Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.

From the minute we stepped into the Arrivals area at Cairo airport to stepping into the Departures area 10 days later were looked after with care and friendliness and with great efficiency. Any queries we had were quickly dealt with, (thank you Ahmed) and we couldn’t fault anything.
Both our guides in Cairo and on our Dahabiya (Mohammeds) were excellent, so full of knowledge and able to bring 4000 years of history alive for us.
The 4 days on Dahabiya Orient was magical - comfortable, relaxing with a fantastic crew who looked after the 6 of us so well and made us really welcome.
The two downsides were our lovely hotel in Cairo, Le Riad Charme, full of character and with excellent staff, but was opposite a very noisy cafe which played loud music till 2 am!
And in Luxor where, for some reason, our itinerary was compacted into 1 day rather than a day and a half, which was very tiring as we had left our Cairo hotel at 3:30 am, but our hotel Al Moudira was fabulous and we were able to totally relax and enjoy the surroundings after a long hot day.
Thank you Encounters Travel for helping to make our wonderful trip to Egypt so good.

Absolutely incredible trip to Cairo and Luxor with Encounters travel and Lady Egypt. Everything was organised to perfection from the minute I landed. The guides Mustafa and Tayeb were brilliant - so informative and highly entertaining and also great personal photographers. All the staff were so helpful and went above and beyond. And I felt safe and cared for at all times. I had such a wonderful and memorable trip and would love to return again some day soon.

We loved the tour. Our guide Adham was excellent, he was funny, kind, very knowledgeable and was taking good care of us regarding our needs (water, rest breaks, even pictures!) and safety. I would choose Adham all over again to be our guide! Every detail of the tour was smooth and right on time. Our time in each monument was good enough for the explanation, sightseeing and the pictures. Can’t thank enough all the people involved in this experience, drivers, guides and logistics coordinators.

This was a solo trip for me and it started in Jordan with my guide, Omar Almansi. Omar had such an amazing presence and spirit and I knew it was going to be as amazing as I was dreaming. Little Petra, Petra, camping in Wadi Rum… it was all incredible. Omar knew the significance of people seeing such incredible sites and his guiding did not disappoint! My trip then went in to Egypt. WOW. It’s hard to find the words. The pyramids, tombs, temples, Abu Simbel, all of it was unreal. My guide there, Ayman Kenawy, was unbelievable. His vast knowledge was inspiring but his way of navigating and making the trip memorable for everyone he guided was his true gift! As a solo female traveler people worry about me but I never felt worried at all. Both Omar and Ayman looked out for me and made me feel so welcome. They never steered me wrong. Cairo was much busier than Amman so I was grateful for all the extra effort that made my trip so easy I could focus on the magic all around me. This was a very deep and profound journey for me and it exceeded my expectations.

This trip was an adventure for sure! Visiting Jordan was amazing; however, when we got to Egypt it was a more stressful experience. Beware the extra charges for tours where they want dollars instead of pounds. Also, they rush you through places and limited time to shop for souvenirs. If you see something you want, get it because there won’t be another chance. The tour guides were knowledgeable and helpful. Omar, our guide in Jordan was amazing! Petra is a must see, camel rides in the desert a must do, a donkey ride up to the monastery a must, and sleeping on the outdoor sailboat on the Nile was so fun! I also enjoyed a swim in the Dead Sea! I’d advise you to be ready to walk a lot and get little sleep. This is a once in a lifetime trip. They change the itinerary on you a bit in Egypt so it’s hard to know what you’re doing and then they charge you extra. That’s why I gave a 4 star. Hotels are not great but comfortable.

Couldn’t recommend Enocunters Travel any more highly. We traveled all over Jordan and Egypt and it was seamless. From booking through departure it was a wonderful experience. Our tours guides Yassar and Ayman were professional, knowledgeable and beyond helpful. Our drivers, especially Mohannad in Jordan, but honestly all of them, were safe, considerate and enthusiastic. We saw so many things and made memories to last a life time. Everyone was so tolerant of our crazy amounts of luggage (wasn’t our only trip) and even though we took trains and boats, it wasn’t too much of an issue. I feel like we learned so much that I could teach a class of Egyptian history at this point!

We did the Jordan & Egypt Express tour.
The Jordan part was very nice, smooth organisation, no issues faced, all good and clear since day 1. This trip exceeded our expectations. In Egypt the situation was different. Poor choice of hotels. Some parts of the tour were rushed (pyramids visit). LONG BUS Driving. We were not fully aware of how long and difficult the drive from Cairo to Luxor would have been. The your describes this part in a very sneaky way. The truth: Bumpy roads, thousands of check points, a drive that was supposed to be 8/9 hours it became 12. With only 2 stops in between. This was an insanely tiring trip. In fact, me and my husband decided to book a flight to come back to Cairo. We wished the company would have offered other options since the beginning of the trip (like train or flight). This driving translates into almost one day and an half of the trip just sitting on the bus.
Also, we did not appreciate the company offers adds-on / optional visits for 300% more of the average cost. I understand the travel agency needs to take a percentage, but 3 times more is ridiculous. We paid for 2 optional visits right when we arrived in the hotel, as we did not have an idea of the real costs. Then we realised that these were overpriced and for this reason other members of the tour hired external guides to do the same activities. We did the same for last few activities, but we felt this is not how it should be, especially because at the beginning the CEO discouraged us to use alternative guides/tours. I thought this was a genuine advice. Now I know I will not trust them anymore.

