We made a tour in mombasa old town with a guide recommended by jafar +254710239929 who we met him at fort jesus after dropped 9ff from diani.
He showed us around and gave us the history of the old town.we also visited the spice market which was very crowded.
Note:take care of your belongings in the market.
This is a must to do but its better during the afternoon its less crowded as many locals are at the mosque.for anyhelp contact jafar +254710239929

Walking through the streets with garbage littered everywhere, people trying desperately to sell their trinkets and the stench of sewer was not the image conjured of colonial splendour that once was.

We had a great guide Marcus +254727751792 who took us round and was recommended by maxi Sally +254726382358 (who wasn't available). We didn't want a full 4 hour tour for 30 dollars per person which seems to be advertised a lot. Marcus was able to take us round the old town streets and tell us about the history and way of life today for an hour (we asked for an hour for 2000 shillings). We usually don't want a guide when we are traveling and prefer to wander the streets of places we are visiting but because we kept hearing and reading that it was unsafe we called around for a guide and got a good experience because of it. Thanks Marcus!

I travelled to Mombasa with my girlfriend from Nairobi and it was my first time but through LBE tours I managed to have a wonderful time getting a tour around Fort Jesus, The Hindu Temple, Elephant Tusks and through the narrow streets of old town Mombasa where we got to indulge in the Swahili cuisine in the best restaurants at a great price. I experienced the city in a whole new light and the tour company was affordable and genuinely hospitable. I'd recommend LBE tours to anyone and this is their contact:+254710239929. They have very knowledgeable guides who are well spoken and hospitable.

I was a bit apprehensive about visiting as I remembered reading about some of the violent crime that plagued the area in the mid-2010’s. I went anyway and it felt no different than elsewhere in Mombasa. (I would not go alone, however, as I was the only noticeable foreigner during my visit and understandably attracted some attention.) Fort Jesus is absolutely incredible and, despite the disorganized nature of the museum inside, should not be missed. Many of the historic buildings are in a state of serious disrepair but I would still recommend hiring a local guide to scope them out.

nice old town, worth a stroll if you’re there. but not worth travelling to. guides are way too expensive and so is the entrance to fort jesus.

Hello! I was wondering where you find a guide for old town that is reasonably priced (I've seen posts that claim they had a guide for under 2000 KES), a lot of the tour operators that I am looking at online are charging upwards of 150 USD for a half day trip to fort jesus and old town.
Thank you!

I’m so sorry for not responding- I seem to have missed the notification. For the benefit of other travellers though, I will still respond. You might have found differently but your guides are literally everywhere but lookout for some sort of identification. They are particularly friendly and they are so passionate about their job! They usually are in front of the sites such as fort Jesus, and they can walk you through both Old and New town Mombasa, and even take pics of you in between ;) anything from KES1000 and up but I thought it was worth it.
