Our tour had time for the Flying tigers museum across the street and it was well worth the visit. Located atop a winding one way Chongqing road overlooking the water, this museum, consisting of two main rooms and what is now showrooms for an art school ( with local artisans) was a gem. the history of Major Cehnault and General Stillwell is told in the guide's narrative and photos and exhibits. the orogin of the Flying Tigers in 1937 as a volunteer unit reaponsible for the air defense of what was then known as Chungking was fascinating and brought attendees to tears. the exhibit regarding the emblem that the pilots wore explaining to the Chinese people that they were to be aided if shot down , and the accompanying narratives of rescues gave us goosebumps. Although small, this museum packs a punch in delivering its message of gratitude for the extraordinary aervice by these extraordinary men. while driving along the riverside roadway, look for the former bomb shelters cut into the side of the hill, now being used as storage or even mini-stores.

Did you know that the US helped China to defeat the Japanese before WWII? The US helped to build the Burma Road to bring supplies to the Chinese and shared their airplane technology to update the Chinese Air Force. This museum is dedicated to the American and Chinese soldiers who fought side by side. Their pictures line the walls. An amazing place, so interesting how quickly alliance can change!

This is as expected. You get a glimpse of life for General Stilwell and the rest is up to your imagination. Understandably, there are not a lot of artifacts remaining but a wonderful experience. The military museum across the street is not much, but I did learn that Gen Chennault's wife is living in Washington DC, and I found that interesting.

This is a small museum recounting the story of American assistance during the darkest days of China’s war with the Japanese 1937 – 1945. It’s a little superficial, but I think the problem is that they just don’t have enough objects or photos to hang a more detailed story on. Nonetheless, it does a pretty good job in describing the outlines of the story – how the cooperation began and the incredible difficulties they had to overcome to send war materiel by air over enormous mountains to the landlocked Chinese.

It comes across as a balanced account, though (unsurprisingly) the Japanese side of the story was missing.

I spent about 40 minutes there. Entry was 10 yuan, and it closes at 5pm. I was the only visitor while I was there.

To get there, take the Chongqing metro line 2 to Fotuguan station. Exiting the station, walk about 200 metres slightly downhill.

I find it a bit strange that the most recent review of this place on tripadvisor was from 2014. Another strange thing is that some of the photos from other reviewers appear to show a different building, different interiors. One guidebook also refers to "Stilwell Residence" and "Flying Tigers Museum" as if they are different, separate places. Maybe that is so and that there are two different places. Or maybe there were two different places, now merged into one. But in case there is any confusion, the one that I visited was named "Flying Tigers Museum" at its front entrance, and my review refers to that one (if there are indeed two different places).

US or other Allied visitors of mature age would have an interest in the former residence of US General Stilwell, based here for later years of WWII. A modest entry fee gives access to a good view over river and Chongqing city and self-guided tour of of the sparsely "decorated" house, with plenty of photos and written explanatory panels on the walls. Allow an hour for the visit. If the step over the entry "threshold" is too high for older visitors, ask the attendant to open the gates for easy entry. Parking is limited, but best way to see this (and Chongqing) is with a driver and guide who can drop you at the door. If time permits the "Flying Tigers" museum (opposite the Stilwell Museum) is worth 30 minute visit as well.

Visited the home of a storied World War II officer, General Joseph W. Stilwell. The artifacts from the war are numerous throughout the house. Examples such as his helmet, hat and captured Japanese sword. The furnishings, original, are austere. There are numerous photographs from the war era. There is his conference room with a large map. In the courtyard there’s a wonderful bust of General Stilwell. Across the rode from his house is the Flying Tiger Museum which I did not visit. There was no entrance fee.

The museum is not really much as far as buildings go but when you realize how important this little location was to the effort to stop the Japanese atrocities at this time it is a must "experience". Chongqing was the capitol of China at this time and to understand that this was the Allied Headquarters, still fully intact brings a sense of respect for what Chongqing and the small Allied forces had to endure in China. Easy to get to from Subway line 2 or a quick taxi ride. After this just across the street is the Flying Tiger Museum. Again, not much but lots of information about this dismal time in the history of China and how the Americans and others truly helped against the Japanese aggression.
It is a must see location for history buffs. After this go and enjoy CQ Hot Pot!

This museum documents an important period of China’s history with Chongqing as the wartime capital and headquarters of the Nationalists. General Stilwell played a pivitol role on behalf of the USA government keeping both the Nationalists and Communists supplied to fight the Japanese. Chongqing was bombed on 218 days resulting in heavy losses and damage to the city. Chongqing was supplied during this period by a massive airlift from India over the mountains known as the hump. In turn defended by volunteer USA fighter pilots imbedded in the Chinese airforce.
Good to be reminded of a time when USA and China worked and sacrificed together for the greater good, something which the Chongqing locals have not forgotten.

Go if you are a history buff or like me read Stilwell's biography. Everything has been clean and re-furbished. However, there is no mention if all the furniture is original or not. The historical photo's are fantastic though and so are the photos of visiting dignitaries over the years. There are a few old jeeps in a garage that came from someones collection in California.

This museum is sponsored by the local government.

There is a western toilet but bring your own tissue.

Right across the street is the privately funded Flying Tigers museum for only 10 RMB. Interesting collection of donated pieces from an LA Chinese-American and more photos.
