About
This ice festival takes place a two-hour car ride northwest of Beijing and is smaller than the more-famous Harbin Ice Festival. Hundreds of ice sculptures from local and foreign artists are on display from mid-January until the end of February every year. These illuminated sculptures reflect an annual theme, and the festival is set against the backdrop of a frozen waterfall. Festival goers can also watch fireworks and folk performances on the central stage, or enjoy slides and ice skating. The area is closed off during most of the season, so the ice festival is the only time to take in the winter views of the Longqing Gorge.

Ice and snow sculptures we usually all have seen somewhere, bur very seldom to this extent. So many sculptures and buildings, nicely illuminated by lights.
I know Harbin in Heilongjiang province is the most famous, but this festival is very close to Beijing. The trip takes half a day only. We did it February 2011, by car.
Friends of me visited us during Chinese new year in Beijing. We included the trip in their visit.
We left BJ at 15:00. We arranged for dinner in a nice restaurant in Yenchin, on the way to Longqing. We spend 2,5 hour at the festival. we arrived in BJ at 22:00.

I went to Yanqing a northern area of the city of Beijing to view the Longqingxia ice lantern Festival. I took the 919 bus from DeShengMen station in Beijing which takes about an two hour and passes a few locations of the Great Wall making for some wonderful scenery. The bus is express service and the bus stop only one place after starts from DeShengMen , beijing station. Bus is cheep option to visit YanQing from Beijing and bus ticket cost is only 16 RMP ( $ 1.6).
After disembarking I was approached by some Chinese gentlemen offering to give us a ride. We settled on 40 RMB as we have 4 person and then ventured off toward Longqingxia which we could soon see in the distance. It was about a 14 km ride.
We reached to destination around 3PM which is bit early as no lanterns is illuminated but still view is very awesome, This festival is organised on frozen river. There were however a multitude of ice sculptures housed under cover that were quite enjoyable.
The entry ticket cost is 100 RMB for adults and 50 RMB for children below 12.I spent at least three hour enjoying numerous ice sculptures and opening ceremony. Once the lanterns and led was illuminated the experience is totally different and awesome.
We will return back around 6:30PM as last bus from Yangqing to DeShengMen station is 7:00 PM . we like to stay more time but we have to leave because of bus timing.

I had the chance to visit the Longqing Gorge Ice and Snow Festival on 16 Jan 2018 . Although all other attractions were presumbly closed as the Dragon Escalator was not operating; the small Ice and snow festival was enough to tease me in a big way. First, there is no need to be attired with thick winter clothings as all exhibiting structures were under shelter and the temperature at the venue was rather comfortably cooling. The ice sculptures was not as tall as those in Harbin or Sapporo, rendering it to be ideally fitting as a complete background for a full length portrait of a person. The sculptors have creatively introduced cute toy characters to add merriment and rekindles childlike-delight of its visitors. And unlike the open-air version, one can be amazes by the colored illuminations even if one were to visit it during day hours. There is also a raised walkway where one can have a bird-eye view looking from a higher location over the top of all structures. While there, take time to enjoy walking on snowy field amongst attractive and colorful icy structures leading the way to the tent housing the Ice and Snow festival. I believe from evening onwards there could be an open-air fair of rides , games and stage performances. The venue is conveniently reachable by frequent public bus transport and the return trip is similarly easy for one to make it a day-return trip from Beijing. In short, it is a happy place for everybody ; be they children , youth , adult and grannies. I spent less than 50RMB each day excluding costing for entrance ticket payment

We arrived there at about 4.30pm, lights were turned on at just after 5pm. The ice sculptures were lovely, so much detail and effort taken in to making them. Cost 100rmb entry, which was totally worth it.
The weather was very cold so take lots to keep you warm! there are places to eat and drink on site, sausages cost 5rmb, which added warmth to our stomachs.
Worth a visit.

I've been to Harbin Ice Festival just the once (I couldn't help but be amazed by it) but had friends visiting this Winter and wanted to show them an Ice Festival knowing one is located at Longqing Gorge so took a trip here.
We went in Chinese New Year, terrible idea! Journey there was fine, the run to get a seat on the train is a good laugh and once arriving at the train station you can take a bus all the way to the gorge. The ice festival itself is great, random characters are along the way if you walk up to it, 100RMB to get in which is reasonable given the effort that goes into these things and sculptures inside are excellent. Food is not great there, we took our own and obviously it's very cold in January but you get over it. Well worth a trip if you are in Beijing in Winter and have a long holiday.

