Fort Jesus is Mombasa’s most popular tourist attraction. The fort, located along the coastline near the Old Town, is a monumental piece of architecture that was built in the 16th century by the Portuguese. The fort has a museum that displays various artifacts from the era where Mombasa served as a transit point for the slave trade and commodities, and which enjoyed regular visits by seafarers and the like.

Fort Jesus is a place rich with history. Do yourselves a favor and allow at least 2 hours to visit and learn about the history of the fort and the area. It's well worth it. Unfortunately we only had about 40 minutes here and it just wasn't enough.

You can only visit with a guide which I normally don't like but it was brilliant the guides seem to really enjoy their jobs. The full tour does take quite some time and it is very hot. Go early.

It was our first time to visit the place and we enjoyed the whole tour....the tour guide took us down the memory lane....how the Portuguese came and built the place...the Arabs took over....the British.....each with their own architectural designs left behind. It's amazing. The tour guide called Musa Magambo was particularly very helpful. He went an extra mile to take... More

This is a must-visit place in Mombasa for everybody who wants to learn about the history. However, the exhibition and museum are not very extensive nor impressive. Outside the building, local guides offer their services. They surely offer some interesting insights, but also totally rip tourists off - as does the souvenir shop inside. The exhibition could certainly be more... More
