- Joshua HThe Hague, The Netherlands38 contributionsAmazing Church ComplexThe church itself has some good frescoes. It’s a large church so very quiet and peaceful. The complex has several pavilions worth exploring, decorative gates and a large promenade leading up to the church with its gold dome. It was recently constructed so in great condition and I would highly recommend it for the experience of being almost entirely alone! Don’t forget to explore the cafe near the gate on your way out.Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 15 September 2023
- burcuerk2012Izmir, Türkiye315 contributionsAmazing!People generally arrive by tour buses so just wait for 20~30 mins until buses leave if you want to see the place less crowded. So no need to go there very early. It is actually 10 mins away from the river and there are old houses and local restaurants on the way. It is worth walking especially for taking good photos.Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 5 October 2023
- Liege-Bastogne-LiegeZurich, Switzerland455 contributionsawe-inspiring place of prayer.Extraordinary place. Amongst many lovely churches of the Russian Orthodox faith in Tiblisi, this is by far the grandest, largest and most spectacular. I was surprised to learn that it opened only in 1995. It is sited on a hillside to the est of the city, but within easy walking distance from the centre, along the Kura River and across a rather epic new steel and glass footbridge. It is imposing from the outside - it is designed to wow and to impress - and inside it is vast, in floorspace and in height. It was busy on the afternoon of the first Friday of March, with a knot of pilgrims standing around a dais listening to prayers and a sermon being offered by one of the priests. There are scores of wonderful almost life-size icons dotted prominently around the cathedral. Seating is very limited, leaving vast swathes of floor space to wander around. It is reverential, it is a place of prayer and pilgrimage., not a tourist attraction, but has many visitors. Many of the smaller churches dotted all over central Tiblisi share the same pattern, are older and also wonderful to visit. Reverence is the key. It was a wonderful afternoon visit. I am grateful.Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 14 March 2024
- Boston1989195 contributionsGet a taxi up there, worth a lookLarge church, with outdoor terrace and great views. Free entry to get inside and there’s a small shop where you can purchase souvenirs etc. Also has a couple of coffee shops/restaurants outside. Would recommend to take sunglasses as the tiled white flooring outdoors was very bright even on an overcast day. No photos allowed inside, but they are allowed on the exterior. Also need to dress conservatively and I noticed a lot of women had their heads covered (although I entered fine without a headcover and didn’t realize until afterwards). Also, think men need to wear trousers rather than shorts.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 April 2024

- Soudamini MohapatraBengaluru, India1,438 contributionsMust visit placeHoly Trinity Cathedral of Tbilisi (Tsminda Sameba) is the biggest functional church of Georgia and the third biggest Orthodox cathedral in the world. The height of the cathedral with the central dome is 87 meters. It's a beautiful cathedral with a huge compound with the view of the mountain range. The cathedral is a Majestic structure, visible from any part of the city, especially in the night when it's lighted. It's a must visit place in Tbilisi.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 July 2024
- Marc KMunich, Germany603 contributionsDefinitely a great impressive momentActually it doesn’t hurt if you are climbing the hill towards the Cathedral. A visit inside is spectacular but women have to cover their head and men if they are on shorts have to cover their knees. All no problem a substitute is provided inside the Cathedral. The building is just impressive beautiful and the outside area is nice too.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 July 2024

Coming from Europe, it's fairly rare to see a modern cathedral, so I really enjoyed visiting here. It's a big sight, with a new modern building - inside is actually more plain than I thought it would be compared to orthodox churches. Definitely worth a visit to see the scale of this place.

The whole day tour will not be completed without visitation to this Holy Place, the Tsminda Sameba Cathedral. 👍 👍 👍 Many pilgrims perhaps visit this miraculous place yearly. 👍 We also felt the blessings spiritually upon seeing this place and the chance to see the lovely look of the inside of the cathedral. 👍 It was really a mesmerizing experience. 🙏❤️🙏

Very impressive site. The main cathedral is a huge building and the inside is very elaborate with several levels. Apparently the site was cleared specially to build this and it was paid for by a local businessman. The grounds are set out well too and it's position on top of the hill overlooking Tbilisi is impressive.

We went to this church 2 times ( day and night ) during our visit to Tbilisi, it’s very beautiful church and big compared others church’s in Tbilisi.
We’re lucky to meet a woman who bring us inside the church and show us around like a tour guide.
One thing that bothered us was the beggars in front of the doors quiet pushing and keep asked money even we already gave them 2 Gel of coins. Just say“ara” means “No” if waving your hands is not working.

I was lucky enough to visit the church at the time of the mass. Even though it was in Georgian language, it was absolutely mesmerizing. The interior is as beautiful as you expect. However, better bring your own candles and dress modestly. :)

The Holy Trinity Cathedral is the main cathedral of the Georgian Orthodox Church (1995 - 2004). It is the third tallest Eastern Orthodox cathedral and one of the largest in the world by total area. It was built to commemorate 1,500 years of autocephaly of the Georgian Orthodox Church and 2,000 years from the birth of Jesus. It really is a must see and when you go inside it is simply breathtaking. We took our time and could feel an amazing presence…..blessed.

A very impressive Cathedral that dominates the Tbilisi skyline and looks amazing when lit up at night. We enjoyed sitting on our balcony looking out over it most nights. Inside is worth a look but we found some of the older churches in Tbilisi more interesting.

Can I wear a fascinator for a wedding in
St Nikoloz Church Ortachala Tbilisi? Rather than a head scarf ?
Written 1 May 2022
You will definitely need to cover your hair, which is not done by a fascinator.

Уточните, это православная церковь, грузинского патриархата дружественная московскому? Какое расписание богослужений 25.08.19 г?

Да, это православная церковь. Расписание богослужений на конкретную дату лучше уточнить в самой церкви

I will be in Tbilisi for Easter week on March - April 2018. At what time is the Good Friday service and Easter celebration (on Saturday and Sunday) in Holy Trinity Church, Tbilisi? Thanks in advance.
Written 22 January 2018
Georgian people celebrate the Christmas and New Year in the month of January and not in December so there is a possibility that the Easter celebrations might be delayed as well. Not sure though. Better to confirm with the Cathedral authorities or website.

When you go into a Russian Orthodox church, what kind of head cover do most women wear? I know in eastern Europe many women wear a large square silk scarf folded in a triangle, tied under the chin with the point of the triangle at the back - Queen Elizabeth of England often wears scarves this way. But - do some wear other types of head cover? What about the lacy mantilla like in Spain - would Orthodox women in Georgia wear anything like that? I may go on this tour, which includes a church visit, and I also will be visiting a church service on Sunday, so I would like to wear what most women in Georgia would wear. I understand women must wear a scarf or hat in Orthodox church but want to have the best possible to fit in. I will be traveling in May, so I will not be wearing a parka with hood or any winter weather hat. Thank you.
