The park as a whole was nice to walk about. The zoo wasn't nice, very small cages for the animals, the big cats are all overweight. They even had a hippo who's enclosure was so small it was very upsetting. There is also a small museum type building full of taxidermy, which was very strange. The bontanical Gardens weren't bontanical Gardens.

A very big park. With a big green air and huge lawns. The zoo has several animals with highlighting for felines. Lots of tigers and brown ounces. The premises are large and the felines look well treated and healthy. Although the premises are somewhat decadent. Some animals like furons stay in a small compartment and look stressed. It has a wide variety of birds and Reptiles. A nice park for a walk, but nothing to surprise.

Having been to all capitals of South and Central America (except Caracas) I must admit that the generally not unpleasant city of Asuncion is also one of the greenest towns in this part of the world. I especially enjoyed my walk in the Botanical Garden.
From the entrance by Avenida Artigas start two hiking trails: the Circuito Mayor (4250m) and the Circuito minor (2705m). These two are for pedestrians, since there is also a 'Circuito vehicular', which most locals were using on the Sunday I was there. I went for the longer walk, which took me about 1 1/2h in a leisurely way. And I was practically alone all the time.
Walking on that trail one doesn't feel like being in a Botanical Garden, but in a naturally preserved local forest, with mainly deciduous trees, not too close to each other. Thus there is not always shade and sun protection is quite important.. I really enjoyed that walk, since one could also hear plenty of birds. Because there are several not marked branches it is not always easy to be on the right track. But it helps to know that every 250m there is a distance marker.
At one point one passes a grand traditional house, which cannot be visited. It was the summer house of the powerful president Carlos Antonio Lopez, built in 1840. The whole park was once his property, but then sold to a local bank. Two scientists of German origin, Carlos Fiebrig (of whom there is monument) and his wife Annae Gertz (a plaque can be seen in her honour) turned this area into the actual Botanical Garden in early 20th century. I was also interested to read that the Botanical Garden of Asuncion nowadays cooperates with the Botanical Garden in Geneva, especially in regards to the ethnobotany of the Guarani.
There is a zoo attached to it, but seeing a long queue I didn't bother visiting it. Instead I went into the Natural History Museum, probably the worst I have ever seen. It was a 19th century style museum with badly stuffed animals, dead snakes in glass and some Indian artefacts. To a friend I would say: Go and enjoy the lovely walk and forget about the rest.

We weren't sure what to expect from the zoo after reading other reviews here, so we were pleasantly surprised. It was quiet during the week but even as the first people there we felt very safe walking around (they've installed cameras and there are lots of staff around too). Some of the animals' cages have room for improvement but in general the animals seemed to be well looked after. They have a great selection of animals that are native to Paraguay and South America, plus impressive tigers and an elephant too. The staff are friendly and there were quite a few families with kids there. Entry was 7000 PYG per adult, which is less than £1 by the current exchange rate—bargain.
Two things to be aware of: the zoo has a pretty haphazard layout and is bigger than it initially appears with poor signposting. Also, definitely take water and bug spray with you as there isn't anywhere inside to buy refreshments.
Can't comment much on the Botanical Gardens as we were so hot and thirsty by the time we'd finished with the zoo that we left. They seem lovely, though more like a park than gardens as other reviewers have mentioned.

This Botanical Garden is HUGE and very beautiful. But the zoo is poorly set up, maintained and financed. The Municipal Government should shop it out to a third party for administration with the condition that it be made into a REAL ZOO!!!

If you like to see tucans housed with turtles, this is the zoo for you. Like a lot of things in Paraguay, the zoo is a bit unusual. They do have a nice collection of big cats.... tigers, panthers, and lions. And there are the snakes, big ones! It's worth a visit, but it is a bit sad. But I suppose this is the nature of all zoos.

Unless I missed them the botanical gardens only seemed to have trees and shrubs with very few flowers. The zoo was upsetting as the animals did not have much space. It is a difficult decision whether to visit a Zoo or not. My money helps feed the animals but when you visit a zoo like this you realise that giving an elephant or a tiger a tiny space is nothing less than cruelty.

The zoo has started a reorganization and improvement project of all cages. They're getting bigger and greener! Also, from now on all the animals' main characteristics are explained on signs.
