This is probably the most spectacular restaurant building I've ever seen. A pair of giant golden ducks support an opulent pagoda on their backs. The restaurant is in an upscale park in Yangon. The park, it should be noted, has many very good open-air restaurants, but the Karaweik Hall is where to go for entertainment. The interior consists of two long halls with a stage at the end of one. The service is excellent but the food is buffet style and totally unremarkable. However, the show is terrific. They have at least a score of skilled dancers, backed up by a small troupe of musicians, performing numerous traditional dances. The cost of my meal, with a few drinks, came to around fifteen dollars (US). Fifteen bucks for two hours of entertainment? Well worth it!

We went to the Karaweik Hall on our last evening in Yongon. For about 20$ (very reasonable price for Yongon) you get a massive buffer and a very nice traditional dancing show. At the entrance to the restaurant you are met by the dancers dressed in the beautiful traditional costumes and you can take photos with them. The costumes were amazing especially for the dance of the peacocks and the elephant dance. Food was good and drinks (not included in the price) were not over priced. The show started early and by 8 pm the restaurant was almost empty, most Chinese groups of tourists were there just for an hour, but we stayed till the end and enjoyed it immensely. Highly recommended. One suggestion - dress nicely, it was embarrassing to see tourists dressed like they were going hiking, show some respect!

I think this is the only place in Yangon to see a cultural show like this, with different dances, music, puppet show ,traditional costumes, performances for over 3 hours.
If you like this kind of "canned" show it is O.K. The dinner is buffet style with different choices.
I recommend to arrive with time enought to see the sunset on the Kandawgyi lake.

Don't be deceived by the dazzling glamour.
20000 kyats is simply exorbitant for substandard food and boring performances. The restaurant is enormous, with only 3 or 4 waiters running like headless chickens. Used plates piled up on each table. Food at the buffet area was not replenished fast enough and ran out due to the huge crowd of guests. Ice-cream melted and did not look so appetizing at all.
Performances were mainly Burmese traditional dances.
I would say it was the worst food we had tasted in Yangon during our 4-day visit.

The gilded Royal Barge complex is impressive and courtly BUT not a "Palace". It is misleading to call it a "Palace" as unsuspecting visitors might take it to mean a King's abode - very much in the vein of "Royal Palace" in Bangkok's context.
A convenient introduction to Burmese dining and culture, An enlightening exposure to Burmese traditional performing arts and crafts, dance and music. All under one roof. Applaudable, though not cheap.
The approach to the Royal Barge boast the spectacular facade, huge doors, 2 warriors in period costume as sentries - doubling up as 'doormen'. There are snack booths, traditionally set up, manned by Burmese maidens in native costume leading up to the sentries.
These nibbles proved quirky at first, but became addictive when one's tastebuds are more settled. The challenge is to resist gobbling too much. We were, afterall, headed for dinner.
Once passed the sentries, at the foyer, were a Thannaka powder-grinding lass and a fortune-teller waiting to cast your fate to the winds. "Register your date of birth", he said. " I will read your fortune",
Really?
What he does is to determine which day of the week the birth date falls on. He then writes on a specially designed card, the Burmese interpretation of traits, trend expectations. He also assign a Burmese name to match yours! Cool.
Beyond these interesting distractions, we spill down into the vast dining hall. To the left, was the vaudeville-like stage - though the performance later proved to be more traditional and cultural in emphasis.
The dining tables were set perpendicular to the stage - which makes for difficult viewing unless one is a crab.
The varied and extensive buffet spread were elaborately laid out. While impressive, the visual impact is negated by the displayed food getting cold in the airconditioning.
Less portions displayed with frequent replenishment would have been better.
But then, the wait staff, while attentive overall, were more inclined to watch the concert or chat among themselves than to tend to diners' needs. They ran out of cups at the drinks dispenser. I had to jolt them up from their enjoyment of the show to sheepishly suggest they abandon their entertainment and hijack some cups for me.
While my 6 travelling companions did not think much of the meal, I dined with gusto. It was a good opportunity to try out the various Burmese dishes and curries. I found the lentil dishes especially appetizing.
So, it is set. Palace it isn't. Especially when there is no Princely treatment. Nevertheless, the whole set up and concept is sheer elegance.

