it's just an indication of how the neighborhood (and Bogotá in general) has changed.
Anyways, go there. Check out the shops, check out the chicha, enjoy the street art, the music and the electricity of the place. You really haven't visited Bogotá if you don't go there.

The Plaza del Chorro, in the La Candelaria neighborhood, is where Bogotá was founded in 1538. Today, it's a hang-out for students, tourists and many others. Many evenings you'll find jugglers, handicraft sellers, cuenteros (storytellers) on the church steps and often musicians.
The plaza is surrounded by bars and restaurants. They can be fun, of course, but don't exactly contribute to the colonial atmosphere.

All roads (or rather cobbled streets and alleys) seem to lead to this square, which is always thronged with people and where something's always happening. The history of it is quite interesting - look it up.

This small plaza, apparently recently renovated, is cute and pleasant with a small old chapel and a few other small old buildings around it as well as some newer ones. It is primarily significant as the place where the Spanish Conquistador Gonzalo Jimenez de Quesada supposedly founded the Spanish city in 1538. It is otherwise plain, simple, and not exciting. However, it is a pleasant little place to relax for a short period in the area of narrow streets of La Candelaria and is at one end of the Calle del Embudo, itself a much more interesting site - a very narrow old street lined with bars and brightly painted buildings covered in an intense array of graffiti and street art.

The Chorro de Quevedo is a unique little plaza at the top of barrio Candelaria. When it opened a few years ago, it was a beautiful attraction with that little calle del embudo (funel street) to the side. Now it seems full of local and foreign potheads that have filled the place with a bit of an unsavory atmosphere (like the Damrak in Amsterdam). This is not a dangerous area and if you walk by and stumble upon it, look at it and move on and continue enjoying the other attractions in La Candelaria.

This historical place in Bogota was recently remodelled, preserving its old style and escence with some minimal estructural changes, but it still is the nicest place to go and chill for a while, drink a good cup of coffee in Café Rosita or in Café Color Café, and if you want to share a beer or something else, lots of places around it will let you do it, right in the plaza liquor is not allowed and police can fine who they spot doing it besides they will spill the liquor(the worst thing ;P ) take good care of your belongings of course and look at the amazing sunset from the east three steps stairs and let your mind go with the beauty of history. ;)
