Definitely worth a visit - really interesting especially the exhibitions about the expedition of La Perouse and rescuing boat people. Very friendly welcome from receptionist.

A fantastic look at New Caledonias maritime past. Very interesting displays and treasures. Well thought out and set out. Lots of areas for children to interact with all things maritime. Great for learning. Spent a long time there and enjoyed every minute.

This museum has several interesting exhibits about New Caledonia's maritime history. I liked the exhibit on the La Perouse expedition. The exhibit on the New Caledonian ship that played a role in the rescue of the Vietnamese boat people was also interesting.

Greetings,
If you are a lover or in "love" with anything Maritime, go to this Museum. What may have been an hour at most for some was 4 hours for us. The books available (French/English) are well worth perusing and buying if that is your wish. A true delight. The staff are the gatekeepers of this history and is worth every moment spent there. Our gratitude for the Receptionists knowledge, care and consideration is something that priceless in these museums.

Wanted to go back and visit the Museum once again and what a surprise, the HMS Endeavour was here so we got to visit Captain Cook's ship and the museum for the price of one. We only had access to the deck which was a shame, would have loved to have a peak inside the galleys.
Some of the items displayed a long time ago were not present anymore. Still had fun visiting the place.

we visited for a snapshot of local history which we got, but it is a small museum.
Some great information about the local reply to the first Vietnamese "Boat people" in the late 1970s - makes you feel lucky to be alive in a good way.
Very good information gives a feel for the place.

Lots of big ship wrecks in these reefs...

We visited this little gem on our last day in Noumea. At the time of visiting it was being renovated so part of it was closed off. On entering we were greeted by a lovely young man who took us downstairs and showed us around what was open. Most of the information was in French but we were given translators if we needed more info. It was free and filled in a lot of gaps that we didn't know about around the First World War.

We went in thinking doomsday shipwrecks but Le Musee Maritime was so much more. Signage was excellent in both French and English and I was so fascinated reading about the history of all aspects maritime in New Caledonia, that I didn’t actually take any photos. Well put together and well worth a visit.
