We visited before lunch in a Saturday - it was already busy. This ancient town ha the usual range of shops all selling the same things with some interesting Chongqing snacks and porcelain. It is definitely worth a visit while you’re in Chongqing.

The restoration of this ancient town is very good, and left me with that ancient town feeling. As in the past, it continues to be famous for the production of porcelain pieces.

“Old Chongqing” is a great place for seeing what a typical busy ancient town looked like, albeit, many of the shops are relatively new but were built to look like ancient architecture, souvenir shopping, and trying some flavourful Chinese street food.

A short (25RMB) taxi ride from Chongqing Hilton takes you to Ci Qi Kou. We were there on a Saturday morning and it was thronged with Chinese visitors, but thankfully no tour groups. The area is pedestrian only. The main street is clearly reconstructed and lined with touristy souvenir shops, restaurants and sweet shops. If you explore the alleyways to the right and left the buildings are clearly older and more authentic. This road leads you to the main street, once again lined with shops and food stalls, but with more room to spread out does not seem quite as crowded. Turn to the right, go forward about 200 metres and then turn left and you should find yourself at the steps leading up to an amazing temple. The 5RMB admission also gets you some sticks of incense. There seem many steps to climb to the top, but it is worth it for the views over the rooftops and down to the river. We gained a real sense of peace and tranquillity before plunging back into the crowds. I guess this is as close as you can get to old Chongqing. Our visit lasted three hours or so and we enjoyed every minute, I hope you do too.

I've lived in Chongqing for almost a year, really close to this place, so I was lucky to be able to go there at least once a week and it still wasn't enough! The place is trully magical!!! I recommend going there on a weekday, during the day, while people are at work, 'cuz it gets PACKED. Here's what you schould check out there besides countless souveniers:
1) at 3 pm on Monday and some other (swing by and make sure) there's a FREE SICHUAN OPERA performance at the Ciqikou tea place. and it's a must see! First of, it's short which is good, cuz it doesn't get boring and also there's several different things that the performers do: face changing dance, tea kong fu, tricks, bits and much else. Here's how to find it: when you enter the street from the main entrence, keep going straight and then a little to the left. There will be a passage with a huge teapot at the end of it. To watch the show they'll just ask you to buy a cup of tea, which is so totally worth it(!), then you can sit down under a huge branching tree and enjoy. If there's no show the day you came - check out the exhibition of a local artist.
2) you can also try coming in the evening. There's one BAR that is hats down the best bar I've ever been to. And if you're thinking I don't normally like bars, or i'm not in that kind of mood - trust me, this bar is one of a kind, I cant't stand bars myself, but i LOVE this one. There's a quiet cozy atmosphere, AMAZING live music, a fooceball table, cats you can pet, the friendly staff, bunch of books ...i can't go on and on, but you have to see for yourself. The name is in Chinese, so it won't really help you, but here're the derections: when you walk down the street facing the river, on your left there will be several big trash cans and a turn to the left. Take that turn, there will also be a dragon a red rag dragon above the street. Follow it. On your right will be a very Chinese little cafe, very nicely decorated (their potatoes are a bomb!), on your left will be a cozy Korean cafe with kick-butt BBQ. If you keep going straight (and probably follow the sounds of music) you'll soon see steps and a wall covered with tied red pieces of paper or cloth - take the right you're (i'm so jelous!)
3) Other that that try cotton candy, ask one of the painters to write you foreign name in Chinese characters, try the cookies they give out as samples, just walk around, the place is magical!
Little heads up: if you're leaving Ciqikou late at night when it's dark out - dont' look down. Just don't (rats and roaches everywhere)

If you are tired of skyscrapers and high buildings, you should definitely go to Ciqikou lu! They say it is the old town but actually they rebuilt this area where the old town was. If you are looking for souvenirs or typical products, you must go here! You will see a lot of small shops, where they sell pepper, soap, tea and so on, but watch out fake items!!

Much more authentic feel than other old town streets that we’ve been to in China. Touristy but at least they seem to sell less plastic trinkets and fake goods marketed to foreigners. Mostly foods and souvenirs for Chinese tourists. Nice artwork, nougats and if you can find her, a lady that does insanely delicious fried potatoes. They look like hash browns that she stir fries fresh with some spices.

I've traveled to quite a few cities in China (over a 15), and have seen many of the key tourist sites in each. Ci Qi Kou is similar to what I've seen in most, though I'd say better than average in that you can see the making of Sichuan hot sauce and some other foods that you won't find in other cities. Like most of the created tourist sites (e.g., the famous Bhudda temple in Nanjing), it's site is ancient but the buildings are not. And the tourist site is 99% just an outdoor shopping mall, where the stores are repeated every 50 meters. That is, there is pretty much no uniqueness to the stores and snack places.
One plus is that the architecture of some the buildings, while not in the slightest ancient, is reflective of what many in China's cities grew up in during the 70s. A mainland friend told me the somewhat shabby home he grew up in looked just like some of the homes here. If you take some of the small alleys off the main pedestrian walk you will see some buildings that have been condemned, so I presume some of these are a few decades old.
So if you've nothing better to do, or haven't yet been to one of these created tourist sites with lots of stores, then come here. You will find it fun and interesting. Otherwise it's a pretty long metro ride from the city centre to see an artificial tourist site.

This is one of our itinerary before joining our Yangtze River cruise, it was very busy full of tourists but we managed to avoid the crowded shops by going to the pagoda. It was worth it as we were the only ones there, it was a very steep climb to the top but so worth it as we were rewarded with lovely views.

They place is very touristy and packed with people all day long. We went at night and the view is great. There are many stores to browse and diff foods to choose from. One of the best thing that's happened was after we were done and ready to go home, we could not find a taxi. They were all full at 10pm. So we decided to walk but were very tired. We asked some random girl on the street and she said it's too far to walk and I asked if she can call a DiDi car (like uber: private taxi service) for us and she said yes. She was so helpful in helping us get the car, making sure the driver doesn't send us somewhere wrong. When we got in the car and i wanted to give her the money she refused and threw it back in the car and said bye bye. I have never experienced his before. Usually the Chinese want to rip off he tourists. She did. It know us, she offered to help and didn't want any compensation! When the we were having too much fun talking to the driver and he missed it hotel, this girl even called the driver to make sure he is not driving us somewhere else. I was completely floored by how genuinely nice she was and this was happening in China. The only other place I have ever experienced this kind of hospitality is in Spain.
Anyhow, I asked the driver for her number, contacted her to thank her and wanted to treat her it for dinner but she refused and said it was no big deal. Info us out she is a tour guide, works for a travel agency so I decided to book a tour with her so she can make some commission. She never asked for any compensation and is genuinely a nice and very fun person to be with. She speaks some English and is going to open her own travel agency next year. I told her I would post my experience on tripadvisor so more people around the world can contact her should anyone need help or want a private tour while in Chongqing.
If you want to know where to eat or tour, she is the person to contact. Her name is Dan Dan Zhang. Here is her phone number. 1808300-0211.

The airport is in the north, and Ciqikou is in the middle of the city, right on the Jialing River. We did not go directly there so I don't know exactly how far it is, but it will probably take about 2 hours by car because of the traffic. Parking all over Chongqing is a challenge, so use public transportation if possible. We were staying with a Chinese family, so they drove us around. Even then they had trouble finding parking much of the time.