I want to start by saying it wasn't bad by any means, we got what we payed for, it was far easier than organising the same travel without a tour would have been.
BUT! to begin, Encounters Travel do not provide this tour, they on-sold my partner and I to a local guide, so we joined 5 other couples/families/groups of friends... who were on five different tours from five different countries. so despite the itinerary looking at first glance as though there was a lot of room for down time, flexibility, some self guided-touring it turns out those gaps are built in to fit in the extra bits-and-pieces from other peoples tours. So on day 5 we all traipsed off to look at Fine Leather GoodsTM because it was in Dave and Susans tour program, and on Day 4 we all had to look at carpets (one couple was frog-marched to the exit when they asked to see the cheap carpets) and sorry everyone, 'wine-tasting' was in our itinerary, so we all need to go drink warm fruit wine now, no time for the pool!
there was a lot of power walking through ancient sites so we could get to the truck-stop lunch-shop first, beating the other buses was the number one aim of our otherwise lovely guide, by the end of the week I would have traded my left tit to have one nice lunch, with a menu I was allowed to sit and peruse for 10 minutes, and no truck fumes in sight!
as well as opinions about the correct speed at which to see the sites, our guide had a lot of opinions to share about which sites were worth seeing, (if you take this tour and your guide tells you Cleopatra's pool is too hot and too full of Russians then hey! I think we have the same guide, and you can tell him from me that the water is lovely, and even with the crowds you can swim in peace and stand on ancient marble) and which shops were worth going to (mall of Istanbul is apparently Also full of Russians)
Like I said, it wasn't bad, the hotels were well chosen, the buffet breakfasts and dinners were extensive and impressive (ALTHOUGH, if you are fussy, autistic, or have a lot of allergies you will find the food situation DIFFICULT! because it's all limited menu truck stops and hotel buffets you may struggle to find anything familiar or that you actually want, pack snacks for the bus and it will matter less) and Curly the bus driver got us everywhere safely and on time

My wife and I did a tour with Encounters Travel in July 2023.
We had an amazing experience.
Our tour Guide - Ayman Kenawy - was very knowledgeable. He did his best to explain and share history, culture and customs of the area.
We could not have enjoyed our tour without Ayman.

Hello , we plan to do the encounters travel 10 day tour in October and want to inquire about bringing our 16 month old. She has travelled with us many times and from raising desert temps to cold temps. She is able to walk and we plan to bring a carrier so she can keep up with the group. What do you think?

I don’t think they allow little ones on a Small Group tour but I’m not certain about that. Encounters run Family and Private Tours that may be a better option but I would definitely check with Ant or Marisa in the UK office before booking. They were both very helpful when I was setting up my vacation with them. I would suggest for you to Call the toll free number on their website.

Hi,
We are a family of 4- 2 adults and 2 kids- ages 11 & 13. We are planning on visiting Egypt for winter break from Dec 22/23 to Jan 5/6. We would be interested in using a local agent to visit the sites and get a feel for the country. Please let us know if you would be interested. If so, do provide us with info on your tours.
Thanks,
Preeti

Hi Preeti, and Hi and thanks also to you Janet for the great referral!
We would be delighted to help your family with a trip to Egypt. We have some dedicated group family tours that have been designed to be ideal for families with children around the same age as yours, or you could join one of our other group tours (though we don’t get many children on those). A final option is for us to arrange a completely private customised trip for your family – this tends to be a little more expensive, but not that much.
We don’t have our guide rostas finalised for December yet, but Big Mo will definitely be leading one of our group trips.
If you’d like to drop us an email to then we can start the ball rolling and send you some suggested itineraries and options? Unfortunately TripAdvisor doesnt allow us to include a website address or email address here but you can easily find the info on the contact us page on our website.

Can you tell what the 3 day cruise boat on The Nile was like(size, etc.). I like the idea of 1 day Felucca but 3 days instead of 1 day driving is tempting. Thanks. Yvonne

Toronto, Canada213 contributions
Hi Yvonne,
Thanks for your interest in our tours to Egypt, we hope you decide to join us!
We’ve actually just changed the way in which we offer upgrades from the Felucca and moving forward we’ll no longer be offering the 3-night cruise upgrade option - instead we’ll be offering the option of spending an additional night in Aswan (at the hotel) as an alternate to the Felucca. The Felucca is an amazing experience though which we highly recommend and I’m sure you’ll have a great time whilst on board. The Felucca allows you to get much closer to traditional Egyptian life along the banks of the Nile and the crew will normally make a small bonfire in the evening which is pretty fun.
If you did want to consider a tour which includes time on board one of the larger Nile Cruise boats then you could consider our Gods of Egypt or Egyptian Legacy tours, both of which feature a 4-night Nile Cruise between Luxor and Aswan.
I hope that this information is helpful. If you’d like any assistance with any of our tours feel free to contact our reservations team

Hi there,
I’m afraid that we don’t have vehicles available in Egypt that would accommodate a mobility scooter. Also many of the sites we visit include lots of steps and rough ground. I’m very sorry then, but I think this tour isn’t really suitable.

