We enjoyed viewing the flowers as they are blooming and the calm clear waters of the lake. Not crowded during our weekend visit. Over 8,000 different tropical and subtropical plants and flowers. Lots of trails for walking and hiking.

When we visited in April, the tulips were in full bloom. The botanical garden was very accessible by train and though it was drizzling during our visit, we enjoyed walking around the park wearing raincoats and using our umbrellas. Did get a little chill from the rain, but nothing serious. Looking at the many varieties of colourful tulips really made our visit memorable.

Excellent time of the year for seeing beautiful flowers in bloom. The scent in the air throughout this large park is energizing.

Tulip in full bloom. That is the only best part. This place is full of uncouth loud people who invade your personal space.

I had the misfortune to visit it during the weekend. I took bus number 630 (if you live in the north of Beijing). Very crowded. The bus trip took more then 2 hours, and by the time we were getting closer, the traffic was getting crazier and crazier. I have never seen so many people going in one direction in years. All of them were heading to Botanical Garden or Flagrant Hills.
So, pay attention, no weekends or holidays!
The botanical garden itself is magnificent and worth visiting. You'd better pay the full ticket (45RMB) that gives you access to most of the attractions, like Tropical Conservatory or The temple of sleeping Buddha.
Prepare yourself for a 3 hours walk, there are a lot of sites to see, and a lot of pictures to take. Of course, I would have been happier if the Chinese kids would have given up saying HELLO to each foreigner they see. But this is it.
Not to many Europeans visiting.. 2.

Too often people visit Beijing and see the Forbidden City and Great Wall, however the two jewels of Beijing are really the Summer Palace and the Beijing Botanical Gardens!
The Beijing Botanical Garden was established in 1955. It covers a large area of 564,000 square metres. The gardens include a dozen exhibition districts and halls, such as the tree garden, a perennial bulb garden, a rose garden, a peony garden, a traditional Chinese medical herb garden, a wild fruit resources district, an environment protection plant district, a water and vine plant district, an endangered plant district, and exhibition greenhouses for tropical and subtropical plants. There are several Buddhist temples located within the botanic gardens.
The gardens cultivate 6,000 species of plant, including 2,000 kinds of trees and bushes, 1,620 varieties of tropical and subtropical plants, 500 species of flowers and 1,900 kinds of fruit trees, water plants, traditional Chinese.
The hothouse exhibition is the highlight of the gardens.
The first room is filled with evergreens and members of the palm family.
The second room is given over to tropical aquatic plants, including water lilies and flowering taros.
The third room displays commercial plants and their breeding and propagation. Here there are specimens of the triple-leaved rubber plant, cocoa and coffee trees and the sugar producing sweet-leaved chrysanthemum which has been introduced into China from abroad.
There are rooms for demonstrating medicinal plants, aromatic plants and succulents. The exhibition of ornamental plants is spectacular with its countless varieties if flowers and grasses. There are over 300 different varieties of orchid, among them a rootless one that relies on fine hairs to absorb water vapor and nutrients from the air.

Besides the hothouse, there is also a national plant specimen hall with a floor space of 11,000 square meters. Specimen houses, plant classification laboratories, research rooms and a lecture hall are arranged around a courtyard linked by arches and trellises.
The Peony Garden was open to the public in 1981. It covers an area of 100,000 square metres and is divided into three sections. The Peony Grove is the most important, covering an area of 35,000 square metres.
The plant collection includes many rare species. There is, for example, the metasequoia first discovered in the region of Hubei and Sichuan by a Chinese scientist in the 1940s. Since it was originally believed that it had become extinct during the Paleogene Period (66 million years ago), the discovery of living specimens in China came as a tremendous surprise to botanists.
Other plants in the gardens include Nepenthes pitcher plants, which are carnivorous plants; the golden butterfly orchid with its lustrous yellow flowers; the American redwood; the Japanese blossoming cherry, and the famous "bodi tree", the tree under which Buddha sat when he gained enlightenment.
There is much to do, even special fun activities for the children!

I'm glad I made the 2.5 hour trip from east to west Beijing to see the gardens. I chose a good time to go as the peach trees were mostly in full bloom although a cold wind was blowing all day and it snowed at one point. There didn't seem to be much else besides these trees as landscaping is minimal. It's more like a park than a botanical garden. Judging from other reviews at other times of year, you should visit only when you know something is in bloom or be disappointed. The glasshouse costs extra (and more than the entrance fee) at 50 yuan.

Even on the weekday there are a lot of schools that organize field trips here.
There is a wide variety of stuff to see. Definitely a nice quiet place to sit down.
I was kind of shocked on how Mcdonalds found there way in there. I went there twice and there was a Mcdonalds delivery person in there selling a meal set for 30 rmb.
Anyways, this isn't really a necessity to come see while your in Beijing unless you are looking for a place to relax and take your kids.
There is a temple at the very back north end.
Summary:
Don't come during the weekends it's too crowded.
Bathrooms-squatters kind of had a funny smell when I went both times
You have to pay another free to get into the green house so just buy the through ticket if you want to see everything.

I was worried about crowds after reading all the reviews. But I went on a Wednesday in June and had the place to myself all day. There were more workers than tourists. The only other foreigner I saw entered at 3:30 when I was leaving.
Take subway line 4to Beigongmen, exit A, both buses 331 and 563 from here for 13 stops to Beijing Zhiwuyuan Namen. This is about a 1/2 hour ride.
This enters the Garden at the southeast gate. Basic entry 10 rmb, can buy combo ticket of 50 rmb for entry into Conservatory and Wofu Temple. I got the combo and enjoyed the Conservatory. If you have never been to another temple you may enjoy it, it's small. I did like the turtle rafts.
I did not like that many destinations are not listed on the Garden map(you can get a free map in the tourist office just past the entry. The Bee museum and butterfly house are both not listed. Bee museum is free between the Magnolia garden and the Mei flower garden. The Butterfly house is 10 rmb and is across from the Penjing Garden.
I wish I had more time to explore as there was a sign that said "mountain village" when walking from Wofu temple toward the arborium. It was too hot to eat, but drinks were reasonably priced.

We decided to head to the Botanical Markets after a couple of action packed days in Beijing. We took a taxi from the middle of the city, took an hour and only cost 105 RMB. Got there around 8am and very few people there. The gardens are nice, but run down. It's was very peaceful though and the lakes in the middle are lovely. We walked to the temple at the back- make sure you go! The gardens around it are great and the temple is beautiful with all the states of Buddha and reclining Buddha at the back. Half the reason we enjoyed it was because it was so quiet and you could enjoy the temple in peace :) much needed after all the hustle hustle and crowds at forbidden city, summer palace, etc. we also enjoyed a tea ceremony in the temple which was where one of the empowers visited! The workers at the tea house did not speak English so we had fun using the translator app- were were also the only people in the tea house.
Would recommend for nature lovers if you have an extra day in Beijing and need to get away a from the crowds. And also to enjoy a beautiful temple that isn't sprawling with people!
We then took a taxi to the antique Market and cost only 115 RMB.

Is the Bee Museum at the Garden still open?
Written 22 January 2019
I don’t think so. There was perhaps a building near the bonsai collection that had housed a bee museum. But perhaps we missed it entirely. Sorry I cannot be more certain.
