When our tour guide asked for a 5:30am start we trusted in his experience and set out in bleary-eyed anticipation. It was well worth the effort since we not only beat the crowds that would undoubtedly come later, but we also caught the animals at their most active and animated. I had not been overly excited by the prospect of looking at pandas asleep in their enclosures but the lively antics we saw on that morning visit far exceeded expectations.

We visited this zoo while touring china March/April 2009. We were very skeptical about the Chongqing Zoo after what we had read. However, the Chongqing Zoo is great. The animals are all healthy and their areas are really nice and clean. Especially the pandas.
The pandas have the best enclosure, complete with a slide, and were happy to munch away on their bamboo and enjoy watching us tourists, watching them.
We cannot say the same about the Siberian Tigers, they did not seem happy and in our opinion as we are not experts, the area they had to roam about in was inadequate, which was sad.
We recomment this attraction, plenty for everyone to enjoy.

I had an opportunity to spend several hours at the zoo as part of a 15-day Nexus Holidays tour of China. I grew up in Washington, D.C., and remember when the National Zoo was gifted with two giant pandas following President Nixon's visit to China in 1972. Along with many thousands of others, I waited hours for a glimpse of Ling-Ling and Hsing-Hsing. At the Chongqing Zoo, the staff do a good job keeping both adult and juvenile pandas visible at all times. They seemed to have some sort of rotation that made it easy to observe the unique animals and get the ubiquitous photos, while ensuring that they also had time for privacy and rest. Near the panda enclosure was a well-stocked little gift shop with all manner of panda themed merchandise. I might have spent $100 USD on souvenirs, but they did not accept credit cards. Something future visitors may want to keep in mind. Aside from the giant pandas, the zoo also has many other beautiful animals. Somewhat sadly, though, they don't seem to get the same treatment as the "stars." Many of the enclosures appeared to be a bit cramped, and somewhat poorly maintained. I didn't notice any staff interacting with these animals (tigers, giraffes, elephants, etc.), and they didn't appear to have any "toys" for stimulation or exercise. I felt particularly bad for a lone bear, who looked a bit worn, and was begging for food. Since Chongqing is the largest municipality in China, it seems a shame that the zoo has not seen more investment, which would help to create a more pleasant experience for visitors and the animals. Hopefully as tourism continues to grow this will improve.

As we arrived at Chongqing Zoo I was very excited because I could not wait to see the Pandas. But what we saw was very dissapointing and quite disturbing. The Red Panda was paceing round and round in a circle, we then moved onto the Giant Panda again only to be very dissapointed, all the Pandas were seperated there was no water in the mout or in the drinking bowls and it was a very hot day, again they were walking round and round in circles, overgrown grass in the play area it looked very rundown considering these animals are a major tourist attraction they did not look well looked after they looked very neclected. The zoo keeper saw us all looking so he decided to throw in a bamboo shoot the panda did react yto this. Overall not a good sight we all came away in a sad frame of mind

The zoo in general is OK. The only thing that stands out in comparison with other Zoos is indeed the Pandas. Having said that, one thing really annoyed me and my wife, which motivated me to write this review. For god sake, if one cannot educate people to behave properly, the management of the Zoo should AT LEAST put enough staff to monitor the public. During all time we were there, feeding the animals with snacks, shouting at the animals and tapping on the glasses seemed to be standard procedure by the public. In one example, at the monkeys cage, despite the glass separating the monkeys from the public, a man managed to trow a bag of cheetos on the top of the cage, which was fenced... of course the monkeys managed to get the bag and started feeding on the Cheetos. But the highlight was when one monkey made a hole on the bag, put his head on the hole and dressed the bag as a shirt... the public went crazy with laugher and applauses. In the bear cage, a women was very engaged in feeding the bear with cheetos... but not very successfully, since she was trowing snacks faster than the bear could take it.. at one point the bear gave up and walked away, with the fur on his back all covered with cheetos!! I'm sorry to say, but most of the time I felt like I was the one inside the cage.

The animals except pandas & lesser pandas was kept in horrible conditions. Dead reptiles in their terrariums etc. Basically no stimulation for the animals and the audience behaving .. Well, not behaving at all. Feeding the animals with snacks and tapping & screaming for the animals to get some sort of vibrations to the.
The most saddest sight were the big cats in small shop windows and the bear begging for food from visitors.. Think twice before going this place.

Nice to see the Pandas but this zoo does not deserve to be on anyone's agenda. The animals are kept in deplorable conditions, some show great neglect, some in dark cages and the facilities are disgusting as well. This facility needs upgrading or close it down.

We visited the zoo on our way to the Yangtze River cruise because we'd been given an Encounter with a Panda. We cuddled Lan Xiang, a twelve year old female. She was very cooperative and posed for photos. I believe anyone can book a similar experience by exchanging some cash...

First of all, I enjoy and support Zoos and the work they do. Chongqing is a very old zoo that has evolved and provides a wonderful opportunity for people to experience wildlife in a beautiful and comfortable setting. Is it perfect -no! But what it does do it does well.
Two months earlier I visited the San Diego Zoo with my grandchildren and although it is in many ways a more developed it is way more expensive for a similar experience. At San Diego adult tickets are $54 and at Chongqing 30 RMB. Needless to say the cost of taking my family to one zoo was way more expensive than the other.
The Panda exhibit is particularly wonderful and the day I was there there were 7 pandas on display. The Pandas alone are worth the price of admission but the zoo contains so much more so take the time to enjoy it!
The zoo is a beautiful setting where families wandered and enjoyed the sights provided by the zoo and the park like setting of the zoo itself.
This is a must see attraction.

We visited the Zoo while on a short stop before boarding our Yangtze River Cruise ship. To see Pandas was one of the reasons we chose to visit China for our holidays. I got it wrong, I was happy we got to see them in their fine enclosures but I believe there are better places to go and see them. It was sad to see some of the other animals in their tiny enclosures. We didn't stay long.

Do you recall whether there was artwork offered at that gift shop (e.g., oil paintings) as well as panda dolls etc? I'm trying to recall whether there was an
art gallery at the zoo, and what the point of contact (email address, we site in english) for that gallery might be. Thank You!

We visited the zoo in the last october 2014. Our Viking guide told us the only way to handle Pandas was to go thru the ministry of culture and then you have to be a government sponsored zoo keeper. The Panda is a very anxiety ridden animal like the koala from Australia. They can go into a fright state and expire if they sense an unknown. I know it is a bit overstated, but it happens.
