Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We went on a private Jodensavanna cultural tour and river resort Overbridge with the driver who was also our guide Kenneth, during our vacation to our home country Suriname for Christmas holidays in 2023 with the family which was the first time that we visited all 10 districts in one vacation.

He picked us up to do this amazing day tour of a 90 minute drive from Paramaribo to the Jodensavanna site in district Para that's in the middle of the rain forest where we've seen different animals, like tropical birds, slots, monkeys in trees (small ones), salamanders. This preserved site is an old Jewish settlement with rich history that shows how Suriname was ruled by Dutch Jews in this area during slavery and the exploited lives of their African slaves.

Kenneth was very knowledgeable about this history, able to answer all my questions and showed all parts with different installations and creations (some perished, but traces are still there), so you could see the difference made between the Jewish slave masters and their slaves. For example, the Jews were burried with a gravestone with their names on it, while the slaves didn't. Also the slaves that were mixed with Jewish blood didn't get a gravestone and were burried with the other slaves, since they were not 100% Jewish. I've learned that this old plantation was one of the thoughest and unkind. I've also learned that the descendents are one of the most notable peoples in Suriname (doctors, lawyers) and even the founder of the national soft drink company.

We ended the Jodensavanna tour with delicious lunch in picknick style at the site. Afterwards we went to visit the river resort Overbridge. The idea was to chill at the water and in the natural pool (they made a pool right in the front area of the river with the river water that is separated with low walls, very innovative), but it started to rain heavily. Well it's still in the rainforest area and the restaurant staff also said when we arrived that we were lucky that it was sunny, as it always rains. That was correct, since after 10 minutes chilling in the water it started to rain, too bad. We then got a small tour in the car, around the resort to see the cottages for overnight stays, before heading back to Paramaribo. We enjoyed the day trip!

Marina is an incredible tour guide, and I have learned an immense amount from her about Joden Savanne and Suriname. Marina made the history of Joden Savanne come alive in her tour in ways that will stay with me forever.

Interesting historical site consisting of graves, the ruins of a synagogue, and a small museum. It can easily be visited independently. Entry fee SRD 200 pp in 2023. The road there is very good until the bridge. Thereafter it’s 3km on a dirt road (well-maintained). Note that Google Maps might not show you the most direct way (which is via the MLK Highway).

This is a fascinating little stop if you’re visiting Suriname. It was especially interesting to me since I’m Jewish. You can walk through a gravesite of former slaves and their families and contrast it with the Jewish gravesite with stones dating back to the 1600s. It was all surprisingly well labeled and very informative with plaques written in English and Dutch. It takes about a half hour to see it all, and then you can go down the road 7 minutes for a gorgeous swim in Blaka Watre.

We stopped here by boat and were pleasantly surprised to see that the area was so well maintained; it looked overgrown from the waterfront. There is plenty of information about its history and it is nice walking around the ruins of the synagogue and the cemetery knowing this history.

We had the place to ourselves when we visited recently. There is excellent information about the former Jewish settlement and the buildings in both English and Dutch. A small museum with pictures and information about Jewish settlement across the whole of the Carribean. Well worth reading, especially if you have read any of Cynthia McLeods books on Suriname.

We visited Jodensavanne by boat, a delightful 2 hours cruise from our starting point south of Paramaribo.
The site is indeed a bit mysterious, as only a large cemetery remains plus the ruins of the synagogue. There are no remains anymore of any of the former plantation houses.
However we had the great advantage of a excellent guide for this visit who told us about the fascinating stories of Jodensavanne and its former residents.
The graves themselves are unique and tell the stories of the deceased via the tombstones.
