A wonderful restoration of the site of significant events in China's history as they made their transition to communism. Of course, all of the descriptions must be taken with a pinch of salt as they are of course from a communist perspective and the propaganda is strong. These sites are exceptionally popular and can be very busy even during the... More

Quite fascinating and very sad. This prison held members of the Communist Party who were then tortured and murdered at location before and after the rise to power of Communism in China. Can see the torture chambers and dungeon-like cells the prisoners were kept in.

The Gele Hill area is an area of former prison camps and monuments to the people killed there. Visiting all the historic sites involves walking a few km however it's not strenuous. There is also a tour bus service but I didn't use that. There is also a forest park with lots of opportunities for hiking. The two prisons are... More

GeleShan is a good climb, but as with most places in China, the track is a series of steps. The steps are not uniform in height which makes climbing them uncomfortable sometimes. The steps are actually numbered, which helps you keep track. I prefer hiking tracks like in the West. If you keep climbing past the "plateau", you will encounter... More

This place is a little difficult to locate on your own, a taxi from my hotel at Doubletree, Hilton in Jiangbei cost me about 50RMB (approx. $10 USD). The museum is located a little ways up a mountain, where at the base lies the University of Chongqing. Back in its day, this what looks like a posh villa from the... More

It's actually in quite a pretty place considering it was a POW prison. But getting in and out is totally disorganized (even by Chinese standards). And the fully appreciate the historical side of it you'd need a tour guide and be able to understand them.
