A Vibrant, Colourful Neighbourhood in the heart of Seoul
Prior to this trip to Korea, we have not heard of Ikseon-dong. Wife found it on social media so we decided to check out this place. We took the subway to Jongno 3-ga station and then followed GPS guidance. This is a neighbourhood of old Hanok houses in narrow alleyways. We arrived around 9.30am to 10am. There wasn't any crowd then so we had a leisurely breakfast in a beautiful bakery cafe called Onjisim. There are many interesting cafes in the area, for example one with a railway theme. We had great fun browsing and window shopping. However it gets quite hot when the sun is up. I will therefore recommend that you visit Ikseon-dong in the morning around 10am or go in the evening after 5.00pm.

    Such cozy vibes here!
Exploring Ikseondong Hanok Street was like discovering a hidden gem in the heart of Seoul. The narrow alleys lined with traditional hanok houses, now converted into cozy cafes and unique boutiques, created a charming blend of old and new. Each turn revealed something delightful, whether it was a quaint tea house or a shop filled with handmade crafts.

    Must-visit
Find the cutest coffee shops and small restaurants in this street. It is more like a small village with multiple Korean houses turned into the perfect locations for dates and coffee with friends! I always recommend people to go there at least once when they visit Seoul.

Cool place to visit while in Seoul. Lots of good restaurants and shops. Wasn’t too packed today when we went around lunchtime. Lots of tourists and locals in the area for a Monday.
We had lunch at a popular Italian restaurant, got some ice cream, some 떡 (rice cake), and a pair of ear rings.
Was surprised to see a Beavis and Butthead poster! LMAO

It is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the unique charm of this historic yet trendy neighborhood. As I wandered through the narrow lanes lined with beautifully preserved hanoks (traditional Korean houses), I was immediately captivated by the atmospher, both serene and vibrant.

What sets Ikseon-dong apart is how these age-old structures have been creatively repurposed into charming cafes, boutique shops, and artisanal studios, seamlessly blending the old with the new. The street is dotted with cozy cafes and eateries offering everything from traditional Korean dishes to contemporary fusion cuisine. I stopped by a small teahouse that served an exquisite selection of herbal teas and traditional sweets.

Always fun to hang out in Ikseon-dong. Usually crowded streets with locals and tourists from everywhere. Lots of cafes, pubs, souvenir shops, traditional Korean restaurants and BBQ spots.
When I’m in Seoul, I usually stop by for drinks, shopping, or try out a nice restaurant.
We were there last Thursday afternoon for drinks and Sunday afternoon after visiting Jongmyo (종묘).

A small Hanok Village located near Insadong. The vibes are great with beautiful cafes popping up along the old Hanok houses, serving Korean foods, yummy bakeries and desserts. Very instagrammable and beautiful place to spend half a day in.

Bukchon village is located on a hill with steep streets at some areas while Ikseon-dong is on flat land. There are many shops that sell souvenirs, some cafes and street vendors here. There are some Instagram worthy gems hidden among the streets. Do wander around. There is also a place to get a fortune cookie somewhere in there. It was interesting to see the locals getting the cookies.

Ikseon-Dong, just a short walk over from Insa-dong has its charm. This tiny traditional area is full of charm. Tiny alleys lead to hidden gems - colorful souvenir shops, themed cafes, tea houses and restaurants. There are clothes shops too. If you are a photography enthusiast there are many spaces and interior-exterior design spaces waiting to be captured. You will be walking around with a smile, but beware this place is so crowded. When I visited it seemed like half of Korea was there. I didn’t mind too much, other than there were line ups for cafes and restaurants. I will go back again and try to get there before lunch time.

We took a leisurely walk from our hotel near Euljiro 3-ga to Ikseon-dong Hanok Street. It is relatively easy to locate. You can use NaverMap to guide you there as google map doesn’t work well in South Korea. Loads of instagram worthy spots and cafes. There is a nice little hotteok stall near Seine Dessert. Seine Dessert is another cute little cafe with pretty desserts and nice and different European themed interior on each floor. Apart from Hotteok, we tried the pancake at Flipper’s. How was the pancake? Good, but i still prefer Pauline Pancake. Apart from Cafes, there are also bakeries and shops that sells hats, accessories and flowers. You can spend some good 2 hours in this area.