Hey Kevin, I took this tour in December and my group had 17 people. It was a good size with everyone being American except for 4 people from the U.K. Ages ranged from early 20's to the oldest probably in her early 60's. It was nice having a big enough group that you get to know a new person every day but not so big where it didn't feel personal. I also had Waleed as my guide and can't speak highly enough. It would probably be worth it to work your days around his schedule though I'm sure all the encounters guides are great. As Annie said I would also probably contribute the majority younger age demographic to the affordability but this tour is also quite physical as far as being able to walk and stand for long periods of time as well as take many steep steps to visit the sights. You would certainly have to be mobile to enjoy it.

We are considering purchasing the living social deal for the 22 day South Africa tour. My husband is concerned the trip will be too vigorous for him- he is 73 and is slowing down as he get older- if a walk seems to far is he free to skip it? He also wants to know about the tents are they truly easy to set up AND pack back in their bags. We did a similar tour about 8 years ago could always set up camp without assistance but the heavy canvas tents were hard to get back in the bag!!!!
I understand that you require trip insurance for medical- how much would the policy be for a 58 yo female and a 73 yo male- just an estimate please.
Danniell S
Toronto, Canada213 contributions
Hi Kate,
You do need to be relatively fit to do this tour. There are lots of long drives, and the steps in and out of the truck are quite high, so you need to be quite mobile. If you're used to camping then that's fine - the tents are not too heavy and quite easy to put away. The crew would also be happy to provide some assistance with the tents if you had difficulty. You may like to consider our 'accommodated' version of the same though (see our Grand Southern Safari). This follows an almost identical route, still using the same style vehicle and eating most meals around the truck, but there are only max 18 people in the group (instead of max 24), and you stay in hotels, lodges and guesthouses instead of camping. It is more expensive yes, but still really good value compared to a standard safari holiday.
Thanks

Hi there,
Very much interested in travelling to Egypt as a single female ( my friends are all to scared to go) . I have to say the recent killing of Mexican tourists by a military helicopter (mistaken for ISIS) has made me question the likelihood that areas announced as 'safe for tourists' are actually safe?. Is the Western Desert a place that Encouters Travel currently or previously conducts tours?
Thanks and sorry for the awkward question :/
Danniell S
Toronto, Canada213 contributions
Hi Lola,
I understand your concerns completely! It is better to ask questions now and to make sure you are comfortable before you book anything. Firstly I would like to say we are a British registered company and abide by British Travel regulations. We have in the past (pre 2011) run tours to the western desert without issue however almost immediately after the 2011 revolution a travel warning was put in-place for the western desert by the British Foreign office. This warning has remained and we have not and will not run tours to the desert until this is lifted. all of our tours now keep to the Nile valley region, between Alexandria in the North and Abu Simbel in the south and across to Hurghada on the Red Sea. The British Foreign Office has considered this area safe for tourists for quite some time now and we have run tours twice a week for over a year now. You can see reviews from recent travellers both here on trip advisor and on our site we have another link to Feefo who also have reviews.
I hope this helps but if you have any further question you can get us on our instant chat on our website or hit the contact us tab.
Many thanks
Dan
My boyfriend and I are preparing to take the 9 dayNubian Adventure with Encounters and although we are very excited our families are very nervous, so I'm wondering how experiences have been in terms of "safeness"?
Ralph F

Hi, thanks for your message.
There are quite a few recent reviews on our TripAdvisor page of this exact Egypt tour as its proving pretty popular this year. I think your parents will find some helpful and reassuring comments from travellers there about their experiences with us in Egypt, and about how safe they felt.
While there are certain parts of Egypt that we aren't visiting at the moment because of safety concerns (the Sinai Peninsular, and Western Deserts), Cairo and the Nile Valley are fine to visit. Neith the UK Foreign Office and US State Department advise against visiting any of the places you'll be going to.
You'll find the Egyptian people very welcoming, and you'll see a significant tourist police presence as you travel around - they are there specifically for your protection and safety.
You can read a lot more about how we manage our trips in Egypt in relation to our travellers safety on our website - follow the link to 'More information on current travel to Egypt...' on the Egypt page on our website (I'm afraid I'm not able to post a direct link to it here).
I hope this is helpful. If you or your parents would like to speak to us in person about this, please feel free to call anytime.
best wishes, Ralph Foulds