Consider this a much smaller version of the Harbin ice festival but it is still worth it. We arrived here and was met with a sight of lights all over the mountains. The made up lights that made it appear like the great walls including the towers. The whole place is also well lit and beckons as if you are in Las Vegas and everywhere else is dark.
The ice scuptures are under a tent cover which is good as we went at the latter part of February when it was starting to warm up. It is a good thing or else the scuptures would have melted earlier due to global warming and we would have been frustrated with our plans. This year, the ice festival lasted until the end of february, or so we were told that they plan to end the festival on schedule.

We got there towards to end of the winter season, so the outside sculptures were melting and it was starting to look like this was going to be a bad experience. Then we went down into the protected area and it was amazing. It's like a little Harbin, without the absolutely freezing temperatures. After playing around in the ice castle we went and had a snowball fight. Then, as the sun goes down the whole place, including the mountains all around light up. Very impressed by the end of the day.

Amazing to see such ice sculptures. Must wear warm clothes. Parking would be a job, but worth all the trouble.

I went to Yanqing a northern area of the city of Beijing to view the Longqingxia ice lantern Festival. I took the 919 bus from DeShengMen station in Beijing which takes about an hour and passes a few locations of the Great Wall making for some wonderful scenery. The bus does not stop at the wall but on the northbound voyage the views are quite spectacular and taking the long-distance bus is quite an inexpensive way to travel (around 10 RMB). I took the bus to its terminus point in Yanqing which is easily recognizable by the multiple buses queued up across the street for the return trip.
Immediately after disembarking I was approached by some Chinese gentlemen offering to give me a ride. We settled on 30 RMB after some discussion and then ventured off toward Longqingxia which we could soon see in the distance. It was about a 14 km ride in a predominantly rural environment with the occasional new subdivision cropping up here and there. Once at the grounds the driver let me off and fairly long walk of a kilometre or two lead towards the ice lantern Festival. I arrived on site around 3:30 PM which was a little early to view the lanterns while illuminated unfortunately.
There were however a multitude of ice sculptures housed under cover that were quite enjoyable. The admission price was 100 RMB which was not that unreasonable compared to some other endeavors. It was rather cold so dressing warmly was a good idea. Although, there were various restaurants and concessions where you could take shelter from the cold before the long walk back out. There was also a small tubing area for children and a carnival type swing ride for those who love the cold. I spent at least an hour enjoying numerous ice sculptures, including those in tribute to the coming 2022 Winter games which was quite appropriate with some of the mountain events being hosted nearby.
The sculptures were fun and fairly elaborate by most standards but hardly compare to the quite spectacular ones in the Harbin winter festival. The lanterns looked okay without lights but because the last bus departs Yanqing at 7 PM I was a little rushed to disembark. As I left the people started to approach en masse with numerous buses and private vehicles arriving quite frequently. From that standpoint I consider myself quite lucky because I had plenty of room to take photographs and enjoy the sights without being elbow to elbow. If you did want to see the whole show I would recommend a bus tour, private car or potentially even staying locally for one night.

Open every day until 10 but no need to wait for the night because the ice sculptures are in an icy cave.

is the longqing snow festival opens now ( year 2018 ) for visit . What are the current public transport going there?

Thanks its helpful. In fact I just went and return. The ice festival is ready and open to visitor. The others are not as the dragon escalator is not operating; so I cannot go further. As for the transport, I went by bus 919 ; and get down at a stop called " Yanqing Dong Quan" and went to the venue at 40 Yuan with a private car. I discover on return trip , visitor can walk out to the main road and take a bus "Y43 " until its terminal ( where everybody in the bus must get alight ) at a stop called " Guisuibeijienan" where the bus 919 ( returning to beijing ) will also stop to bring us back to Beijing. I noted that the two stops " Dong Quan" and "Guisuibeijingnan" are stops following each other in the 919 routing. Hence I would recommend public transportation to be " take 919 from beijing and alight at Yanqing " Guisuibeijingnan" , then take Y43 and alight at Longqingxia bus stop. Return trip is just to reverse the routing. Note last bus timing are 1930 ( Y43) and 1830 ( 919) as displayed at the bus stop.

In 2016 the longqing Gorge was open until March 8th. Any idea of dates it's open until this year at all please? Thank you!
