Some of the trees and plants, and the rock formations, are very exotic and in a nice way, unusual. For the palace inhabitants it was probably a peaceful and tranquil haven. During my visit, it was loaded with sightseers and a little noisy. It was also a hot 37C, so I bought myself a mango drink in a Palace Shop.

After visiting the Forbidden City this should be your next stop. It is set in a beautiful garden that has a long history. The garden is beautifully laid out and has many sections to it.
It is a treat to climb to the top of the hill and have a view of the entire Forbidden City. It is quite a steep climb but very well worth it.

It was a beautiful Chinese-styled garden. Smaller than what I expected, but it’s a very nice place to stroll and relax in (if you can ignore the crowd).

- we did the garden upon walking out of the Forbidden City
- the garden itself was pleasant, but honestly, somewhat over-rated
- its a pretty long & steep climb up to the pagoda, the rest of the garden is pretty ordinary
- only good thing is the fee is very minimal and doesn't take much time
- there's a tea shop inside and they do a demo for Chinese tea, that was quite entertaining (RMB 50)
- overall, if you are tired after waling many hours through the Forbidden City, this is one you can afford to avoid (the Summer Palace & Temple of Heaven are better attractions)

It is the only exit of the Forbidden City. Quite a disappointment judged by its name. Small and always filled with tourists since all the visiting routes end here.
My suggestion is lower your expectation for this garden and spend more time on other parts of the Forbidden City if possible.

It is supposed to be a sacred place for the emperors with in the forbidden city. By the time you reach there from the entrance at the southern gate you are all tired but this garden gives you some peace and relaxation but crowded with tourists.

Such a lovely garden and so beautifully designed ...... note the rocks and the unusual trees, with gnarled barks! One can imagine legends being created around these...

I wouldn't want to visit here on a rainy day as this section of the Forbidden City is exclusively outside (aside from a few gazebos).
This place was very beautiful and boasts trees that are hundreds of years old. If you paid for the audio guide you'll hear lots of stories about how the Emperor chose his concubines and the Empress writing poems along the same paths you're walking on.

These gardens are beautiful and can be so peaceful and tranquil when you enter. The key as with the Forbidden City is to go later in the morning. The main crowds and tours are there 1st thing in the morning so by 11-12 the place is not as crowded and you can enjoy it more. The gardens have beautiful trees and rock formations and are very pleasant to stroll leisurely around. Take your time and enjoy. A must while in the Forbidden City
