Came across this on an evening walk. One end of the artsy street is a block away from the JW Marriott Beijing Central Hotel. Lots of nice paintings are offered for sale, many seem to be very reasonably priced.

A quaint street which was part of our self guided walk through old Beijing. It has lots of painting and calligraphy stores. You can also have Chinese stone stamps made here. Keep on walking and you’ll walk through a Hutong area to see how locals live. Worth a stroll!

Charming Liulichang is often bypassed these days by tourists who are drawn to the hipster dazzle of Nanluoguxiang, the old hutong neighborhood that has been renovated and gentrified, and it does have its charms! But Liulichang stands in its faded glory as the place to go to catch a glimpse of an earlier time. This street,which snakes down both sides of a major road (Take the overpass from one side the other) is chockablock with shops selling calligraphy brushes, art supplies, ink stones, etc. This was once the hub of art and calligraphy in China and if you are an artist, you will love looking here, and perhaps buying some ornate beaded handle brushes, special papers, and ink blocks in shapes like storks, crowns, and Chinese symbols. The other shops offer lovely crafts, many of them recreations of old Chinese robes and accessories. Tea shops will provide tastings and the opportunity to by delicacies such as courtesan tea. Very fragrant and special. The antiques may be reproductions, but they are lovely, and are increasingly hard to find elsewhere in modern, bustling Beijing. One caveat: keep your valuables safe. Violent crime is nearly unheard of, but there are pickpockets. Cell phone are a prime target. That said, this street, with it old style buildings and overhanging roofs, is worth a look. there are some wonderful older restaurants at the entrance. Chances are, most days, the street will be uncrowded, a welcome relief if touring at the height of the season!

A quiet street, great for a stroll and avoiding the crowded, touristy areas. You can find 文房四宝 (Four Treasures of the Study) here. They are mainly referring to brush, ink, paper and inkstone.
It is also near to DaShiLan so you can add this place to your itinerary (LiuLiChang -> DaShiLan -> QianMen DaJie) as it doesn’t take much time to visit (~1 hour).

I stumbled on this street while trying to get back from Sogo to my hostel. I ended up buying a bunch of copied watercoloured paintings by a woman’s husband. The small ones were 25 RMB and the bigger ones were 50 RMB. She spoke enough english for me to understand. Total spent was 350 RMB, but they had meaning to me since I visited them! Highly recommend visiting her shop. Unfortunately, I dont know the address but see picture attached. Overall, a beautiful street to visit, very local.

This is a pretty little street split in two by a major road. You can get to both sides by a foot bridge. It appears to go in to neighborhoods on each side. Fun area to explore and shop.
When it came to negotiating, they all start high. I found that they cringe when you try to pin them at 25% of their initial price (start even lower) and will let you walk away but they will all settle for a third of the original offer. Their lowest possible final price is probably somewhere in between. I found this to be the case with 4 different vendors I bought from and walked away from 2.
Btw, if you want calligraphy items. I lost count of the amount of shops that offered brushes, inks, and paper. Plenty of other items in the shops too.

A very nice small old street with 2 types of small shops . Antique shops and artist tools , mainly special hand made painting brushes of all sizes and types . Very unique. Also paintings galleries. Very interesting . Bargaining common practice here.

From north of HePingMen, you will pass by the entrance or exit to LiuLiChang (east at the left side & west at the right) street. You can visit the west side of LiuLiChang street, the old calligraphy street of Beijing, and Hutongs, then you will reach the DaiShiLan west street, with plenty of restaurant and souvenirs shops (one of the cheapest souvenirs place in Beijing). One of our favorite restaurant in Beijing is De Yuan Roast Duck restuarant. The roast duck is bit oily to our taste, but it was really good, and what amazed us was the other dishes. Just ask the waiter/waitress for recommendation. The restaurant is located in the center of four subway stations (QianMen, HePingMen, HuFanQiao & ZhuShiKou station). Affordable price with great Chinese food. Throughout our trip in Beijing, the waitress here was the only waitress that served you with a smile, not sure what is happening to all youngster in Beijing, bit rude and not so polite.

Liulichang Street is heaven for browsers of antiques and Chinese collectables.There are more original pieces to be found than people might think. It's also the location of a small studio for one of the best inside snuff bottle painters in the world. Painter Xu Bu has a small area at the front of one of the shops and also sells works by his father Xu PengQi. Both are among the world's best and knock the usual tourist stuff into the background. Xu Bu's works are now in the private collections of people such as HM Queen Elizabeth II, Presidents Clinton and Obama and many others.

Liulichang Street has been around for 300 hundred years or more in Beijing,used to be for literati and the rich and noble class. But now visitors and local people can still go there and search for old scripts, writings and calligraphy. I would not recommend people to buy äntiques" there, unless you really can tell authentic from fake ones!
