This magnificent creation of the Chinese people is a must-see. We were at a site near Beijing. Badaling was busy, so we returned to a site closer to the city. My 9 year old child really liked it. It took an hour to go up, an hour to go down. We've had enough impressions!

It is definitely worth a visit if you're staying in Beijing. Our lonely planet guide indicated a place from a metro station to get the 919 bus that brings you directly to the Badaling secrion of the Wall so we followed its indications. The price was quite low dpfor the hour-long trip. But on the way, there's a real tourist trap. We stopped at a pole where a blue sticker (that looked quite official) indicated Bus 919. We waited 30 minutes, and no bus. That's when a man in an official uniform told us that it was best to grab a taxi, because the bus would never come. He claimed that the service had stopped. He started to organize a taxi for us and the other tourists beside us, which woukd have cost us a good 40$ per couple. We declined his offer and kept walking further down the street where the flow of people were going and that's where we found minimum 10 buses 919 going to Badaling; we were furious! In January, it was very windy and cold. Not too many tourists and magical. When we came back to the metro station after our Great Wall tour, the sticker was gone, the taxis were gone as well as the man in uniform. Don't fall in the tourist trap!

I really this place because it is easy to visit and such an amazing place. This place can travel by train which is very easy. Also, it has cable car so, this was very easy for first step to climb up.

As you would expect the Great Wall is very Impressive where ever you see it, this location, best way up is the chairlift, it is not wheelchair friendly at the top and the climb is very steep, you will need a moderate level of fitness, weekends are very crowded you would need to be there early, best time is during the week

Went here with a tour company called Botrip as they do a tour that allows you to restore part of the Badging wall. I've visited both Mutianyu and Badaling and both have different aspects that I like. I felt like I got better, authentic photos at Badaling and it was not as busy with tourists. The restoration experience was amazing and you felt part of something special knowing that part of your effort has gone in to keeping the wall alive!

had the wall to ourselves pretty much, and it was SPECTACULAR! Really was a highlight, if you have the opportunity I highly recommend skipping the touristy sections and to come here.

This section of the great wall is less frequented by tourists especially in the off season, like Winter. There are no cool rides or slides, or cable cars but this segment of the wall feels a little more raw. On Christmas Day 2015 I walked for hours hours without seeing anyone. It was a tough hike but I stopped a lot for photos. I would recommend taking a bus and taxi or private car if you can to get to this section rather than taking a Badaling Wall tour and ending up with holiday photos full of strangers.

This part of the Great Wall is a must see! There aren't throngs of people squeezing through. When I was there it was just a handful of people. You could even snap a pic of the Great Wall as if there weren't tourists present at all. This part of the wall isn't restored like the main spot at Badaling or Mutianyu and it's probably a shorter hike... Roughly about 4.5-5 km to the point where the wall is barricaded for safety reasons. Thumbs up!

We arrived by coach, a short walk from the entrance to the wall, and had a group photograph taken ( Viking Cruises) with the wall behind us . Our guide advised us that there were two options - the easy route or the more difficult one.
We chose the more challenging one , as did most of our group, and loved every minute of it - even the souvenir sellers and craftsmen engraving pieces of slate with images of the stunning scenery, to sell to the numerous tourists.
There were some very steep sections and the steps were sometimes of irregular height and width , which made it hard to get into a rhythm and also hard on the knees, but what an experience !!
We walked until we reached a dead end and , with a sense of real achievement, we then turned around and walked back through the ever increasing throng of friendly Chinese tourists who , as ever, seemed fascinated by European tourists and ,on a couple of occasions, stopped me to ask if they could have a photograph taken with me.
Some of the downhill section , during our return, was quite steep and the irregular steps did make the snaking descent a little precarious, but this did not deter us from going straight onto the easier section as we wanted to savour every minute of the experience.
Taking an excursion with Viking did make this visit very easy for us , as everything was arranged for us and all that we had to do was walk and enjoy it. Our group ranged in age from 25 to 70+ and all ( including a valiant lady with a walking stick) managed to enjoy at least a section or two of the wall. We all enjoyed the experience and my only criticism would be that we would have loved to have spent a couple of hours more there.

Reviewing the Great Wall climb at Badaling, one of the closest sections to Beijing.
Great for the time challenged, since it took us an hour and a half to drive in from Beijing.
Very well maintained, clean and well presented.
There are 2 choices to climb up, by cable car and the walk. Each method leads to different sections of the wall. Our guide suggested that we walk up as that would ironically involve less climbing. We heard how hard some sections could be, and put our trust in the guide.
The climb turned out to be quite tolerable. We were helped by the weather which turend out to be a cool 21 degrees C down from about 35 the day before. If felt like someone turned on the aircon at the Great Wall.
We saw the crowds turning right on the wall, towards the cable car point, so we turned left which was much quieter. The crowds thinned out after 2 watch towers and we were left with an 85 year old chinese woman, who seemed very comfortable climbing up, being helped by her grand daughter. i could not complain after that. Made it past 4 towers, and then turned back.
Spent a lot of time at each watch tower taking in the stunning verdant views. Happy to report, no urine smell anywhere, unlike earlier reports on this site..
Pleasant morning, and it was quaint to receive a lot of attention from country Chinese tourists who had never seen a foreigner before. We posed for their photos , held their babies, and even lent our kids for their photos , all in good humour!
Shopping on the way back for souvenirs was productive, with bargaining down 60% off the asking price. Lunch at a Chinese fast food restaurant near the parking lot , was interesting to say the least!