Friends suggested this. One was not sure it would be ok - but one really wanted to go. I was 'why not?' We knew it was 25/30$ and you're not used to paying that. There aren't expensive LOCAL things to do in Yangon - in Myanmar, in fact. Tourists get used to cheap. In London, I've paid 40£ for a theatre ticket - one I can afford!
I loved this. The food was wonderful. I LOVED the special areas, like the lady making tiny pancakes - and the mohingar was the best I've had in myanmar - really delicate - and the dessert area was SO BEAUTIFUL!
The performances blew me away. You will not see that anywhere else in Myanmar - I've been lucky enough to catch a performance at a paya, by chance, and it was WILL - but the Palace show is exceptionally fine; it's as I imagine the monarchy watched entertainment. We had a table near the back - so I shot up to the front, squatted on a step, was mesmerised throughout.
A warning - there are lots of trad kind of booths as you walk up towards the entrance at the beginning. We were a bit late, so we had to rush. ALLOW AS MUCH TIME AS YOU CAN FOR THIS BIT! I hoped to enjoy it all afterwards but most had packed away their goods and were leaving. This area represents ideas in Myanmar that are disappearing very fast. Yes, it's a kind of circus. But I like circuses and so do most people when they actually go haha!
Our unsureness about going was all down to snobbery, we agreed afterwards. We didn't want to be tourists. Haha! We ARE tourists. And the Palace experience is a brilliant, unforgettable evening out.
Thank you to everyone there!
I don't have pictures. I was too busy enjoying 😂

I've been living in Yangon for 8 months now, but hadn't been to the Karaweik Palace. So when my sister came to visit I thought it would be a good opportunity to find out what's inside the beautiful golden boat on Kandawgyi Lake!
The overall experience of attending one of the dinners here is very enjoyable. You can try little tasters of local sweets and snacks, served by staff in traditional costumes from the different regions of Myanmar. You can also have your face painted with Thaneka, find out your Burmese name, and watch a lady painting silk parasols. The inside of the palace, and the outside walkway, are beautifully decorated, and the dancing shows were impressive and fun. I particularly enjoyed the elephant dance. The staff also looked after us very well.
My only quibble is that I'd expect the buffet to be a selection of Myanmar food, whereas apart from a Monhiga station and the sweets, most of the food was bog-standard Chinese or Japanese food, with a couple of Indian dishes thrown in for good measure. It wasn't unpleasant, but it seemed to be catering for the large number of tourist groups from other Asian countries rather than trying to provide an authentic local experience. As someone who loves Myanmar food, and who can get chinese food at any beer station on any street in Yangon, it would have been nice to have a slap-up local-style meal.
So, to sum up - I'm glad I went, and I definitely enjoyed myself, but I probably wouldn't go again unless I had more friends or family visiting who wanted to see some dancing. And if they wanted to try Myanmar food, I'd take them to Padonmar, House of Memories, or Feel Myanmar instead.

My husband and I are world travelers and so we are not easily convinced that a place is great just because of the good food, or the ambiance. We make it a point to attend cultural shows in every country where they are available. We rate a place on its entirety . In this case the food was good--not anything really special. The place is gorgeous and gives you an idea of what it might have been like to be a wealthy Burmese individual centuries ago. As you enter there are lovely young ladies offering you typical treats from Myanmar. I tried most and found only one I really liked, But nothing was bad.
The dining room itself is actually two rooms that are exactly alike with identical stages. The entertainment is continuous and the dancers travel from one stage to another through the audience. The cost for the dinner and show, according to our guide, was $40 per couple which sounds about right.
The show is typical of Burmese cultural shows with beautiful costumes and good looking acrobatic dancers. It isn't any better or worse than other shows in Mandalay, Inle Lake or Bagan, So why did I rate this place 5 stars and call the show fabulous? Well, the highlight of the show is the dancing elephant. In Myanmar I've seen two men portray horses, mythical figures, even a dragon, but never an elephant until this night.
The "elephant" is almost the actual size of an elephant and it is dressed as only a Burmese elephant can be. The two men inside the costume go through a dance where the rear man at times is holding up the front one and vice versa. Considering how high the elephant stands those maneuvers were not easy to do and impressive to watch. Search on line for a video of the elephant dance.
In my opinion, this is a don't miss attraction for anyone who enjoys cultural shows, for anyone who enjoys being transported to another time and place and for anyone who enjoys dancing.

Yep! It's pricey... Like USD34 per pax... Food is not worth the price, pretty much tasteless... and the show is ok if you like fake made-for-tourist traps.
Good luck! Maybe you might have better luck than I :)

I wonder whether there been an increase in price but the website has not been updated. I emailed Karaweik Palace but I had not have any reply yet. Anyone booked on their website recently? Can you tell me how much you were charged per person?

I took Grab from point to point. Is some much cheaper.
As for the palace, I booked online which will be cheaper. You can pay at the door but please call to make reservation first.
